obviously d-train has got to be mentioned! :D
I think France Joli is a good start :D :
France Joli "Come To Me"
Jeanette "Lady" Day "Come Let Me Love You"
Musique "Summer Love"
Saturday Night Band "Come On Dance, Dance"
Bobby Thurston "Check Out The Groove"
Theo Vaness "No Romance / Keep On Dancin'"
What about you guys ???
obviously d-train has got to be mentioned! :D
Unique - What I Got Is What You Need.
If stranded on a Disco desert island, this would be one of the 12 records I'd choose to have.
Not sure where to start...Prelude was the first disco label I took notice of, back in 1980.
Gayle Adams 'Stretch' In Out'
Unlimited Touch 'Searching To Find The One'
D-Train 'You're The One For Me'
Starshine 'All I Need Is You'
Jeanette 'Lady' Day 'Come, Let Me Love You'
The Strikers 'Body Music'
...and many others. An essential label.
What would you do without your muesli...where would you be without a bowl?
I got introduced to disco when I was 13, 7 years ago now, and a friend of my mums sent me a disco comp called "Disco Shine". Sharon Redds "Never Give You Up" (mercifully absent from the top 500) was one of the first disco songs I heard. It also featured Youre The One For Me by DTrain and on a double cd put out last year called "Party People Present:Boogie Nights", this, along with Sharons "Can You Handle It", Gayle Adams "Love Fever", and the awesome "What I Got Is What You Need" by Unique featured. These tracks along with "Check Out The Groove" by Bobby Thurston also appear on a 1995 cd called, um, Check Out The Groove. Macho Im A Man is pretty wicked too. Oh, and Sine "Just Let Me Do My Thing". I can't get any Prelude comps here in Australia. Any fellow Aussies willing to sell, sell, sell??
Prelude had some great records...
D-Train, Musique.... etc. etc. etc.
my favorite 12" prelude release is:
Unlimited Touch - I Hear Music In The Streets :)
groove it to your body - michael wilson (amazing fk dub)
funn - gunchback boogie band
Prelude had an amazing roster. What happened to the label? Did it go bust?
How about the track "Cash In My Pocket" on the High Gloss album. :D
Easily one of my favorite labels. Here are some other songs, I did not see mentioned previously, that definitely deserve some recognition:
You and me just started - Linda Taylor
I'm a man - Macho
Dyin' to be dancin' - Empress
Must be the music - Secret Weapon
Keep on - D-Train
On a journey - Electric Funk
Just to name a few. A classic label indeed.
Easy,
Sam "ALL JAM"
"I Hear Music In The Streets" - Unlimited Touch, 1980.
Ah, Prelude....
My faves:
"You'll Never Know" - Hi Gloss (smooth and sultry morning classic)
"Come Let Me Love You - Jeanette "Lady" Day (killer percussion and hooks galore--a dance delight--just try to keep your feeeeets from tapping)
"Sentimentally, It's You" - Theo Vaness (total change of pace (fast Euro) for this predominantly R&B label)
"The Heart To Break The Heart" - France Joli (not my usual type of record--a "Fan Queen " Drama Diva fave--but I have good memories of this)![]()
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
'The Key' - Wuf Ticket ('83)
'Im a Man' - Macho (seventy eight)
'Keep on Walking' - Rod ('82)
'Caught Up In One Night Love Affairs' - Inner Life ('79)
'Bad Boy' - Theo Vaness ('79)
'Ite Missa Est' - Martin Circus ('79)
'Keep On Jumpin' - Musique ('79)
'Just Let Me Do My Thing' - Sine (seventy eight)
'Keep Those Lovers Dancing' - Saturday Night Band ('79)
'If You Can Dance' - Slimline (aka Mike Leander) ('82)
'Keep On - D Train ('82)
'Youre a Winner' - Sharon Redd ('83)
Jeez, I could go on for hours, what a fabulous contribution to the disco era Prelude made!
