"Take A Bite" is another not avalible in the US CD that I wish was  How is the mastering on it? If its much better than the vinyl I may add this to my list of over priced imports I must get
Hi!
Im from Australia and it can be hard finding classic disco on CD. I do find Amazon.com good.
The latest CD I got was "Take a Bite" by Marlena Shaw, which has one of my all time favourites Suite Seventeen. How do any other Aussie forum members find the hunt for classic disco on CD in Australia?

I got the Take a Bite CD from the USA though Amazon, The sound is great to me! But Im not a DJ. On the front of the CD is a sticker called Soul Mine, Sony Music can't remember what I payed but it was cheap for a CD from the States!
Hey, I'm a 20yr old disco fanatic and starting out dj who lives in Queensland. It is hard to find stuff, but I have found some cool cds through the net (AMG American Music Guide) is a pretty cool guide to cds to import (I found "Smokin Disco" and "Dare To Be Disco" this way, and a sick compilation out last year called "Disco Sessions", check it out, its got beauties like "King Tim 3" by THe Fatback Band, "Lets Get Together" by Pam Todd and an awesome 12" mix of Gene Chandlers "Get Down". Oh and Kenny Dopes "Disco Heat" is cool too.
I made a first time visit to REPLAY records at Stones Corner Brisbane, Australia and scorced a few great CD's two compilations Club Connection and Natural High 2 and CERRONE by Bob Sinclar. The comps have stuff like Chameleon - Game of Life, Art Webb - You Can't Hide Love, Stacy Lattisaw - Dynamite. I checked out Atlantis Music at Southport Gold Coast, Queensland Australia, what a great store a lot of great 12" singles there!
hey disco devil, where bouts are you located down here? that will help us all give you some pointers on where to look!
Hi bryanbergman!
Not sure what you mean by where I am down here! Im from the Gold Coast, Queensland.
just meant where you are located, so we could perhaps recommend some good record stores in your area (if able to).
I'm in Melbourne, an not knowing much about GC it's tricky for me to suggest - but I can say that you could look at a number of CD compilations I am aware of: (off the top of my head)
Disco Spectrum (all volumes) (BBE)
Disco Forever (compiled by Dimitri) (BBE)
Disco 54 - Best of AVI Records
Jumpin'
Jumpin' Vol 2
Best of 12" Old Gold (All CD issues of this series are worth getting)
Kenny Dope's Disco Fever
Club Epic (any volumes)
Any kind of unmixed Salsoul Classic compilations
Salsoul Disco Funk
Mastercuts Classic Disco
Mastercuts Classic Jazz-Funk
Mastercuts Classic whatever!!!
That's all I can think of (off the top of my head) at this point in time, pretty much all of the disco I buy and own is on vinyl, but I certainly do buy CD compilations when they are well worthy...!
Happy to help - welcome to the BEST disco forum there is!
Thanks bryanbergman!
You have been a great help! I will certainly be looking for those comps you mentioned. Brisbane is easy for me to get too if you know of any good stores CD or Vinyl.
Bryan has also been known to do some disco mixes of his own... much nicer than any you can get in the shops! ;) Hunt around this site... there may be something of his you can download!

Hi again!
First of all, if you are also interested in grabbing the recent Salsoul repress series (remasters by Tom Moulton on vinyl) then grab yourself a whole bunch of them from Mezabel: www.mezabel.com and go to the disco section. They are based in right there up in Brisbane and stock a great range of disco repressings, make sure you check down the bottom of each listing page for additional pages! Local pickup is available also.
Some more comps available on vinyl and CD:
Larry Levan's Paradise Garage (Salsoul remixes by Larry)
Disco Connection Authentic Classic Disco 1976-1981 (WEA) This collection is fantastic!
Disco Juice - The Funky Disco Sound of Harlem's P&P Records (all volumes)
Salsoul Presents Disco Funk Flavas (Pinnacle UK) Very good comp revealing great Salsoul tracks not usually put on comps
Danny Krivit - Edits by Mr K
Salsoul Classics 20th Anniversary (vinyl is a box set)
The Salsoul Classics 2 (Vols 3 & 4)
The Disco Box
Larry Levan's Classic West End Records Remixes (Made Famous at the Legendary Paradise Garage)
and of course our Canadian friends at Unidisc have a huge collection of repressed vinyl and CD compilations!
have fun!
Bryan
So, Bryan, care to fill us Melbournians in on those hot places to go gold mining?![]()
Thanks for the info Bryan!
What a great site Mezabel is! I hope to go shopping for some music from them soon!
for the past few years it's become very hard in Australia, i used to find some good old 12's & LP's at a shop in Camberwell call "Antiquarian" - but I don't think they are open anymore... a number of years back (in the late 90's) you could still find a reasonable amount good disco 12" and LP titles at Dixons, but not anymore - just alot of rubbish except the odd gem that appears... Vinyl Solution in Cheltenham is still a very good place to dig - but be warned there's alot of stock to dig through! Also check out Alley Tunes in Camberwell, bargain bins are very handy sometimes - and they do have dedicated sections for disco/funk.
Apart from the 7" singles I still have from when I was a kid, I've personally been collecting classic 1970's disco on 12" & LP since about 92, so these days having found most of the 'op shops' and records stores dry of what I'm after, i pretty much source most of my disco overseas via ebay or gemm. Prices via both these services are high, but fortunately with a large vinyl disco collection already, filling the gaps is not too painful...
If you're starting out, try the avenues above, can be surprising what you find.
Perhaps one of the most bizarre finds (in terms of location) was an original US 12" press of Lonnie Liston Smith's "Space Princess" I found in the late 90's at an op shop on North Rd, Ormond! I think I paid about $1 for it :-) I still play it out today!
have fun!
Bryan Bergman :-)
Second Spin is sometimes a good place to hunt in Melbourne if you can be bothered.... have found a few decent disco 12"s there. But basically, save yourself the legs.... use the 'net. ;)

Yeah, I've tried the proper shops you mentioned. Used to go to Vinyl Solution during my breaks from uni when it was still in Oakleigh not so long ago, found some alright stuff there but nothin major :-? Found a 50c copy of a Gary's Gang 12 though in an op shop, was rather chuffed, same with Sister Sledge "I Wonder Why" too
I've started using Gemm and found some good stuff at Alley yesterday, Second Spin I've found rather dry, but since I'm not all that good with disco stuff apart from knowing a few of the bigger labels like Prelude, Salsoul and stuff, it would be very easy to miss something that was awesome, so places where there's lots of it and you can listen to it are good. That's what seems to be missing.
What's Warren's on Chapel St, St Kilda like for disco?
warren's record paradise is as dry as warren's personality - don't bother...
LOL - do tell! :lol:Originally Written by bryanbergman
