Disco/Donna Summer week on "American Idol"

I don't know if anybody here is watching American Idol this season (it's not a great competiton this time around, but the ratings indicate that someone is watching), but the theme tonight (May 11) is "Disco," or possibly "Donna Summer" specifically; different sources ID the theme differently.

If it's simply "Disco," the four remaining female contestants can choose to sing any disco song; if "Donna Summer" is the theme, they can choose only songs made famous by the diva. Which could be awesome or awful: "Barry Manilow" night a few weeks ago was very entertaining, but "Gloria Estefan" night was just painful.

In either case, I have read that HRH is scheduled to perform live on Wednesday night's show (May 12). Nice to know she still works now and then.

They are showing American Idol in Australia this time, for some reason.... may have to watch that one.

The contestants are all damn awful! We had much better competition on our Australian Idol!

Note for British viewers - American Idol can be seen on ITV2 on Freeview, Digital and Satellite TV.

I will try and watch this, since seeing Donna on TV is something of a rarity these days. My wife watches American Idol sometimes - it's worth watching just to see how the American starlets can't take criticism from our very own high-waisted Simon Cowell!

I hear ya, sonic! This feels like the worst kind of sacrilege for me, but girrrrrl, could that blazer be any tighter??! There's nothing at all wrong with being a full-figured gal--most of our favorite black divas end up there anyway--so just give in to it and wear something more flattering.

And when I said I wonder if anyone ever sees Donna's real hair anymore, since she's always plopping some huge wig on her head, my smart-ass husband said she's hoping that her big hair will offset the size of her hips.

If you didn't watch the show, the songs performed were "Everlasting Love," "Love You Inside and Out" (ugh), "Knock on Wood," "This Is It," "It's Raining Men," "Don't Leave Me This Way," "Holding Out for a Hero" (huh?) and "No More Tears (Enough is Enough)." And that last one was performed by a 16-year-old white girl who just rocked the house! A very ballsy choice, especially in front of The Diva herself.

Donna is scheduled to perform live on tonight's show. With the four female contestants as her backup singers, is there any chance they won't sing "Bad Girls" and "She Works Hard for the Money"??!

    lol!!

I think she's been wearing the same stuff on all her recent TV appearances.. I saw her on Wayne Brady and Sharon Osbourne recently, and she seemed to be wearing the same type of dark, too-tight blazer.. as someone alluded to earlier: Somebody please call her stylist! (if she has one, I'm thinking maybe not).. But still I would have loved to see her, I missed the episode last night!..but she's back again tonight.. I don't normally watch American Idol, but for Donna I will :)

Hey kidz, can I join the water cooler chat? :D

Yeah, I agree with the "Donna Needs A Stylist" brigade. She looked ready to go shoping at Walmart. The big wig comments remind me of Pauline Kael's crack about Liz Taylor in "Secret CeremonY"---"she wears her hair like upholstery" or something like that. Liz was a big-ole wingback chair in that one. She later became a barcalounger--then a sofa ( the John Warner years).

In regards to the show, the Hawaiian chick is obviously gonna get the boot tonight. The 2 black chicks were real good and that 16 year old (isn't she Hispanic with died blonde hair?) was a real threat.

I didn't agree that LaToya's version of "Don't Leave Me This Way" was "as good as the original"!!! But she was good. I loved her raspberry sherbert knit dress while singing "Inside & Out". She looked great, I thought.

Fantasia is good also. She has a voice sorta reminiscent of .....who is it? Deniece Williams? Nell Carter? Patti Jo? It has the nasally coronet sound that...hey, it's a compliment, I think.....that I like. Very commercial.

Well, lets' see what Donna & crew cook up for tonight's shindig!!!

Bye, bye Miss Macadamia Nut Pie (that's Miss Hawaii).

The voters on American Idol have no clue as to what talent is. They felt sorry for poor Jasmine, the Hawaiian chick, because Simon put her down. Jasmine cannot sing Weather Girls songs, and her version of "Everlasting Love" was weak. She is no different than Camille, the one who got booted a few weeks ago, who also had a weak voice. I was shocked when LaToya was booted off, but I have to admit, I didn't think "Love You Inside Out" was a good choice (it's not a disco song). Fantasia did good on "Knock On Wood". I must be the only one who likes her because no one else I know does. She has a voice that resembles Deniece Williams, and it's original compared to the usual diva assembly-line product we hear ad nauseum. Diana was the star last night. Not only did she look great, her choice of songs were superb. "This Is It" and "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" were so good to hear and I could see that this genre of music fits Diana perfectly. I never realized until yesterday that disco isn't the easiest kind of music to sing, especially if you're on American Idol.

