What are some of your favorite old movies

I love a lot of movies from the 40s and 50s because they had to act and didn't have special effects to cover their asses for 'em  Examples:
    No Down Payment
    Hell To Eternity
    From Here To Eternity
    A Raison In the Sun
    The Postman Always Rings Twice
    Carmen Jones

You folks wanna share some with me?

The League of Gentlemen (1960). One of the most intelligent suspense thrillers ever made. Starring Jack Hawkins & Richard Attenbourgh.

    summery from imdb.com

"Involuntarily-retired Colonel Hyde recruits seven other dissatisfied ex-servicemen for a special project. Each of the men has a skeleton in the cupboard, is short of money, and is a service-trained expert in his field. The job is a bank robbery, and military discipline and planning are imposed by Hyde and second-in-command Race on the team, although civilian irritations do start getting in the way."

They sure don't make 'em like this anymore!

    Hey K-Bee.
I guess I need to rent the movie to see what the skeletons in the cupboard are.
I just found my old copy of colorized The Postman Always Rings Twice. I think I prefer the straight black & white version better. Also, Lana Turner was truly one of the most beautiful women to be in the movies.

I havent seen Citizen Kane in a long time, I've got the DVD but haven't seen it yet, I believe it has a very good commnetary by Rogert Ebert. "The Postman always.." it's a great film noir movie, I need to pick up this one.

Anything by Bogart is a treat for me , The new "Treasure of Sierra Madre" dvd is great with a historian's commentary full of interesting trivia, the same goes for the new "Casablanca" dvd.

I love Film noir, there is a new Noir Classics box comming that contains great classics.
"The Asphalt Jungle" (Cameo by Marilyn Monroe)
    "Murder my Sweet"
"The Set up" and "Out of the past" with Mitchum and Douglas, this one is great, the remake "Against all odds" doesn't even come close!
others classics, "Maltese Falcon" "The big Sleep" and "Double Indemnity" with Macmurray,Stanwyck and the great Edward G Robinson.

I recently discovered two great old horror/mystery flicks that somehow I never saw before.

    "The Night of the Hunter"(1955)
    "The Haunting" (1963)
    Good scary stuff....

OK, I've gotta get a camp classic mentioned here.

1939's MGM all-female spectacular, directed by George Cukor..."THE WOMEN"

One of the funniest movies I've ever seen. So many quotable lines. Best enjoyed at the Castro Theatre in SF with the company of booing & hissing & applauding& line-quoting savvy queens.

My fave character: Rosalind Russell as the scheming, back-biting, gossiping best friend/worst enemy bitch of all time...Sylvia Fowler, aka Mrs Howard Fowler. She is beyond hilarious--chewing the scenery and sinking her teeth into Paulette Goddard's leg. :D

Also the Countess DeLave portrayed by the delectibly dizzy Mary Boland..."L'amour, l'amour...toujour l'amour" "Let's have a little drinkie".

OK, now you can go back to the Testosterone Film Festival. :P

  I bought this years ago on VHS. Bill looked at me like I was crazy. I said, "You don't like this? These women are cats, baby!"

One of my old favorites is "Imitation of Life". My parents took me to see it when I was kid. This was the 1959 remake with Lana Turner. Years later I saw the original with Claudette Colbert. Like 'em both. Still breaks my heart when she rips open the door to the hearst screaming for Momma, Mahalia Jackson wailing in the background. Never forgot that scene even though I must have been 8 or 9 years old when I first saw it.

Speaking of testosterone, Cameron Mitchell demostrated a lot of that in No Down Payment.

The Adventures of Milo & Otis is my favourite old school film. It was made in 1989 so that's not really old school given most of you old guys were already going bald and fat by then but for us 90s kids that was like the classic film that defined our childhoods. Certainly was for me anyway!

