When LP is better than 12"

Just thinking of Amant produced by Ray Martinez and mixed by Jim Burgess on TK/Marlin label (1978):

    12"

    "If There's Love" (11:18 )
    "Hazy Shades Of Love" (8:50)

    LP

    "If There's Love" (14:33)
    "Hazy Shades Of Love" (13:29)

The 12'' edit of "Hazy Shades Of Love" I think is better than the LP as on the LP its too long and boaring honestly. As for "If Theres Love". The LP is best all around.

Another where I think the LP version is better is "Touch Me Baby" by Ultimate. The common 12'' version of that that was issued on the Casablanca box CD doesnt even come close to the great mix on the LP. However, the rare 12'' mix of that I think is better than the LP.

One last to briefly mention as theres been discussions about this one before is Alec R Costandinos "Romeo And Juliet". That 12'' is the worst edited thing in creation I think LOL.

I've always been a LP man myself - I Never DJ'ed so I never really had any real need for having all the stuff on 12".
Still, I do have lots of 12"s and I'll agree that many times the LP versions are supirior to the 12" versions. Often they just seem more complete (if ya get my drift). Also, discovering that a 12" version is the same, or even shorter, than the LP version really bugs me - it has happened quite a few times.
Can't really remember any right now though!

Alot of times the disco 12''rs were shorter to keep people moving on a dancefloor so things wouldnt get boaring (Amant's Hazy Shades Of Love is a good example of the reasoning for 12'' edits). Usualy if a track was over the 10 min mark theyd either make a shorter 8 to 9 min remix or just edit the thing down to between 5 - 10 mins depending.

What mix is this? The promo 12" has two different mixes, both of which are lame. Is there another?

Incidently I picked up that Amant 12" record recently from the "Record King" store in Wollongong, great stuff. Must say I'm surprised the LP version is longer, normally it's expected to be the 12" version being longer. If I ever see the LP I'm-a-buyin' :D !!!

The LP version of "If Theres Love" is worth getting the LP for. Its pretty much just a 12'' with pic sleave. Same A and B side lol. "Hazy Shades Of Love" though on the LP may make you zzzzz though lol

I recently nearly bought a 12" of Love & Kisses 'I Found Love / Accidental Lover' thinking it was the LP as the packaging was identical; I couldn't believe it when I saw that both tracks were only about 3 minutes in length! It might as well been a 7" single; there was alot of unused black vinyl!! :-?

I have that hideous 12" release as well and it is the worst edit job I've ever heard. When it comes to Costandinos, Midney, Martinez or any of those kinds of work (concept albums...), the full album version are usually the best way to go.

Don't listen to him funky dude. :) I touched "If There's Love" about once and was forever stuck on "Hazy Shades...". And the lp version is the one to have of both cuts.

Never knew there was a horrable 12'' of that! As far as I knew the only 12'' was the promo only release with the not too bad 5 min version of "I Found Love". I have the US 45 for "I Found Love" with "Accidental Lover" on the B side and..the A side single version is a little over 3 mins but not bad at all...if ya dont know the song and its the first time you hear it youd think the 3 min version is full honestly on this record. The B side is basicly "Accidental Lover" part one, no edits, just fades out as its going into the 2nd section. Where is this horrable 12'' from? That way ill avoid it if I ever come accross it.

I have the 7" and it must be the same edit. HORRIBLE! It sounds like they just cut the tape in random places. I honestly thought it was skipping the first time I heard it.

Which 7'' is this?? Cause the US one is a good 3 min edit with only 3 cuts and ya dont even know they happen if ya never heard the track.

There are a few times when the 12" was a remix and the better LP version never appeared on 12" - if that's what this topic is about?

Kleeer "Tonight's the Night" The standard 12" is a slightly worse more reverby remix. This was almost remedied when the LP version appeared on the flip of the UK of "Close to You", but annoyingly it was "blended" into "I Love To Dance". This would be a much sort after UK only 12" if these 2 tracks weren't segued.

Keni Burke "You're the Best" I've always liked this slice of electronic disco and much prefer the sound of the tighter mix on the LP version. Again, the 12" is a more reverby, "big" sounding remix. The LP version does annoyingly fade in and out at one point.

MFSB "Mysteries of the World" I know it has been mentioned before but the 12" criminally leaves of the slow mysterious orchestral intro from the LP version.
    Leather is the way forward!

Another example of this is 'Feeling Lucky Lately' by High Fashion from '82; the LP version has a lovely doodling piano intro but this is totally missed off the 12" single version.

Al Hudson's 'Spread Love' is shorter on the US 12", omitting the two-minute instrumental build-up of the full-length LP version. This is typical of LP versions edited for disco play (like 'Mysteries Of The World' and 'I'm Always Dancing To The Music') whereby tricky, perhaps non-mixable intros are simply chopped off. Whilst not always ideal, I find the practice very 'disco' and feel it should be commended, as someone, somewhere was thinking about the prospective DJ and his/her programming.

By the way, the UK 12" of 'Spread Love' has the full, 8 min.+ version in all its glory, at 45 RPM. 8)

Why should DJs be specially considered when they must surely be in the minority of people buying the records. :-?

No that's the writers, musicians & producers who bring the music to the public, the DJ is the middle man IMO. I do get rather annoyed with the importance given to DJs these days; people talk about them as though they are gods when they just play records at the end of the day; no offence intended to any DJs here but that's just my opinion.

Oh, yeah - another pet hate of mine - GQ's 'This Happy Feeling' on US Arista 12" - only 3:49 mins! What where those knuckleheads thinking of?

    Steely,

There was that time when 12"s were 'formatted for club play'. That meant ease of use for djs. Record companies figured since we were the ones pushing the music, they would do what they could to help us out. Sometimes they didn't get it right. I would have preferred a 12" with both the 'club' mix and the 'full length' album mix, espeically when intros were being chopped off.

You know what I mean, Steely. DJs, via radio and clubs, play records people may not get to hear otherwise. The writers, musicians and producers want to get paid and they can't if people can't hear what they have to offer. DJs are important. The god-like status certain DJs are given is beyond me - I think it's totally unnecessary - but maybe some of these guys really change (some) peoples' lives.

Disco music was club music. It relied upon club play. DJs play records in clubs...
