    DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES

This will appeal to Daryl Hall & John Oates fans OR 80’s fans.

I recently bought 2 CDs released only in Japan: 12 inch collection Vol. 1 & 2 (12” remixes from Hall & Oates 80’s singles). Although the cds are expensive it is worthwhile having them. They are all 80’s original remixes (not done now).

    The highlights are:

    MANEATER (extended club mix)
I CAN’T GO FOR THAT (extended club mix)
I CAN’T GO FOR THAT (Ben Liebrand remix) - excellent this one
    ADULT EDUCATION (extended mix)
METHOD OF MODERN LOVE (extended mix) – not as good as the album version
    MISSED OPPORTUNITY (unlimited mix)
DOWTOWN LIFE (dowtown remix) – not as good as the album version
OUT OF TOUCH (extended version) – not as good as the album version
    OUT OF TOUCH (dub mix)
SAY IT ISN’T SO (special dance mix)
    POSSESSION OBSSESSION (special mix)
    PRIVATE EYES (UK mix)
    FAMILY MAN (extended dance mix)
DANCE ON YOUR KNEES (extended version)
    ONE ON ONE (club mix)
KISS ON MY LIST (previously unreleased mix)

There are other songs but these mixes are the best. The only 90’s track is a house mix for I CANT GO FOR THAT (hoax remix) done over the record, but interesting.

Brilliant. I got most of those on a vinyl 'best of...' LP in the early '90s. 8)

    Paulo,

Very interesting. I've always liked most of Hall and Oates material since I was kid. My fave being "I Can't Go For That."

Apparently Daryll Hall has more of a connection to Disco and Philly Soul than many may know. I just wrapped up an interview with the lead singer of Executive Suite who did the 1973 hit, "When the Fuel Runs Out" and he told me it was Daryll Hall who changed their name from The Millionaires to Executive Suite. In addition, Daryll wrote a song "Christine" for the group and even sang on it. I was also told that Daryll Hall frequently interacted with many greats of Philly such as Bobby Eli and others while they all worked at the Shubert theatre.

All that seems to be missing is the 12" remix of "Running From Paradise"--their first excursion into dance music.

Came out in the landslide of product released in 1979--sorta overlooked; but very good.

    Marky,

I don't think I've heard that song, "Running." Is it along the lines of "I Can't Go For That" or faster dance rock?

    Bernie,

"Running From Paradise" is from the 1979 "X-Static" LP

    AMG says:

After coming up with a sleek and soulful template on Along the Red Ledge, Hall & Oates took a temporary detour on X-Static, concentrating on disco rhythms. A few tracks were successful — in particular, "Wait for Me" — but the record sounds unfocused and misguided. — Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The LP cut: Running from Paradise (Allen/Hall) - 6:37 --very disco- dance/rockish (it was 1979, after all) (around 118 bpm)--but there's a 12" I found at Amoeba that discotizes it much more.

The lyric is something like..."if you're lookin' in your heart and you don't see it in my eyes then you're runnning from paradise" or something like that.

Maybe I knew this song cause I had the LP back then.

good shout bernie daryll hall actually recorded a couple of records for the arctic label in philly in 1967 as part of a group the temptones, theyre both really rare but 'girl i love you' is the most sought after on e.bay would sell for up to $2000 labelmates were the volcanoes[trammps] barbra mason, kenny gamble.amongst the staff bobby eli, norman harris, earl young.
philadelphia must have been an awesome place at that time with many other labels at that time putting out a great sound,i played one the other day the ethics 'standing in the darkness' on vent records way way ahead of its time [1969] the philly sound as we know it was definately around in the 60s thanks to all those guys :P [/url]

Thanks for the info! I went and listened to a sample and think it's really good. Sounds a little like ELO to me. I can only imagine how much better the 12 inch must be. Definitely keeping an eye out for this one. Thanks for making me aware of it.

I was definitely surprised about the connection when Vince of Executive Suite mentioned it. You are right about saying that Philly must have been one great place to be at that time. Vince explains that he met many of the key people including Daryll in the elevator or hallways of the theatre they all worked out of. they all just became friends and listened to each other's work. Everybody was wheeling and dealing and writing songs for each other if they liked you enough.

Must admit that I am learning and appreciating the Philly roots more than ever. Still have a lot to catch up on.

wow , How interesting this info dispels what a local Record Shop told me long ago. He maintained that “Executive Suite” was a different incarnation of the “Trammps”.

