    The Player by First Choice

    I found this 12" when I went to NYC this past winter. It's a re-release of the original with a FULL extended mix on both sides. The Player on the LP clocks in around 7 minutes,however, the 12" I found clocks in at 10:32. AND, the b-side features an instrumental version of the track that clocks in at 9:02. I LOOOOOVE this version compared to the standard 7 minute LP version. At the end there's lots of Vibes, chanting and lots of instrumentation and improvisation.. Otherwords, it fu**ing JAMS!! :P :P The only drawback is that there is an apparent hissing in the background like it was mastered from some cheap tape source.. :evil: :evil:

    Im curious if this was record is an exact reproduction of the original (if there ever was an original 12" single of this track).

    Here's the track listing.

    A TOM MOULTON MIX on PHILLY GROOVE RECORDS
    LABEL: PGR 001 (was this the first 12" release on philly groove??)
    Side: A:::: The Player 10:32
    Side: B:::: The Player (inst) 9:02

    I've seen this 12" at Amoeba. I resisted buying it...now I'm curious. I don't think this was ever on a 12". Just a 45 with the vocal on the A-side & and an instrumental on the b-side the two combined into the long version on the LP, 7:08, according to AMG. This was from the summer of 1974--no 12" records at that point.

    Thanks for replying.. Im very curious about the single myself.. Didn't TOM MOULTON do his own remixes before the advent of the 12" single? Could this be one them?? Also, the sound is very "Live" otherwords.. I don't see tom in the studio looping tape together to extend the track.. There are totally live portions on this track like Vibe solos and drum tracks that are no there on the LP version.

    The single ends somewhat like the 12"single of "HIT and Run" by Lolleatta Holloway .. where its obvious at the end of the track everyone is basically JAMMING away in the studio, and ablib (spelling?) the vocals and harmonies to the tune..

    The record definetely ROCKS!!!!!! but, that darn hissing :evil: :evil:

    Moulton

    I have heard several other alternative versions of classics that Tom has been re-mastering / mixing and they sound spectacular, and I think all contain at least some instrumentation that has not previously been heard.

    Also check the third(?) 12" on Philly Groove with his TJM 'I don't need no music' instrumental version.

    Yeah I've got this Tom Moulton remix... I like it, lots of space around the bass and drums.

    Hi everyone :D !

    Everytime I hear this song, a friend of mine comes into my thoughts. Everytime he drives me home he plays it at FULL BLAST. His car has a system to make your ear drums explode but what the hell, the song is off the chain! Both of us LOVE this song its so damn powerful and good to hustle to - one of the things we have in common. The only First Choice songs that I have are Let No Man Put Asunder and Double Crossed. The Player and Smarty Pants are my favorites and I need to get them ASAP and he has the long version that Disco Frank mentioned. I need to drop by Record Explosion and buy the damn thing before they close.

    When I was in NYC, I bought my copy in the village at Discomania.
