    Dancin' The Night Away

When Voggue's song "Dancin' The Night Away" came out, was it an immediate hit?

I was listening to it in the car today and while I like the song a lot, it is different than the typical Disco/Hi-NRG stuff that was out at the time.

Are there any songs that mix especially well with it besides "Love Buzz" :D

It was an immediate hit for me and my colleagues.
At the time it was released I was working a club that had awful, fixed speed decks and the DJ booth was set into a lift device that was supposed to mimic a space ship and had to be used on a regular basis (at least twice an hour and each journey from top to bottoem or vice versa took about 5 minutes)......so mixing was more or less out of the question. We just used to slam it in with anything of a similar tempo (there just wasn't anything much with the same rhythm pattern- this we've discussed before).

As far as I remember, I used to sequence it with Janis Ian - Fly Too High or Change - Searchin' and maybe a few more that I can't remember.

I seem to recall it coming out very early in 1981. It gave a lot of imports a run for their money (I heard it more on Tony Princes's disco show than anywhere else) and eventually got licensed to Mercury in the UK. It then got a bit of daytime commercial play and may have even made the lower top 40. Very, very commercial and saccharine, but I really liked it and still do - it's quite atmospheric.

I finally got one a few years ago - didn't bother at the time (too many others to buy) but the Canadian Celsius 12" is always obtainable in London, because it sold so well here in its first few months. Great label design, too.

I had this early on the import before the domestic, and at first it was difficult to work it in without loosing some dancers, but as it became better known and popular it was a floor filler, at this particular club I worked ('81-'82) it was a big hit. I have here play list notes from one particular night where I mixed out of '96 tears' into 'Dancing..' and out with 'when I'm with you' but also remember using 'Gonna get along with out you" (original version) "my simple heart" and others, locally this song was popular for a while, I’d say almost 2 years, so it was probably mixed with lots of stuff I don't recall.

Yeah, ‘Searching’ was good too, it was very popular in this club at the same time..

I remember the song being an inmediate hit in my country. In fact, there was even a local edition of the LP! :) The second got one too.
However, I found that first LP sometime ago and on hearing it, it's clear "Dance the night away" was the only thing they had to offer. Of course, the first song on the other side is a poor copy of "Dance..." :-? But that hit had an unmistakable sound. It was one of those songs that you think were always there, when you are hearing them for the first time.

Crowd loved it from the very beginning. The second they heard those 'bells' they were into it. This seemed to be one of those records you tried to isolate as it had a really identifiable beginning that the crowd loved and a cold end which meant you had options. It did mix well with "Searchin" and another JFP (Peter Jacques Band)track, "Is It It?" Sounds just like "Searchin".

This is a really familiar discussion... :-?

A track I feel has a similar feel is Michael Lovesmith's 'Baby I Will' from '83. Wasn't Voggue produced by the same people who were behind Katmandu, Lime & Carol Jiani?

Over here it was an instant smash hit and also the follow-up "Love buzz" did quite well. But all the things touched by Denis Lepage worked over here. Lime with their hits and records like "Agent 406" and "I'll be yours", Kat Mandu's "The Break" was massive and "Hot wax" was one of the most wanted bootlegs since the record-company didn't want it in the shops at first because they didn't believe in it.But it became famous in clubs and was used by famous discostation S.I.S as stationcall. And for many years the Dutch Rams Horn-mixes with much material from Lepage sold very good.