Hall & Oates released a lot of promos of their work; I just found a forgotten (by me) LP recorded at the Apollo with Eddie Kendriks and David Ruffin.

While Baker, Harris and Young along with Bunny Sigler wrote and produced "When the Fuel...", they were not part of the actual group. The interview should go up in about a week with the names of all the band members.

Yes. There's no doubting Darryl Hall's soul and R&B pedigree...Unlike George Michael who jumps on the Black music bandwagon only to prop up his flagging career.

Not that I'm defending Michael's 'anus' crimes against music in general (though there have been far worse culprits) but his first hits were pop pastiches of funk/rap.

I liked some of Hall & Oates's hit material, never having ventured into left-field with them. Sat through a mate's MFL edition of the world's most common LP, 'Abandoned Lucheonette', a few weeks back - I'd never actually heard the whole LP before, but some of the music on there was pretty nice.

Anyone recall Hall's intense mid-'80s hit, 'Dreamtime'? I think he 'came out' around that period, also.

Uh, Forrrce...what are you saying here? Hall came out??? as in "of the closet"??? I never heard that. I thought he was hetero. My ex said once when working at Aloha that H&O's road manager came in and asked where he could score some drugs for the guys. I wasn't there--I know no more.

Maybe someone was just droppin' names.

As far as that 12" version of "Running From Paradise" goes--I listened to the LP & the 12" last night and they are almost the same....the beat has been accentuated on the 12" but no real remix was done; David Foster produced the RCA 12" & the LP cut. The 12" is actually about 8 seconds shorter than the Lp cut.

Also, I was playing this last night during Letterman and a new & improved Blondie made an appearance. Lotsa new young guys with Chris Stein and a seemingly face-lifted and slimmed down Debbie Harry. Song they sang was kinda good. I'm gonna do a new thread on this--cuz I see some interesting info needs to be desseminated.

I can remember reading a piece about Hall at this time, with him admitting he was gay. I don't have kinky dreams all that often :P . He may have been misquoted, or the words fabricated, but I definitely have seen an admission in print, sometime in the '80s.

Hmmm, hmmm... OK, now BACK TO THE TOPIC! :)

This is from H&A's entry in Da Capo's encyclopedia "Soul A-Z" (1995):

"Both Hall and Oates were raised in the Philadelphia subuubs. They met in 1967 at the Adelphi Ballroom (Note: I wrote "Ballroom", not "bathroom" fellas! :) ), leading their own gropus, Hall with the Temptones and Oates with the Masters; Hall had also recorded a single as a member of Kenny Gamble & the Romeos. (After a short stint with Oates in the group Gulliver) Hall started to do session work, singing backing vocals for groups like The Stylistics and the Delfonics".

Then they signed with Atlantic in 1972, Arif Mardin produced their first LP Whole Oats, and the rest is history.

Another thing: the record with Ruffin & Kendricks was not a promo, it was a widely released live album called Live at the Apollo with David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks. It was recorded during a May 1985 concert celebrating the reopening of the historic Apollo Theatre.

Finally got around to posting the interview I mentioned earlier with Vince Unto who was the lead vocalist for Executive Suite. They had a big hit in 1973 with "When the Fuel Runs Out." Vince talks about the Daryl Hall connection and more. Your thoughts and comments welcome as always.

    "X-Static" album & "Dreamtime"

The "X-Static" album was always one of my favorites of Daryl Hall and John Oates'. It was available recently on Buddah with bonus cut "No Brain No Pain" (quirky rock, not disco), which was the non-LP B side of "Wait For Me", one of my favorites of their singles. The followup "Who Said The World Was Fair" was not a pop hit, but as a disco song I like it even more than "Running From Paradise."
Yes I remember Daryl Hall's solo hit "Dreamtime" and video. I wonder why I don't see that album "Three Hearts In The Happy Ending Machine", another of his solo albums "Soul Alone" or Hall and Oates' "Voices" album in stores (anymore).

    Hi Usagi san

I think those albums are only abvailable in Japan. But they are all being remastered with bonus aditions. But as Hall & Oates have a huge discography, they go little by little.

DREAMTIME was available in CD. Mine is american. I am not sure if it is out-of-print. It span some nice 12 inches remixes... the best being ONLY A VISION.
