Best From Artist 88 - Sly & the Family Stone

Well, I want to pay tribute to some of the masters and innovators. I hinted at this band in the Graham Central Station "Best." Tragically, I remember reading years ago Sly wasn't doing too well.
Anyway, this band recorded some classics that occasionally made it in the clubs even though they had long since peaked in popularity. One of my favorites, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), was one that I remember hearing at the clubs. My other long time favorite is Hot Fun in the Summertime.
    Find them and destroy them!

Family Affair used to do well.
The rip snorter Dance To The Music (original version) would tear up any dance floor BITD and Everyday People had fans too.
I really liked If You Want Me To Stay (for the falsetto murmurings and the gruff "get my message over to you now" etc. Another one that I thought deserved better (in the UK) was I Want To Take You Higher (something I'd quite often sing to/over gawd knows how many records a decade or more later).

The one track I've really got into over the past year or so is The Same Thing That Makes You Laugh, Will Make You Cry from Sly Stone.

One of the first bands I remember growing up.... one of my first 3 45's was FAMILY AFFAIR. I will never tire of the last 15 seconds of that song.....

IF YOU WANT ME TO STAY is one of the finest funk records recorded, so f***ing pimp!

    SING A SIMPLE SONG
    HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME
    EVERYDAY PEOPLE
THANK YOU b/w EVERYBODY IS A STAR

    rounds out my favorite records....

Oh, god, so many... but I'll do just a few:

STAND --- The lyrics are outstanding and the last what, 40 seconds, is nothing but a jam.

DANCE TO THE MUSIC --- Exactly what the record made you do.

HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME --- Sleaze before there was sleaze. :D

SING A SIMPLE SONG --- This is the funky cut. House party down!

I WANT TO TAKE YOU HIGHER --- A club piece if there ever was one.

And don't ask me why but I love M'LADY. I can't explain it but it always turns me up. Everything about this song is free-fall fun. :)

    Hi Paul :D

It's a shame about Sly :( . He practically vanished off the music scene - I thought he passed away from an overdose. Well his music still lives in my heart and as I'm typing, I'm playing my favorite, most dearest song of his "Hot Fun In The Summertime" :P :D :P :D!!!!!!

    Other faves are:
    Family Affair
    Stand
    Everyday People

Sly and the Family Stone :D

My favorites (that I can remember):

I want to Take You higher
    Family Affair
    Hot Fun in The Summertime

I was a big fan of their's while I was in high school ('60s :-? ). They seemed to fade from the scene in the early '70s and by that time I was a fan of the Chi-Lites, The Stylistics,
Malo and other R&B and Soul groups. :D

Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) has the best bassline ever! I think it was remixed in the early 90s (by Todd Terry?? Could be wrong)... I used to have a copy of it but it was stolen years ago... can anyone remember? I think it was a good remix from memory!

    Love Sly & Family Stone!

Family affair makes me  ! lol
