1979. Extra credits if you name one of the producers - you know... the really famous one.

Well, the artist is Marlena Shaw; the lyrics are from the "Sweet Seventeen Suite" (I think that's the correct title) on her Take a Bite LP.

As for the producer, is Meco the one you consider "really famous"?

Two out of three; the title of the song is actually "Suite Seventeen". Well done.

I woulda got that one. Classic Troc. "Who's the boy that brought ya home last night? What's his name? Where he live? Who's his people?"

Jeff, while you were channelling Marlena Shaw you received interference from Barry White's "My Sweet Summer Suite".

Speaking of Ms. Shaw, I think I witnessed maybe the lowpoint of her career when all of a sudden on a Thursday night in the late 1980's, she was hoisted up on top of the pool table to sing "Touch Me In the Morning" to a backing track at The Spike, a cruise bar on Santa Monica Blvd., to a not particularly receptive crowd. She just appeared outta nowhere. I was thinking "oh, oh she's pullin' a Natalie Cole"---payment in nose candy--but that's just a wild guess. She's been recording her jazz stylings for Concord lately so things seem to have turned around for her.

My fave track is "Yu-ma/Go Away Little Boy" with her inimitable rap. Like Miss Linda Clifford, Marlena excelled at the verbal putdowns of her man's lazy-ass ways: " I know it's hard out there, but I expect every able body in the house to be out at least lookin' for a job" or something like that. Mayn great lines in that one. Marlena also had a good rap on "Street Walkin' Woman" as a ho contending with a separated married man with only $25 bucks to spend and, of course, her Disco Classic was the aforementioned "Suite Seventeen" that featured "It Was a Very Good Year/"Love Dancin'"/"I Thank You" and "Touch Me In The Morning".

All right, Mark! You mentioned my fave 2 from Marlena. My introduction to her was Street Walkin Woman from the "Who Is This Bitch Anyway" lp. (I hope I got the right title.) That rap --- <sic> 'It's been a long night... I'm tired... Your MONEY's tired...' Her delivery was just awesome. Been in love ever since.

I saw a Marlena Shaw concert in London in 1988. Just Marlena Shaw and her 3 piece jazz combo. I know a lot of people were upset at her "change" in musical direction at that time into more jazzy things. But for me it still ranks at the BEST live concert I ever saw.

Jazz Pilgrim: Isn't it amazing how entertaining Marlena's live performances are with minimal backup? I've been fortunate to see her perform live on several occasions starting in the early 80s. Many times in smaller more intimate clubs, which made her talent shine even brighter.

I remember after one show in this pretty tacky club, she went over to the bar after the show. She looked kind of depressed so we went over to let her know how much we enjoyed her show. We found out that not only is she talented, but she's a warm human being!

Yep, absolutely right. Sometimes keeping it simple is best. That's why I enjoyed the concert so much - her talent just shone through. You are lucky to have spoken to her.
I have only had the fortune tio see her just the once.

But, you know, she has a very large and loyal following here in the UK. After one concert over here, I remember her commenting in an interview that all the UK fans were asking her to sing songs from her Seventies repertoire, and she was amazed with the depth of their knowledge. Some of the songs they were asking for - she had completely forgotten about!!

Ya know, it's amazing to me that no one ever used Miss Marlena Shaw as an actress (at least to the best of my knowledge). Her lovely speaking voice and the exquisite timing she demonstrated on her spoken raps in several songs give a strong indication that she possesed other talents in addition to singing.

Now I suppose someone is gonna tell me her numerous acting credits. I better go to imdb and check before I get blindsided.
