Here are a few of the classics I played this past Friday @ Larry Holmes Ringside:

Get ready for the future - The Winners
Come go with me - Pockets
    Joyous - Pleasure
Was that all it was - Jean Carn
    Groovy people - Lou Rawls
Say you love me girl - Breakwater
(One of my all time favorites)

Some of the slow jams I played were:

Where do we go from here - Enchantment
Just the way you are - The Chocolate Jam Co.
One day at a time - Pockets
This must be heaven - Brainstorm

just to name a few. I'd like to here your comments on any of these. Hope they bring back many good memories. As always,

    Hi Sammy and RU!

I like "The Pockets" very much, they was produced by some "Earth, Wind and Fire" members and... yes, they released a "Golden Classics" CD - a Collectable Series compilation, but the song "Breakwater" is not on it. Anyway is a worth CD.

    Peace,

    RU:

The Pockets LP with the song 'Come go with me' was released in 1978. They did release other material after that. Breakwater had at least two LP's that I know of. 'Say you love me girl' was on their second LP 'Splashdown Time' released in 1980, however, both LP's were excellent. Two very underrated bands from the '70's.

Don't worry, Blaxman, my friend. We all make mistakes - especially me!! (E.g. Gwen Guthrie and Cheryl Lynn!!)

Some really good gems in there, as always.

Pick of the bunch for me (as for everybody else, it seems) is that superb (and definitely underrated) Pockets "Come Go With Me". The quality end of the dance scene.

"Was That All It Was" - it's go to be "The Best Disco In Town" in London circa 1979. A converted theatre (sadly now a theatre again) - The Lyceum - used to host "The Best Disco In Town" every Friday night. Jean Carn's track was one of those big tracks from that era, I seem to remember, along with Joe Thomas' "Make Your Move" , and Phyllis Hyman's "You Know How To Love Me"
    Good memories indeed.

I remember Breakwater's "Say You Love Me Girl" was fetching silly money as a mid-1980's rare groove monster in the London clubs. So they re-issued three cuts from the album on a 12-inch - which I rushed out and bought. If you want to know which tracks, then I will dig them out for you..

"Joyous" is another of those rare groove tracks. I confess that I don't have it in my collection at present, but I know a couple of CDs that have the track, and it is on my list ...
If it moves - funk it!!

    Blaxman:

You read me perfectly as 'Pleasure' was definitely one of my favorites from back in the day. If you look at my three playlists so far I've played 'Get to the feeling', 'Now you see me' and 'Joyous'. All three from different LP's which are all great. On the mellow side I mentioned 'Thoughts of old flames', which is one of my favorites, however, what I have not mentioned is that I've also played 'Sassafras girl' and 'Ladies night out' on the mellow side. I think next week I'm going to play 'Ghettos of the mind'. Do you remember that one? I also think I'll be featuring music from another one of my favorite bands from back in the day 'Sun'. How do you feel about them? Pleasure discussing 'Pleasure'.

    Sammy,

Yes, I remember 'Ghettos of the mind'. I have it on a italian compilation CD (Irma Label) I cant remember the name. Great tune too! "Pleasure" is a great band. Great drummer and horn section!! I put them among other all time faves of me: Earth, Wind & Fire; Bar-Kays; Cameo; Kool & the Gang; Brass Construction; Con Funk Shun.

About "Sun", I like them too (in minor rank), I have the album "Sun Power" 1977 and it's OK. "Sun Is Here" is my fave song. I would like to get the instrumental version of it. If you play it on your club I certainly will ask you like in "Casablanca" movie:

    - Play it again, Sam! (LOL)

    Peace,

    Blaxman

No Limit (Beautfull track, its my fave!)
Do It Til The Fluid Gets Hot (Very funky!!)
    Work It Out (Soulful taste)

    Peace,

    Blaxman

I love all those bands you mentioned. I have most material on all. Other bands from that era that I love include B.T. Express, Slave, Mandrill and The Crown Heights Affair. Also of note are Brick, Tower of Power, Instant Funk, The Average White Band and War. Unfortunately, bands like these are a thing of the past. As for Breakwater, I dig those tracks you mentioned, however, on the first LP my favorite is 'You know I love you'. 'Splashdown Time' is also a fave. Was all this stuff played in Brazil during that era? Seems like a beautiful place I would love to visit.

Oh yeah, I love B.T. Express, Slave, Mandrill, The Crown Heights Affair, Brick, Tower of Power, Instant Funk, The Average White Band and War. I have many vynil and CD's from each one. I'm a funkateer!! See my nick - BLAXman - Blax from blaxploitation movies.(I collect blaxploitation tracks too)

Was all this stuff played in Brazil during that era?

Well...on the radio stations, some of them (more commercial), yes. EW&F, Kool & the Gang, Crown Heights Affair, Cameo. The others only in the clubs. In the present days, just on few radio programs (I make some special apearences on it)specialized in groovy and black music. I'm having some problems to write this post, language dificults, you know. I expect you understand me, ok?

And finally, be my guest to visit Brazil. Brazilian people is very receptive, be sure.