As for Donna Summer, it was nice to see her sing as well as judge and thank goodness she had opinions, unlike Paula (who has hardly anything overtly negative to say about anyone-except Simon!). The medley the girls sung tonight was cool-but I wish Donna could go beyond the "Ain't I even worth a dime a dance" line. I was expecting "oooh ahhh oooh ahhh love-to-love-you-baybeeee"!

    They're all boring.

The best one was that little black chick who looked insanely mad while she was singing. She was great! I forget her name.

    LATOYA WAS ROBBED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely SHOCKING!!!! I was soooooooooo sure that Princess Jasmine of Hawaii was getting the boot, I was barely paying attention to the show. Then the shocking news--LaToya was joining Fantasia in the BOTTOM 2!!!!!

LaToya would have been my choice for winner. Elton John said he woulda offered her a recording contract.

America screws it up once again.

Don'cha think she always does "Last Dance" cause it's a safe, nonsexual, G-rated, Oscar-winning bonafide #1 hit?

Wonder if she ever performs "Love To Love You Baby" anymore? :o

La Donna appeared to be twice the size of the frosted Miss Seacrest.

However, when she sings....that voice melts me.

...which was originally written as a ballad about being so lonely, horny, and desperate that you'd go home with anyone who was left at the bar at closing time?

Seriously though, I remember reading an interview where she said she thought it was the best song she ever did (or one of them, anyway).

Donna seemed kind of tired to to me, perhaps resonating how sick she is of being dubbed "The Queen of Disco" (which I think is extremely sad, she should be proud of it, and promote herself as such, but that's another post). She is big compared to (the hot looking) Seacrest. She should have worn some sleazy tight 70's dress showing off her big booty and worked it on stage. Conserative and disco don't really go...

While I feel bad for LaToya, I also feel bad for Jasmine, because she could see how everyone felt about her last night. The white girl should have it made now.

OK, now imagine this....drum roll please: Imagine, Mr Seacrest announces a guest singer that will come out and perform. And who shall it be....but William Hung singing Love to Love You Baby dancing very seductively occasionally rubbing his crotch to the lyrics. It would have been hysterical.....

Except that William Hung is simply not funny. He is deluded and America is laughing at him, not with him. Nice America. Nice.

In an interview, Donna Summer said that when she became a "born again" Christain, she promised God that she would never sing "Love to Love You Baby" again.

This past weekend while I was at dinner with friends before going to see "Hairspray" (Bruce Vilanch is soooooo good as Edna!), I was told that Donna Summer was here in San Francisco last week! She was staying at the Sheraton Palace because she was the entertainment at some convention. I told them thanks alot for telling me after the fact!

Anyway, the main comment was that Donna is now "big as a house"! And, no, that comment did not come from a "vicious queen" - it came from a respectful (well, I think she is), straight woman! :P

    Donna's cake left the building

Yeah, having been an avid Donna Summer fan for many years I must say i was bored with her appearance. She seemed to look very plain in comparison to her VH1 appearance a couple of years ago.
That outfit was very plain ( I agree with the Walmart remark!) Had she not turned around and exited the stage after her performance I would ahve said she looked okay, however her butt was bigger than her hair!! What stylist in their right mind would let a performer go out on stage looking like that - From any angle??
She shouldn't have done Last Dance, that song only has justice served in its full form. I would have liked to have seen her do something a little more obscure like Sunset People or Dim All the Lights.
Confirmed - She has vowed never to sing Love To Love You Baby due to religious beliefs ever again.
She actually reminded me of Beau (Marshall's wife) in Absolutely Fabulous when she was commenting on the performances.
Don't take this the wrong way, I do love Donna (always have and will) but she did seem a little off with the pixies last week...

Do you mean Bo in the episodes of series 4? She sure had some volume pumped in her hair...

    :o :o :o :o
"What can't be said, can't be said and can't be whispered either!" :o :o :o

Maybe it's just good she doesn't peform love to love you baby anymore at her age. The song is more than just flirtation and more suitable for younger gilrs - like Beyonce. :P
