    Alicia Bridges and the Counterculture?

Here in university town there has been recurring speculation about Ms. Bridges' orientation. Students of pop culture analysis raise these points: She has a fierce, Drag-King-meets-Lipstick-Diva appearance; apart from "Nightlife" her songs are all Southern-fried honky-tonk or bar ballads; her songwriting/managing/singing partner is a woman; she sings of being a "Diamond In The Rough" on her first album and a socially rejected Tough Mama on her second; all her songs refer to lovers in gender-inspecific terms, with the exception of the sarcastic "maybe that'll make- huh- a man out of you" line-- which some are eager to read as a comment about lesbian promiscuity.

I wonder if any of the posters on this site can shed light on this topic?

They would be correct in their speculation. Alicia was/is a club DJ in Atlanta for many years. I lost touch with her in the late 80's and don't know if she is still spinning or not.

She has never made a secret about her orientation but I don't believe she said anything about it in print before 8 years ago or so.
