    Worst Rock Song !

Just noticed that Blender Magazine's has listed "We Built This City" by Starship as the worst rock song of all time.
Different eyes see different things. Different hearts beat on different strings. But there are times for you and me when all such things agree...Rush

    Well, it's certainly up there!

"We Built This City" is the ultimate corporate rock anthem. Self-promoting, over-produced, meaningless, and utterly banal. With its success, the sell-out of rock was finalized, and the suits took complete control of the genre. Rock officially ceased to be all of the things that made it worthwhile in the first place: rebellious, dangerous, and conscious.

I'd like to add the following to the list:

    "Love Shack" B-52's
"Every Breath You Take" The Police
"Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald" Gordon Lightfoot

    and anything by Alanis Morrisette

Anything by REM (aka whiny crappy people), Guns'n'Roses or U2 I find quite distressing. Oh & you can pretty much rely on Phil Collins, Oasis or any 'Brit Pop' pretentious middle class ex art school bands to really piss me off.

Anybody want to create Rock Sucks movement? :D I generally dislike the whole genre too. There were so many power ballads on the mid 80's on heavy rotation in radio and so on, that it makes me sick just thinking about it

Mr.Mr., Foreigner - anything by them for starters!

Up until six months ago, my teenage son was into Nu Metal. One of the Cds I bought him was by a group called the Murder Dolls.

WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE HOW B-A-A-D THIS CD IS!

The vocals are made up of the F-word and not much else. I use the term "vocals" in the widest sense - more like primeval screaming! One of the songs is about killing his sister, I think .... The guitarist seems to be able to play one note only. And the production is so muddy as to make the whole thing unintelligible.

    Get the message?

At least my son has now changed his music style - to Hip Hop (Eminem and 50 Cent) and he likes the UK Pop #1 which is Eamon - (F*** It) I Don't Want You Back - so he is slowly moving in the right direction ..... I'll get him hooked on Seventies Disco yet! :P

    :)

    Jazz,
Suppose you could try to sneak in a Tom Browne cd inside a 50 cent cover and tell your son it's 50's long lost bootleg tapes or something.
Anything for the funk!! :D

What a cool thread. :D Unfortunately, I like some current rock... even tho it's depressing, loud & somewhat lame. But, I can understand why some people like the music.

Power Ballads: lmfao at some of the things said... I friggin' hate them... however, Whitesnake's -- Is This Love is OK.

Police - Every Breath You Take---- wtf were they thinking... :-? this song bites... it has no emotional feel for me.. & not sure why it was the best song of 1983 or 1984. :-? When it was remade rap style, I wanted to puke even more.

I dig mostly Classic Rock.... (pretty much anything from the seventies.

Seals & Crofts, Orleans, Bread, James Taylor, Carly Simon.

I hear the **** that they made and call music I want to immediately commit suicide by shoving a pencil through my eye!

Well... I get your point fellas but I really like rock. I even like Foreigner, a band that was pretty good in their first albums (same for Cheap Trick). The problem with many of these bands is that they had one or two AOR megahits (i.e. "I wanna know what love is", bleeech!) that saturated our ears and made us hostile to their CDs. (Also, they sound dated by now.)
    Anyway, here's my list:

    1) EUROPE - The final countdown (first BY FAR)
    2) STARSHIP - We built this city
    3) CHRISTOPHER CROSS - Alright... thing we're gonna make it!
    4) HEART - What about love (remember that guitar solo? and THE VIDEO?
    5) anything by JOURNEY
    6) SURVIVOR - Eye of the tiger
    7) anything by REO SPEEDWAGON
    8) anything by BIG COUNTRY
    9) TOTO - Rosanna (I'm just tired of this one)
    10) JOE COCKER - You can leave your hat on (and any other he recorded in the Eighties)

Well, I'll think of more... Born2Disco can help us with some of his creative emoticons :)

Oh yes Bon Jovi have committed some of the most awful crimes imaginable to vinyl. (& isn't it strange that Jon Bon Jovi is so attractive but strangely unsexy?)

The group that annoys me the most is Pearl Jam cause they're successful, critically respected, and yet...their music SUCKS!!!!!!!!!

And all the Eddie Vedder wannabes/soundalikes who imitate him with their annoying, garbled "yeah I've got a mouth full of **** yet I'm still singing" vocals!!!!

I bought most of their cd's thinking eventually I would get them.

Boy, I was a dope.

Now why anyone hates "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, I can't fathom? Terrific record. Classic.

Marky, I just never jumped on the bandwagon.... Maybe it was because the song was over exposed and overplayed to quickly could have been part of the reasons...

But remember, Marky, that the first who did this was Kurt Cobain. He compensated his talent and skill with that disturbing attitude, like "yeah, I'm here playing and you adore me but I have so many problems I don't care singing well..." Then he smashed his guitar to prove us that he was "against the rock mainstream" or something.
I remember laughing my ass off when I saw Al Yankovic's video parody of "Smells like teen spirit"... In the chorus he says something like "I can't understand what I'm singing/ because of all the pills I'm taking", and at that moment in the clip he opened his mouth to sing and all these colored pills went out like vomit! :)

(That said, yeah, Pearl Jam didn't EVEN have the talent.)

    Let's Rawwk

The Red Hot Chili Peppers annoy the hell out of me.

Like Pearl Jam it's because they are well respected, successful and absolutely diabolical. Also, his voice, like the bloke out of Pearl Jam, is just so overblown. They don't sing, they emote. I don't think Cobain's voice has much in common with these people though.

Of the modern crop, I find Dave Mathews, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, G.Love and all of those people so bland that they make me want to scream.

Also, all that Britpop shite....Rubbish, the lot of them. I mean Elastica, Space, ugh!

    Oh yeah... and 3 words:

    Dire F*cking Straits

    That is all
