You mentioning the trumpet makes me think of Doc Severinson and his solo on Marlena Shaw's "Touch Me In The Morning".
Hi! I was coming back home tonight and had Gino Soccio's "Try It Out" playing. I heard the trumpet solo and realized that this would be a good topic. Can you think of any remarkable solos in disco songs?
I can't really think of too many but the trumpet one on "Try It Out" is an outstanding one. Virtuosity, if you ask me.
Ricardo

What about that thrilling trumpet in Odyssey's "Native New Yorker"?
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
For me, it's gotta be the part in Lime's "Angel Eyes" that Denyse sings... you know, the bit that goes "Love me, baby.... SHRIEEEEK!!!"
It's incredibly useful. Just put in some high-quality earplugs, and crank the volume on that sucker. Rids your whole neighbourhood of roaches, mice, and surly teenagers on skateboards in no time. Can also be used for stripping paint, welding metal, and frying the tweeters on your speakers.
Um... but seriously, it's gotta by the synth solo in C.J. & Co's "We've Got Our Own Thing".
Have you guys heard the fantastic solo on 1986 SWING OUT SISTER's SURRENDER(12" STUFF GUN MIX)? This 7 minute remix takes the song to higher standards if compared to the mere 3 minute album version.
Near the end of the song and after the vocal parts sung by CORINNE DREWERY, comes a long instrumental break beginning with a quick drum solo. Then keyboard player ANDY CONNELL does a very beautiful long piano solo followed by a trumpet solo. Outstanding!
Despite the dance eletronic beat, the song itself sounds very sad and these solos make it even more melancholic.
Paulo - sounds good to me!
I would go with the extended sax break in Arthur Adams "You Got The Floor". Sends a shiver down my spine every time I hear it ...
If it moves - funk it!!
Well....there are so many remarkable solos in disco....at the moment I pick one:
- Nile Rodger's guitar solo in CHIC's "REAL PEOPLE" song. I dont know if is the best guitar solo in disco, but is outstanding!!

SENHORES DO GROOVE - BRAZIL
John Davis and The Monster Orchestra - Up Jumped The Devil is an example of a nice solo effort.

I can't help but think of the killer percussion solo break in 'Scorpio' by Dennis Coffey's Electric Guitar Band.
Easy,
Sam "ALL JAM"
The first thing I'm picturing is the guitar solo in the middle part of "Dyin' to be dancin'" (Empress). Really good work.
I think "Rhythm of the world" by Gino Soccio also has a wonderful solo going over the song's last minutes.
Could it be that King Errisson's "Manhattan Love Song" has the hottest piano break - a montuno I believe it's called. You first get the full orchestra and the girls, a long percussion sequence with tympani outbursts and jungle noises, and then the piano comes on and you're doing the mambo for the remaining 5 minutes of the magnificent Mike Theodore production and wanting it to be neverending. - Some bewildering solos on more unlikely tracks include Pretty Maid Company's jolly Munich stomper "Pretty Maid" . This breaks into some unglaublichly cool sax playing by someone who really knows what he is doing.
Paulo,
oh I'm so glad every time someone brings up Swing Out Sister... As for "Surrender" (Stuff Gun Mix)-- now that must be the closest thing to heaven the sometimes dreary 80's ever came, right?
And Jussi...
..."Manhattan Love Song's" long piano conclusion is fantastic. Every one of my friends agrees (even my wife does...). In my book, this is the third best disco record to come out in the 70's!
By the way, Jussi, I just found an extra copy of Astrud Gilberto's 12" "The Girl from Ipanema" (w/ Vinny Montana). If you haven't got it, I'll send it to you.
I've just been listening to my MD on the way to work, and I really enjoyed that guitar solo in Slave 1977 tune "You and Me".
Worth a mention, I think.
If it moves - funk it!!
I've always loved the sax solo on "Once Upon A Time" by Donna Summer.
I can only think of one trombone solo which is on "I'm Coming Out"by Diana Ross. Are there any others as I think it is such an unusual instrument to use for a solo.

Just for your info, the trombone solo on "I'm COMING OUT" by Diana Ross was played by Meco (Meco Monardo). On 2002-05-17 08:11, totoman wrote:

If you like trombone solos listen to Fred Wesley records (with JB's, James Brown and solo works), this guy is the "wild" master of the trombone, quite hot, extremely hot I mean!!
Peace,
Blaxman

As previously noted, the solo was by Meco Monardo. An interview where he mentions this and his thoughts on Diana Ross appear in my interview with him at:On 2002-05-17 08:11, totoman wrote:

Hey Jazz Pilgrim, if you name Slave you got to remember that noisy guitar work on "Slide", that's quite remarkable for a funk band.
Hello Kari
Glad you like Swing Out Sister. If you're interested in hearing this mix of Surrender, it was included on the CD version of their 1986 first album IT'S BETTER TO TRAVEL. After the original album they've included 4 long bonus tracks:
BREAKOUT (12" Remix)
TWILIGHT WORLD (12" Superb mix)
SURRENDER (12" Stuff Gun Mix)
COMMUNION (Instrumental Mix)
These remixes as well as the whole album are very very good.
Ah yes, Swing Out Sister have to be one of the best things to come out of the UK! 'Another Lost Weekend' & 'Blue Mood' r such sophisticated tracks.
Why isnt that King Errison track on any compilation CDs like alot of Mike Theodore's other work is?
...ya gotta beat the street......
Hey, Nano, you're absolutely right!! Cheers for the tip!!
Incidentally, "Slide" is on the other side of my "You and Me" UK 12-inch, and will now be included on the next MD that I put together ...

I have one more to add, although it's fairly obscure (and only an album track, AFAIK):
The awesome jazzy electric piano solo in Milton Hamilton's "So Beautiful".
Sorry I'm late with this if anyones still doing this one!
Trombone solos I really like are 'In The Forest' by Baby O & 'Ritzy Mambo' by Salsoul Orchestra.
Maarten, if youre reading this, do u know if the Rose Royce track u mentioned 'Still In Love' is available on CD? This was such a classy & underrated track.
