A little history about this segment for those who are interested.
December 31, 1982 River Club NYC
Grace Jones performed live at 5am and I played until 2 in the afternoon.
The one minute plus overlay from Pinocchio into “Could This Be Magic” was kind of a statment to setting up my “midnight moment”. Other DJ’s and club goers told me the thing they enjoyed most about that blend was the was the strings from Pinocchio answered Donna’s vocals. The turntables at the River Club were not suspended, it was a carpeted shelf mad of plywood and 2x4 that was directly connected to a banket where people danced regularly. That’s why at the beginning of “Could This Be Magic” you hear the record skip.
“Could This Be Magic” ends with a fade so I used a “tape slap” effect to create my own cold ending. I did the same with the next record, Barbara Streisand’s “The Way We Were” because I only wanted to use her singing the word “memories” while overlaying the biggest high energy record of that year “The Visitors” and simultaniously overlaying the sound of Big Ben striking 12. Also if you listen closely at the very end of “Could This Be Magic” you can faintly hear the crowd’s reaction come through the needle of the tonearm.
Also at the 26:45 mark of this audio clip there is an interesting signature style blend that lasts for 1m 16s from a Patrick Cowley tune into “Young Men Drive Fast” by The Quick.
Peace.