    Paul,

"The Women" has some early slow patches with Norma Shearer at home with her annoying daughter (hisssssssss)--but once the other characters make their entrances--it's a hoot!!! I'd be curious if you would enjoy it. I wonder what you'll make of the fashion show within the movie. The clothes look like Adrian (the designer) was on crack or acid or just wanted these models to evoke laughs!!!! Lotsa pointeed witch hats and fake hands used to button coats!!! Veeeeeeery weird.

I agree that Cameron Mitchell was a walking testicle--sorta like an early version of Bob Hoskins--but better looking.

Aaah, horror movies: Christopher Lee as Dracula. All camp classics.

Monster movies: Godzilla and Rodan. (How sad is this? ) Oh --- don't forget Ghidra. (These japanese films were a hoot!)

Fantasy movies: Any Ray Harryhausen -- Sinbad and the like --- or the rip-offs. Jack The Giant Killer looks like an RH production but it isn't. Poor Thoren Hatcher was so overweight he was busting out of the wizard costume. :D

Hey Marky. My local Blockbuster didn't have "The Women." Perhaps it's a movie that AMC runs from time to time. I'll check their schedule.
Hey Nicky. I love those RH movies as well. The special effects from his movies have worn well over the years. I am still fascinated by them.

I know. That 'sense of wonder' seems to be missing from all these films. Roland Emerich's "Godzilla" was atrocious. 2002s "Reign of Fire" was on the right track but they dropped the ball somewhere. It's like, 'Great cg --- who cares'? I don't know if you remember but back in the 80s I think it was the guys who split off from Disney that did "Dragonslayer". Peter MacNicol from Ally McBeal had the lead. Even though they made you wait until the last possible minute, that monster creation was hot. Plus the medieval setting and everything made it so close to what we used to see as kids. I had hopes. All dashed. :(

I thin I've actually seen Dragon Slayer many moons ago...can't remember much of it, but if they used stop-motions it works for me :D

I agree about Reign of Fire - definetely some rather good computer generated monsters in there but unfortunately I thought the movie was pants in general.

Currently I'm having high hopes for the forthcoming "Alien Vs. Predator" flick. These are two of the most intelligently designed monster creations ever, and with the appropiate budget, it could proove to be a truly spectacular experience seeing them both in action.
Plot-wise it is most likey to be crappy beyond belief though, since it's a movie adaptation of a video game series....and we all know how those turn out.
    "Streetfighter The Movie" anyone!!??

"Alien vs Predator"...remember "Freddy vs Jason", "Godzilla vs Mothra" or anything else with the letters vs in it's title...:-)
I want to be transported into the worlds of: Five Dolls For An August Moon, Suspiria, Strip Nude For Your Killer, Danger: Diabolik!, Inferno, 10th Victim, Blood And Black Lace, The Black Belly Of The Tarantula, Roma, La Dolce Vita, Camille 2000 or anything featuring Edwige Fenech. Or Tarantino's vision of urban Japan seen in part one of Kill Bill - I WANT several of those yellow motorcycles.

OK, I was cruisin' through Hillcrest for some eats (easy efunk, it aint that kinda party  ) Oh, for those of you who don't know, Hillcrest is San Diego's gay neighborhood. Anyway as I was driving I passed a Blockbuster Video. Immediately I had an epiphany. Gay neighborhood, Blockbuster... The Women. Sho 'nuff, they not only had the video but the DVD as well. I guess my neighborhood Blockbuster just has too much testosterone Marky :D
So as promised, my review. It sucked! Just kidding  I really liked this movie. Yeah, the opening may be a little difficult to get through especially for guys today who are into immediate action. The fashion show I could also do without. Aside from those minor quibbles I found it thoroughly enjoyable. The character, Mary Haines, almost had me in tears when she got the ultimate bad news  I also loved the all female cast. Quite refreshing compared to what Hollywood is doing today. I just wondered if women might find the portrayals a little too catty despite the clever dialogue used throughout the movie!

I'll start worrying about you if you start renting "Cabaret", "Beaches" or "Mildred Pierce".
