KC & The Sunshine Band's second album, The Sound of Sunshine (1975) was entirely instrumental. Although they are all great tunes, I have to nominate Shotgun Shuffle as my favourite KC instrumental. It stands alone as an instrumental piece; it was not an arrangement of a vocal piece.

Oh, and I have to add Walter Murphy's "Beethoven's 5th." Of the ones I've heard, that has to be my favourite disco instrumental and arrangement of a classical piece. It really sounds convincing to me, as a disco song, whereas others I am constantly aware that this is not made for disco.

Herbie's "3 a.m." from his brilliant "Mr Hands" LP is a corker!
Also, I quite like Azimuth's "Light As A Feather".

Yup..talkin' about Azymuth we have to list "Jazz Carnival" and "The Prisor" as well.

Thankfully, the band is still around today. They released a more than decent cd in 2001 entitled "Before We Forget" on the Far Out label.

Better off going for the original version of 'The Prisoner' - it's on their 'Aguia Nao Come Mosca' album, as 'A Presa'. Space fusion :o

    K-Bee,
The Azymuth LP "Aquia Nao Como Mosa" (Eagles Don't Eat Flies) was released in Brazil & Japan on Atlantic, their second LP. The first LP is Self titled on Som Livre. (also came out in the early 80s on Carrerra in France, titled "Early Years") There are a few other things by Azymuth done early on in their career, such as a Sountrack called "O Fabioloso Fittipaldi" (about the racing car driver, music by Marcos Valle) The Espigao soundtrack was their first recording for Som Livre in 72, and there is a four track ep on Polydor records from 75 which has the original version of "Tempos Atras" (also recorded by Airto with Bertrami on keyboards)
There are a few other things done by Azimuth, only not credited as them! I know Alex the bass player, who gave me the details of these tracks. (which I was fortunate enough to pick up over the last few years)
They were also very busy playing as a unit on other peoples records throughout the 70s, so there are some great tracks with their distintive sound in the background of Brazilian singers such as Dafe, Hyldon, Orlandivo, Helio Matheus & Silvio Cesar.

Ah, those pesky instrumentals. Everytime you hear a tape from back in tha day---they're the hardest to name.

I thought once about trying to give definitive descriptions of the major instrumentals for future reference here.

Like how to tell "The Break" from "Hot Wax" or "Underwater" or "Traffic Breakdown". These were major culprits on old Trocadero tapes.

Then the Herb Alpert "Beyond" vs. "Manhattan Melody" vs. "Route 101", etc.

K-Bee, it was reissued in Japan in 1982, then in Brasil in 1993 - these copies are of excellent quality and you may see them occasionally. It was bootlegged in the UK a couple of years ago, also. It's on CD too - firstly as a Brasilian bootleg (though cut from the masters!) and I think Warner Brasil have issued it in recent years. Great cover, too.

Azymuth are one of my favourite bands - they were my introduction to fusion and I hung out with them for a bit when they came to the UK, in '97. Natch, I got them to sign all my records - they were freaking over the 'Zombie' single and wanted to take it back with them - none of them had a copy.

By the way, their weird 'Live At The Copacabana' LP from 1985 has just been issued by Charly in the UK. It's not really live - just a remix of the 'Light As A Feather' album. The version of 'Carnival' is even longer than the original mix, with a long drum intro. Strictly for Aztronauts and completists...

By the way, did you know they took their name from a Marcus Valle track??!

Here are some 12" releases I used to dance to back in the days!

    OLYMPIC RUNNERS : SOLAR HEAT
    FRANCINE McGEE : DELIRIUM
ATMOSFEAR : DANCING IN OUTER SPACE / MOTIVATION
    RAMSEY LEWIS : SPRING HIGH
KEITH BARROW : TURN ME UP (INST)
    RINDER & LEWIS : LUST
SEA LEVEL : SNEAKERS FIFTY FOUR
    EDDIE HENDERSON : PRANCE ON
RAHNI HARRIS : SIX MILLION STEPS (INST)
    INVERSIONS : LOCO-MOTO
PAULINHO DA COSTA : LOVE TILL THE END OF TIME
    RAH BAND : SLIDE

By the way, forgot to mention on the earlier Azymuth thread, that when they started out they were four in the band! The fourth member was Ariovaldo, he played percussion as a member of the band up until their second LP release "Aguia Nao Come Mosca" (only credited as a guest player on this release)

    gvtaylor & forrrce,
Thanks a lot for all this valuable info on Azymuth. Stuff like this, you won't find on AMG  :P.

"Alex - the bass player" I assume that is Alex Malheiros...I actually have his "Atlantic Forrest" solo-LP from 1985 - obiously very Azimuth-sounding & rather good too!

    K-Bee,
Alex the bass player is the man himself Alex Malheiros. There is also a solo LP he recorded in Brazil called Zenith, recorded with Bertrami & other guests in the early 90s.
The origin of the bands name comes from when they recorded the soundtrack O Fabioloso Fittipaldi, released in 1973 on Philips. The music is all written by the great Marcos Valle and his brother Paulo Sergio Valle. (played by Bertrami, Mamao, Alex & Ariovaldo)
The guys asked Marcos if they could use the name of one of the tracks for their band name, he agreed, and the rest is history.
The original version of the track "Azimuth" appears on the Marcos Valle album Mustang Cor De Sangue released in 1969 on Odeon.

    Hi !!!
In reality, "Águia Não Come Mosca" (1977) is the third work of Azimuth. Yep, the first is "O Fabuloso Fittipaldi" (1973/Philips) and the second is "Azimuth" (1975/on the Brazilian label 'Som Livre')

Daniel Sentacruz Ensemble! This Italian group first hit big with SOLEADO, theme for the 1975 mondo movie Magia Nuda. They then issued a number of interesting rhythm tracks with some abstract chanting and lots of wild percussion. From the Soleado album try a good version of "Corazon", and from the "Daniel Sentacruz Dos" lp things like "E A Rio" - stop&go effects, weird melodies, intense tribal drumming, trancey chanting, all slightly off the beaten track.
Michel Legrand was/is a French easy listening/soundtrack veteran. He had one respectable Costandinos sounding dance album out in 1977 called DISCO MAGIC CONCORDE which contained 2 long medleys of his classic themes done disco - The Young Girls of Rochefort, Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Windmills of Your Mind from The Thomas Crown Affair, romantic stuff like that tied by a new central tune.

Michel Legrand doing disco??!! Hmm somehow i'm not really surprised at all. he really was (is) a versatile guy covering all kinds of stuff.
The Jazz recordings he did are brilliant, especially the "Legrand Live Jazz" RCA Novus 1991 reissue of some mid 70s concerts feat. Ron Carter & Phil Woods among others.
