    Over Priced

    Just askin'...

Would anyone here pay $200.00 for the 12" of "Brother's Theme" by The Brothers? That's the price I saw and I really don't understand why, rare or not. I mean, I love the song but there are limits!

Well Nicky, in a word or two, **** no  There are songs I like that I don't have. Occasionally I would come across them at high prices and my initial impulse is to grab it. My more rationale side always tempers this and I end up waiting. Most of the time I find it later at a lower price.
    Find them and destroy them!

Is it different from the LP mix? If no, then an already absurd price becomes truly laughable.

Then again, those Mexican 12s of Barrabas' "Woman" go for insane amounts of cash... and it's just the regular 3-minute version, isn't it?

I think I saw this too on "Records by Mail"s list. Isn't it the flip "Under the skin" that this is sort after for? Still very expensive! :x

Possibly even more ridiculous - there's an auction on eBay at the moment for a 12 inch single of Night fever b/w Staying Alive by the Bee Gees: for $102.50 and rising! :o

Yes. I had put it on my 'Want List', not realizing when it came in they'd be asking for my first and last born :x . "Under The Skin" doesn't interest me though I know it got played. I wanted it for 'the theme'.

Graham: Don't know if it's the same as the lp, which I already have. Even if it isn't, I wouldn't go there. Not for $200.00.

    That damn Brothers 12!

I saw it on a list for £10 in 1990 and left it, as I thought it was a bit pricey. Didn't see it again 'til 3 years ago, when I was offered it for £50. No way...

Offered it again last year for £150! You can guess my reply...

Interestingly (or not), 'Under The Skin' actually sounds better on the LP - for some reason, the 12" version sounds stifled and bled-dry (similar problem with Metal Weeds' 'Sunshine Love' b-side - another RCA 12" from around the same time). Still, I'd like to have that track over a whole side on its own... :-?

Looking at the prices of the records you's mentioned particularly that $1800, all I can say is CRIKEY :o :o :o !!!!! I mean fair dinkum, to spend $1800 on a rekkerd you'd have to have rocks embedded in your brain blocking intelligence  !!! Now you's know why I download rare grooves off Soulseek    !!!!!

Fair dinkum that's just toooooooooooo bloody much even for a rare collectors item!!! $1800 will get ya a new computer, two DVD recorders, maybe even a widescreen TV!!! Then again, people pay ridiculous prices for rare stamps, same thing!

I'm a cheap arse bastard when it comes to buying records as I tend to buy from Salvos and markets. At the Salvos records go for 50 cents and in amongst a **** load of Kamahl and Barry Crocker records and other old farts music there are some cool disco/funk records that are in top notch condition (some without a scratch even) and they still go for 50 cents. I mentioned a couple of years back I bought Brass Constructions "I" and "III" albums there, 50 cents each and the rekkerds themselves are unblemished :D !!! Unfortunately nowdays the Wollongong Salvos only sell old farts music like classicals, hyms, marching brass bands, crooners and lots and lots of Kamahl records ARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHHHHH    !!!!!! Nonetheless I come across a lot of goodies at the market for $1 to $5 and at the dump too but in Australian markets and Salvos and dumos there is no escaping Kamahl records AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH  !!!

Anyways in specialised record stores records go from $5 to about maybe $60 tops and that is still too much for me, I normally don't pay more than $10 for a record because as I mentioned I'm a cheap arse bastard !!! The most I've payed for a record is $20 which was for Earth Wind & Fire's 1974 "Open Our Eyes" album at Good Groove Records in Sydney.

Back to the point, few hundred/few thousand dollars for a record I would say **** NO  !!!! That sort of money can cover maintenance on my car and my rent and other bills, plus that sort of money I would be wanting a DVD recorder so I can archive my vintage video collection for preservation!!!

The song is a classic R&B ballad... The guys bidding on this must really like the song to waste their time... You can actually say this is a rare 12" also.

    is it an Aussie thing?

You're not stoopid...just sensible. As you say, there are so many other things you could do with your hard-earned, why spunk it away?

It does seem strange when the Debra Laws 'Very Special' LP is on CD but if they must have that 12" then that's their choice! I thought I was paying a fortune when I bought Wanda Walden's 'I Must Be Dreaming' 12" for £30! I'm so cheap.

As for Ebay or Gemm, ebay isnt what something is worth by book price, its just whatever some of these crazy people will pay. Gemm is wayyyy over priced, so much I almost think its a joke 90% of the time LOL. For instance, theres a copy of Costandinos' "Romeo And Juliet" 12'' with the horrable 13 min edit on it for 450 bucks or so!!! And its used! LOL LOL On ebay or anywhere else for that matter you can get that piece o crap for no more than 6 - 8 bucks.

As for the Bee Gees promo EP, thats a well sought after item and the only place the 12'' versions of the "Night Fever" stuff is avalible! I almost at one point went into the ebay fight for that but I stopped at 50 bucks cause I wasnt gonna pay more than that. Unfortuinatly ebay is the only place I ever see that record. At least I have copys of all 4 12'' versions on a CDR

Kamahl is a Malayan born Australian crooner who sings a little like maybe Tony Bennett, and he appeals to older people who don't like rock and for some reason he has had the Donny Osmond effect on young women back in the 70s too. His real name is Kameswaran Kandiah but somehow got the name Kamahl.

Anyways his music to my opinion is pretty boring even though he made the pop charts and his records can be found in EVERY, and I mean EVERY charity stores, Salvos stores, old granny op shops that sell mostly clothes, markets, garage sales and rubbish tips. It seems that his records only interested people for a certain period of time before being thrown out      !!!!!

Kamahl also has been known to have a catch phrase "Why are people so unkind?" as well. Kamahl often has had the piss taken out of him when appearing on Australia's funny variety show "Hey Hey It's Saturday". People on there have immitated him, he has had flour poured on him whilst the tape was sped up when he sang and there were many Kamahl "boring" jokes being made of him, but he has a good sense of humour.

You can see all of him on his official site http://www.kamahl.com/main.html and all his records at the local Salvos if you come to Australia                        .
