I've seen Dimitri from Paris spin live sets 3 times now, but I must admit I really do enjoy the stuff he puts out on cd/lp more than the live shows...

The recent "In The House" 3cd set on Defected is quite something and of course we all know "Disco Forever"

The stuff done on his "CD" releases isnt authentic and not live spinning. Its done kinda like using a cool edit pro or acid pro computer program but done in a recording studio. So since I never seen him live I cant judge him as being great or not but..I will say he does pick some damn good tracks

I don't know whether the cd's are live spinning or not and frankly my deer (yes, deer...not dear LOL) - I don't give a damn!!  U now I love my Acid Pro Jimmy!
Dimitri is all about digging up old and obscure stuff and bringing it to a new audience and I can't think of anybody I know who has been able to suceed in just that more than him.
Myself being reluctant to fully enjoy his live sets (the ones I've seen at least) is mostly due to his catering for the audience by playing current commercial hit singles. The last time I saw him he even played Janet Jackson's "all for you"......definetely not what I payed loads of money to see and hear.

I dunno - i don't think much of the guy. the fact he's delivering some great old tunes to a new audience is awesome, but i don't agree with the whole "lock the song on tempo" thing just so his mixing is made easy.

The funny thing is when you've heard the originals so much you get used to how they are - and hearing them locked on tempo sounds wrong to me, even if it's just the intro/outro. my ear can pick it up - no drummer is that perfect and i like the fact that nearly all disco contains the human element of error. it feels "right" and disco mixes are mostly short, sweet, yet smooth with a bit of impact rather than melting them together for a minute or more. (of course there are known exceptions to this rule!!)

I love house, I love disco - but disco is disco. i dig house tracks that sample disco tunes and love hearing influences of disco in today's music - and it keeps my trainspotting mind very healthy and my bank balance low ;-) House likes to sound like Disco which is fantastic - but Disco isn't house and that's my opinion!

    Cheers all

I also don't give a damn about mixing songs one on to the other. I would even prefer he had recorded "his cds" unmixed, so I could listen to the songs in its entirety.

But his choice of material is absolutely great.

And as a bonus, the way he mixed TATA VEGA'S GIVE IT UP FOR LOVE into DEEP SENSATION's CAN'T GIVE YOU UP on his AFTER THE PLAYBOY MANSION album is fantastic (not only the beats mix, but the key of the tune).

He has some great songs on his 2 PLAYBOY MANSION albums:

TALKING ALL THAT JAZZ - Stetsasonic (a disco/house remix, not the original rap)
    STARS by MECCA HEADS
NICE AND SLO by LIL LOUIS
I GOT THE RYTHM by BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE
    REACH INSIDE by BAH SAMBA
not to mention classic disco (Cerrone, La Pregunta, Rinder & Lewis, The Originals, etc...)

I like the way he mix old disco with new house with a disco flavour.

Dimitri live is not as good as Simon Lee of Faze Action. While Simon respects his material and does not housefy classic beats Dimitri keeps meddling with drum machines and looping the breaks. He IS good of course and most entertaining in a club situation - but does that Salsoul cd not rather clinical and almost inhumanly precise sound?

I could not agree more with what Bryan wrote about " housefyed" Disco songs.
Damn! Why are today's D.Jays so iritated with that good oldschool beat, that they try to replace virtually every disco
groove with some computer locked overamplified thump thump, usually completely destroying the magic of song while playing it too fast, just to be consistent with "trendy"
( read uniformistic, formulaic) music production ??? I tend to love good house music, but as the time goes It starts to annoy me as much of it has become too ? - looped ?, overemphasized or simple boring! I can feel the downfall approaching. Or am I maybe wrong?
