Best From Artist 83 - Human League

Just a little off the the beaten path, I wanted to include these guys because a few of their songs made it into the discos. Hey, it was the 80s and synth oriented disco was popular. My pick that remains one a favorite for me is Don't You Want Me. I really liked the female vocalists respond in that song :)

    Hello Paul!

    My favorites are:

    Keep Feeling (Fascination)

I used to do a mix back and forth in the club... using both sides of the 12" version... worked for about 10 weeks... before they got tired of it. Great bass in that record..

    Human

played this one during the early part of the evening ... never tried it during prime hours... probably because it was way to slow... it had no life to it mixing in and out of SOS BAND records...

I used to have a real love/hate relationship with Human League.
I still like Don't You Want Me, simply because whether I like it or not, it was and still is an anthem. It was well produced, had impeccable production and sound and any record that had/has a whole dance floor singing the chorus, had to be respected. Very few records ever had that intensity of effect.
Trouble was, after that, anything else was always going to be second best.

"Human", The Jam & Lewis produced 1986 hit by them, is the only Human League song I've ever liked. So I'll stick to that one!

Beside the obvious hits "Don't You Want Me," "Fascination" and "Human" I also liked the "Love & Dancing" album with dubby remixes of tracks off the "Dare" album (which is now available as a bonus disc to the original).

If you like this 80s dance sound, you should also try their sort of comeback 2001 release "Secrets" which takes you back to their early 80s sound and is really awesome!

How many comebacks have these guys had? I remember they had hits in the mid or late 80s after everyone had written them off, and another in the mid 90s when everyone had given them up for dead.

Anyway, I loved "Don't You Want Me" back in the day, but I'm sick of it now. I still like "Love Action" from the same LP. I've yet to hear anything from their first two albums though, which I'm told are very very different from "Dare" and everything that followed.

    Dear Friends!
As an old New Romantic I was really heavy into HUMAN
    LEAGUE...try these trax:

    1)"Empire State Human" (LP/"Reproduction"/1979)
2)"The Black Hit Of Space" + "Being Boiled"(Diff.V.)
    (LP/"Travelogue"/1980)
3)"These Are The Things That Dreams Are Made Off"
    4)"Love Action(I Believe In Love)"
    5)"Seconds"
    6)"The Lebanon"
    7)"Human"
    8)"Being Boiled"(7"-Version)
    9)"The Path Of Last Resistance"(1979)
    10)THE MEN"I Don´t Depend On You"(12"/1979)

First there was THE MEN, then they changed into HUMAN
LEAGUE with some musicians of the later HEAVEN 17.
By 1981 they split and instead they put 2 Girlies into
    the group...the big success began.

i know its trashy, but their 1986 album "Crash", has some 80s trash classics like "I Need Your Loving", "Party" (my fav) and from "Hysteria", "Rock Me Again and Again and Again" was always a fav.

The Human League tippified the best of the synth-pop groups who emerged in the UK towards the end of the New Romantic and Brit-funk eras. I like their lesser known tracks "Hello Louise", "Life On Your Own", "The Lebanon", and "Love Action".

They had a great comeback single in the '90s "Tell Me When", which had some serious chart action in the UK. They really fit in well with the younger dance acts on the scene.

Phil Oakey of the group is a bit of a disco head apparently. I remember reading an interview with one of the girls from HL & she complained that he never wanted to do anything other than stay home & listen to his Evelyn King & Donna Summer records. Let's hear it for big Phil! :P

At the time, I hated to listen to synthesized disco or hi-nrg stuff. Now I love it thanks to the pet shop boys (when I say "now" I mean late 80's/early 90's).

But I can't stand Don't You Want Me.... By the way, I heard a new version recently, covered by Alcazar I think.

I never cared for Human League but BEING BOILED is great. But the best version of this song is a very electronic-pet-shop-boyish-style recorded by ICEHOUSE in their album of covers.

"Don't You Want Me Baby", and then only in it's extended format mixed in-and-out of the 3+minute original. :x

    Hi Paul :P

HL was one of my favorite groups in the 80's. "Don't You Want Me Baby" is still my favorite all-time classic and like NickNack said the extended version is more desirable. No matter how many times its played on the radio (Lite FM, CBS-FM, 102.7 FM etc...I sing along as if its the first time I've heard it.

Another good tecno-dance track was "Hard times" (1983). Very cool to mix.
