DISCO GOLD - New CD Compilation

Found this on the net today while searching for some Phyllis Hyman. Thought it might be of interest to some.

    RELEASE DATE: 6/22/04
TITLE: DISCO GOLD VOL. 1 (LIQUID 8 )
    LABEL: LIQUID 8

    Track Listing:

    1. Free Man - South Shore Commission
    2. Theme from Wonder Woman - Wonderland Band
    3. Theme from Superman - Wonderland Band
    4. We're On The Right Track - South Shore Commission
    5. Dreamworld - Don Downing
    6. Do It ('Til You're Satisifed) - B.T. Express
    7. Leaving The Good Life Behind - Phyllis Hyman
    8. Bite Your Granny - Morning, Noon & Night

Hey, some we've seen before and some we haven't. I'm intrigued because I don't remember "Bite Your Granny" and the Phyllis Hyman title doesn't ring a bell, either. Best yet, the CD appears to be 'budget' priced. I've seen it from $6.29 - $8.99 so you really can't lose.

I contacted Liquid 8 hoping to get some info on them, the versions of the songs on the CD and if they intend to do a series. Will let you know.

Hi NickNack: This was a pretty big tune on import at the more upfront UK clubs in '77 - classic title!

    Just found this at:
    http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Morning...d%20Night.html

Morning Noon and Night were a six piece group who released one album for the United Artists subsiduary Roadshow Record label in 1977.

The group were introduced to legendary producer Michael Stokes by Sam Taylor in 1977.

The resulting album became popular, initially, for the club anthem 'Bite Your Granny', which proved highly popular in the U.K. nightclubs at the time.

The track 'Time' has become the track that many soul punters go for today

Musicians involved with the project included Eddie Willis, Rodrick 'Peanut' Chandler, Rudy Robinson and George Roundtree.

The group disappeared from the soul scene after this release.

Bite Your Granny was a classic for me. One of my most loved records of all time. 1000 more records like this and I'd be a very happy man.
Even my daughter gave it a cursory thumbs up, when she listened to it after being intrigued by the title.

Is 'Bite Your Granny' the LP or 12" version? Would be nice to have the long version on CD.

I have a Phyllis Hyman single somewhere on a brown indie label - possibly Cherie Records. Perhaps that's the track on this compilation.

The Phyllis Hyman track is real good. Tom Moulton mixed this for Mis H--the long version is on another of her compilations "One On One"...

    from AMG:

    1. Leavin' the Good Life Behind [Long Version] (Darling) - 5:08

This 12-track collection brings together three of her earliest solo sides (the long version of "Leavin' the Good Life Behind" featuring the famous 'Tom Moulton Mix', "Baby [I'm Gonna Love You]" and "Do Me") and nine collaborations with various artist of different musical stripes.

I wish they'd added The Wonderland Band track "Paradise Island"...now that would have been special.

I must admit I was always a bit disappointed by the LP version. It wasn't much longer than the 7" single. The 12" is about 7 minutes and is on Roadshow Classics. This CD is supposedly available for $4.98 from Oldies.com. I really should order a copy.....now. byeeeeeeeee

Well done, Quinny. You're finally pulling your weight! Only kidding...

It was either going to be one Hot Productions or Collectables, wasn't it :-? ...just my luck. I'm gonna pass.

Forrce: I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand just 'cos of the label.
Perhaps Bernie could enlighten us as to the quality of the CD, as it's in the vaults and he has a copy?

Well despite Roadshow Classics not having much in the way of dynamics and some songs having a "scratchy sounding" high end, it isn't bad especially if you find it cheap on the used market. Just wish they'd burned that "Bang A Gong" song by Witch Queen as I hate it immensely. Also Brass Construction's "Movin'" is not the album cut, but a "live" version.

We're talking about 2 different CDs I think. The one in the vault has almost the same tracks, plus more, but is out there by Collectibles. I think we all know how they sound. This supposed new one claims ' Original Recording Remastered' and hasn't been released yet by Liquid 8.

  I'm sorry. I just realized Quinny mentioned the Roadshow Classics CD.

I went looking for Bite Your Granny, just to see if I had it laying around somewhere and forgot about it. No such luck. No lp, no 12, nada! Another example of Black music hitting it over in the UK and not doing much here in the US.

