Connecting Stereo to laptop

Hello I've been trying for 3 days connecting my stereo to my laptop (Toshiba) so I can rip some cassetes and vinyl but I've had no success, I've tried connecting this 2 wires to the L & R input of my stereo and this one with the ending of a headphone/microphone to the microphone and headphone entrances.

I already have the software to rip but I just can't seem to get the audio flowing. Does anyone know what could be happening? Do I need something else?

Hi V,
You need a Phono/mini-jack cable to get any sound flowing.
Plug the phonos into your amplifyer's AUX / TAPE or CD inputs and then connect the mini-jack to the PC soundcard.

That should do the trick.

Well that's the cable I started using last night and it didn't work either...My stereo is a Kenwood and I connect the red and white to the Audio Input, could the fact of it being input and not output be the cause for this problem. Also the CD and cassete don't have an output as far as I'm concerned, the only thing where you can plug this jacks are the L and R audio input. Do you think I need another stereo or something?

Hmm..it seems to me you must be having the same problem as I have every time I decide to try my hands at the art of vinyl ripping. I just can't get it to work, let alone the fact that I keep on falling in those damn cables on the floor :lol:

Checklist
1. Find Audio Output On Stereo (2 RCA contacts, Red/white or on older eq. Red/Black)
If no such output goto end

2. Find Line In on Computer (minijack). (Not Mic input, to sensitive)

3. Enable recording for Line In (or analog mix) in the recording control panel in Windows, Adjust the level so you don't go above 0 db.

4. Start the Cassete or Vinyl record and hit record button in the windows program you use for recording.

5. When Sound stops hit stop recording in windows and save file.

Thanks K-Bee and Noman for your help...I've been working on it all morning and it's useless. I hate my stereo now! :evil: The stereo I don't think has an audio output, the only place where I can connect the red and white jacks is called AUX INPUT.

Do u think the output of my stereo is where I can connect the headphones? If it is then I have to buy a special cable or adapter.

The laptop only has the microphone and headphone entries no other ones. I tried also connecting my stereo to the BIG computer using the same cable and procedure as I used for the laptop, and connected it at the microphone thing in the back and this other hole which was next to the headphone/speaker hole. And it didn't get any sound. I think it's because my stereo has AUX INPUT and not ouput.

I would appreciate any help as I have to restore hundreds of stuff soon before it gets ruined.

Sounds like your stereo lacks an audio output. Most compact or mini-systems are this way.

You could take the output out of your headphones and then adjust the volume to a point before it starts to "clip" and distort, but this is not the best way to do it as the sound is not as good. You want an output that is fixed in volume aka "Line Out."

I suggest you try and get a hold of another stereo (perhaps a friend's unit) with an actual output. Anything that says "Audio Out', "Preamp Out" or "Monitor" should do. Good luck.

You will also need a sound card which has a line-level input. A mic input simply will not do.

Thanks to everyone for helping me on this :) :D FINALLY I could connect the setreo to the pc and I already can rip my stuff. I ended up connecting the headphones to the mic. It sounds fine I must say.