    Peace,

I love those groups you mentioned as well - I remember them all. What can I say - tracks like "Do It Till You're Satisfied","You and Me", "Funky Monkey", "Say A Prayer For Two" - they don't make them like that any more!! I don't think you can beat the Seventies sounds, do you? I mean, I have now been into this music for over 25 years, and I still get the same buzz from hearing the opening lines to, say, Brass Construction's "Movin" as I did all those years ago.

Like your "Happy Hour", I sit down with my Hi-Fi for my regular and essential "Friday Night Session". My house is big and old - ie solid and well built, so I can shut myself away and play the music as loud as I like ...

"Sun Is Here" is one of my current faves - as I put it on one of my recent MDs. So I guess I shall be listening to that one on the train tomorrow on the way to work. I also liked their "Space Ranger". Probably will pay it tomorrow nite as well ..

If you are interested, my current fave of the moment is Miroslav Vitous (hope that's spelt right) with this 9 minutes jazz-disco thing - "New York City". I've been after it for ages, and finally tracked it down on Audiogalaxy.com. An absolute blinding track!
    Do you remember that one?

As for the "Blaxploitation" thing, I love those album covers from those 1970's LPs with covers showing, say, a scene from NYC, in the Seventies - a run down tenement block, a big old American car, fantastic 70's steet style clothes. Love it. love it, love it. A good example that comes to mind - one of Fat Larry's Band's LPps (the one with "Center City".

Sam and Blax - keep up the good taste!!!

    You're right Jazz,

today is impossible to find multi-layered arrangements, real musicians, real singers like those bands had. Today is just drum programs and a couple of screaming people.Of course, there some exceptions but, I cant list anyone right now (LOL).

I have a small studio in my house. Me and my two years old son spent some time listening those tunes there. It's joyous see him claping and jumping "on the beat" at loud volume, of course.

Hey, I dont remember Miroslav Vitous song....I'm downloading it right now from AG, thanx for the hint. Later I'll make you to know my opinion about it.

And for last, Blaxploitation, yes I remember that Fat Larry's cover, they are runing across the street. You must like blaxploitation too, it's a quite jazz and funky style, isnt it?

Final thought: This forum is great!! We make friends in here.Dont you think?

    Peace,

    Blaxman

I agree - this forum is excellent. It's good to talk about the music with people who have enjoyed it just as much as myself - wherever they are in the world !! My company has an office in Rio, so if I get out there, I'll let you know!!

That Miroslav Vitous tune - hope you like it. It all came about in the late 70's when my friend, who had a massive and very comprehensive jazz fusion record collection gave me a list of the definite jazz funk records including Expansions etc etc, One track on the list was this "New York City". When I finally heard it, it blew my mind. It is definitely a "left-fielder" but I am hooked.

I tell you a good blaxploitation-type track that I love. The Ripple LP "Sons of the Gods" included , OF COURSE, "The Beat Goes On", but the rest of the album is very interesting. The title track is an excellent jazz reworking of the Charles Earland number, bur there is a really good blaxploitation track - "Do What You Wanna Do" - dealing with drug dealing on street corners etc. Good punchy bass line, hi-hat rhythm, screeching electric guitars - It just has that right 70's "feel" to it...

    Take care ...

I am happy to see that this topic has brought back many memories and there are others who enjoy this era as much as myself. Jazz, I really dig 'Sun' with 'Radiation Level' being my favorite track. Also, I listed 'Funky Monkey' by Mandrill in my previous happy hour playlist. Blaxman, I wanted to mention a CD compilation called 'Pimps, Players & Private Eyes' that came out aabout ten years ago. It was a ten track CD featuring theme songs from Blaxploitation films of the '70's. Some of the songs featured include:

    Across 110th street
    Make a resolution
    Are you man enough
    Trouble Man

to name a few. This is a great CD on Sire Records produced by Ice-T and Jorge Hinojosa. Just thought you may want to check it out, if you don't already have it.

That's it Jazz!! This is Disco Music!!!
I dont know any other kind of music with such "international and interacial interest". Yes, rock/pop has some of it, but disco is much more....blended.That's why we have so many nationalities enjoying this forum.(Thank Bernie)

My verdict about Miroslav Vitous.......I like it!! Yeeeaaah, really cool, a kind of Dexter Wansel (a first sight) I'll pay more attention to him from now on.Thanx for the hint.

About Ripple. Good band, I like so much "THE BEATS GOES ON AND ON " and of course "I DONT KNOW WHAT IT IS, BUT I'm SURE IS FUNKY", both are real jems.

When you'll be in Rio, let me know. Hey, bring some "rare disco" souvenirs to me, uh? (LOL)

    Peace,

    Blaxman

Not only was 'Across 110th Street' a great track, it was easily one of the better blaxploitation movies of that era. Some of the other tracks on the CD include themes from 'Foxy Brown', 'The Mack', 'Cleopatra Jones' and 'Shaft in Africa'. The next happy hour list will come out this weekend after Friday night's happy hour. Let's see what gems I can pull out of the crates for Friday.

    Sammy,

I'll be waiting for the next playlist on friday, be sure. Since you mentioned, "Shaft In Afrika" has one of my all-time favourite Blaxploitation songs. The track "YOU CAN'T EVEN WALK IN THE PARK" by Johnny Pate is a real classic. Outstanding (perhaps danceable?!? )tune.

    Peace,

    Blaxman