...ya gotta beat the street......
Out of the ones mentioned so far, my favourite is Saturday Night Band - Come On Dance Dance
I would add to the list:
Passion - Don't Stop My Love (instr)
Mastermind - Hustle Busstop
:)
If it moves - funk it!!
Hey, jazz, nice to hear from you. I'd forgotten about Passion; I liked most of their stuff.
...ya gotta beat the street......
Let's not forget the double-sided Prelude hit by Lemon
"Chance To Dance" b/w "A-Freak-A"
"oooooohh, it's the jungle baby--
It's hot, it's hot, it's HOT"![]()
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Tryin' To Get Over (Instr.) 8) - D Train
In The Name Of Love - Sharon Redd
You'll Never Know - Hi-Gloss
In New York - Passion
Love Fever - Gayle Adams
So was all the France Joli stuff released on Prelude in the U.S.? Everything by her I've been able to find over here (which is not much I might add) has been on the french Dreyfuss label."The Heart To Break The Heart" - France Joli (not my usual type of record--a "Fan Queen " Drama Diva fave--but I have good memories of this
A dj friend call me a Preludologist....
....you named a lot of great tracks, but some enormous Prelude is still missing.....
BROADWAY: X15 (legendary Patrick Adams instrumental)
BILL BRANDON: We fell in love while dancing (pure soul disco for one of the rarest Prelude 12")
INNER LIFE: I'm caught up in one night love affair (quintessencial Patrick Adams/Jocelyn Brown)
DAYBREAK: Everybody get off (would never stop listening to)
PRANA PEOPLE: Pranian man (Continuously growing soul by The Aleems)
SHARON REDD: Can you handle it (The legendary FK remix!)
DISCONNECTION: Dead on the case (jazz disco at its best)
LAX: All my love (instrumental)(only available on the promo release)
CONSTELLATION ORCHESTRA: Perfect love affair (perfect disco affair)
VISUAL: The music got me (the milestone of house music)
Linda Taylor was mentioned in this thread. I have earlier singles from her on brittish labels, including You and me just started. I also know she has done some vocals for Shakatak. Is she "pure" Prelude or was she just distributed by Prelude in USA and Canada and only for this song? Are there other artists on prelude that has other origin??
Has anybody mentioned Sticky Fingers? Wasting my Love is good Disco.
This topic led me to pull out all those old Prelude collections from the early 1980s and give 'em a listen.
Among the gems not yet mentioned:
"Your Love Is A Lifesaver" - Gayle Adams (Nicky once said she was a bitch-on-wheels or something cute like that) :P
"Walking On Music"/Fly With The Wind" - - Peter Jacques Band
"Moment Of My Life" - Inner Life
"Feed The Flame"/"Learning To Dance All Over Again" - Lorraine Johnson
"Somebody Else's Guy" - Jocelyn Brown
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."

The thing about Passion - so typical of many Prelude records - was the sheer power of the beat. And the Passion tune really did smack out one hell of a punchy bass !!

Wow. You guys have mentioned just about every song I can think of. I'd have to go do some diggin' through my bin to find others. Should we nominate them as thee best label for our music? :)
Find them and destroy them!
Paul you took the words right outta my mouth! Speaking of those Prelude 12inches, I have to ask my mother what happened to some of those albums :-? ??. My favorites were Unlimited Touch, Strikers, France Joli.....some of the others artists mentioned earlier are unknown to me. Whoever listed "You'll Never Know", thanks for the group's name so now I can add that to my "must get list" :P !
*DEEELITEFUL*
So what did happen to this label anyways?
Find them and destroy them!
They pressed and distributed the Savoy label for a while in the middle '80s, then wound down totally - after failing to hit the mark with their Prelude sister label, Prologue.Originally Written by paul
Marvin "dude" Schlachter (sic.) now oversees the dodgy Mic Mac label with MS, Jr. He'll always be The Man!