"Bite Your Granny" by Morning , Noon & Night peaked at #32 on the Billboard Disco chart on 7/9/77.

I don't recall it from back in tha day. I recently got it on a compilation from the "Carwash Experience" in London...some kinda mixed cd. It was at the end of the 2nd cd...short version only.

Phyliis Hyman's "Leaving The Good Life Behind" was released as a 12" on Buddah. Didn't chart on the Billboard disco charts. :o

This sounds like the version that was released on the RS International lp: Don Downing, Doctor Boogie. RSIL-100-A. Songs runs about 5:35 and has that dropout at the break. Arranged by Meco Monardo. This was 'the mix' to use. I remember using the CBS version that was straight Tom Moulton with vocal/instrumental/vocal until this mix hit.

that's interesting - the label says 1978, but the sleeve, at least the one in my hand, says 1979.

marky - are you sure about "Leaving the Good Life Behind" being on 12"? - i just googled it and didn't find any listings for a 12". i've never seen that on 12", although i do have the 7" somewhere and i remember the 7" being somewhat longer than average.

My sleeve is plain white paper. Maybe I lost the original. Is your label Roadshow or RSI? Maybe that's the difference. My label reads manufactured and distributed by HOB Records in New York City.

my copy is on Roadshow - it has a photo of DD surrounded by three disco babes pawing him - one of them is sticking her finger in his cheek and he's trying to look cool in his fine orange polyester suit as if none of this is going on.

the back cover says the album is also available on 8-Track and Cassette - woo-hoo!

Well, we have the same photo on the front of the jacket, but mine has the RS International logo in the bottom left hand corner. Probably just like my Wonderland Band 12" of "Thrill Me..." which is on RSI and dated 1978 but the lp is on Roadshow and dated 1979.

that's not unusual for a record to be issued on two different labels - yours is probably the original, even though mine has a promo stamp on the back. btw - when i wrote sleeve i meant lp jacket, not the inner thin paper sleeve. i tend to use those interchangeably.

going back to miss hyman - i'm pretty sure the 7" i have is on Private Stock and i think it had a tom moulton mix in the neighborhood of five minutes - someday i'll put my 7"s in alphabetical order so i can refer to them quickly.

sfbeary, you're right, of course. I mis-remembered my Phyllis info. (Private Stock was the label; I just assumed it was a 12" because of the over five minute length).

Thought I'd share the time signatures on the CD. If you're interested, at least you'll know which version you're getting.

    1. SOUTH SHORE COMMISSION - FREE MAN 5:37 This is the 'original' version, not the 'disco version' that appears on the lp running 7:21.
    2. WONDERLAND BAND - THEME FROM WONDER WOMAN 4:41
    3. WONDERLAND BAND - THEME FROM SUPERMAN 3:32
    4. SOUTH SHORE COMMISSION - WE'RE ON THE RIGHT TRACK 4:48 Full length lp version. I've been playing this cut a lot as I never used their version. Always pulled Ultra High Frequency. Rhythm tracks are identical but the 'SSC' vocals have a stronger touch of R&B. Very nice.
    5. DON DOWNING - DREAMWORLD 5:33 This is the version that DiscoDisk was asking about earlier in the thread. It's the RS International mix from the lp with the 'breakdown'.
    6. B.T. EXPRESS - DO ('TIL YOU'RE SATISFIED) 5:51 Full length lp version
    7. PHYLLIS HYMAN - LEAVING THE GOOD LIFE BEHIND 5:07 Marky & Barry say this is the version to have. :D
    8. MORNING, NOON and NIGHT - BITE YOUR GRANNY 7:20 Our resident 'funksters' say this is the 12" length. This is a fun cut. I had no idea what to expect. A great mix of funk, blues and jazz that just rocks you along. Even when you think you're not listening you're boppin' your head. This is real old school, raw, not slick and polished up. The guys are jammin'! :D

BTW -- Liquid 8 really did remaster the cuts. This is the best I've heard "Free Man" on any compilation as it's always 'cloudy', the hi-hats almost disappearing. Too bad it's not the loooong, long version. :)
