Good new records shock

I'm not generally in the habit of buying or listening to much contemporary stuff but 2 recent CD purchases I must recommend to you people are 'The Truth volume 1' by Frank McComb (reminds me of 70s Stevie Wonder) & 'Waltz Of A Ghetto Fly' by Amp Fiddler (strange name but excellent slinky jazz/trip hop a bit in the Erykah Badu stylee). So forget your Dido crap & your Michael Buble retro tripe & check out those afore-mentioned slabs of class if you like your stuff a bit jazzy,moody & funky!

I have these 2 CD's and I agree they are both pretty good. The Frank M reminds me a bit of D'Angelo. It is produced by Steve Harvey (a Scottish guy) who had a couple of singles out here in the early 80's (Something Special was the best one, you probably remember it). He also produced a recent-ish CD by Donnie. This is a little inconsistant as a whole but has some very nice tracks on it - You Got A Friend is my fave. Again it's a bit of a Stevie rip off.

Another CD I enjoyed is the Reel People album, that came out a few months back. This has some mellow soulful house on there mixed in with mid-tempo soul, which I thought was quite nice.

YES YES YES - Frank McCombs Album is the best thing to come out of the US during the last many years and a real fav of mine too.
McComb followers is higly advised to check out the obscure duet he did with gospel singer Daryl Coley in 1993 entitled "Your Future Is My Future". It's available on the "Meteor Man" Soundtrack (Motown, 1993) - The song is worth the entire price of the CD!

Just to add more info about Steve Harvey: he was also the producer behind UK artists Total Contrast and Steven Danté (his 1988 "Find Out" album)

Steve Harvey's debut from 1983, 'Something Special', was a big club record in the UK. It was also at the centre of a litigation episode with Prelude - Eric Matthew was accused of emulating it too closely for Sharon Redd's 'Love How You Feel'. Harvey released another single ('Tonight') then went on to write and produce for other artists. The last I heard of him, he was working with Bridgette McWilliams.

Steven Dante...forgot about him. Really liked his debut single, 'So Long'.

I saw Amp Fiddler live, a couple of months ago. Whole gig was a little bit Eryka Badu (snore)/Nu-Soul for me, but he and his band were very capable and he is a pretty talented guy. I found ogling his scantily-clad backing singers took away the minor irritants.

I remember the Sharon Redd case at the time. I think Eric Mathew came clean in an interview and said he really liked the Steve Harvey record and as it never did much in US, not even getting a domestic release, he ripped it off.

My fave Steve Harvey production is the first Impromt2 CD "You're gonna love it" on Mo Jazz. It is probably about 6/7 years old now, but still sounds great.

I Wonder if Steve Harvey is still involved with Impromp2?? I've heard a few tracks from their recently released set on Expansion and it's absolutely stunning stuff and I higly recommend it for all fans of Impromp2.

Harvey was just involved the first album. There is 3 CD's in all and the second/third were produced by the act themselves. They are still pretty hot, if not quite as consistant as their debut. I have the new one and there is a very nice Norman Whitfield style cut on there. Unfortunately I bought the US issue but I notice the Expansion version has extra some tracks, making it a better buy.

Much as I love Eric Matthew's stuff I found alot of it was highly derivative such as Sharon Redd's 'Got Ya Where I Want' ripping off a Sinnamon track (which I can't remember the title of) & 'Beat The Street' being highly influenced by D Trian's 'Youre The One For Me'. Nothing's original I s'pose but Eric was quite blatant at times. I always 'saw' him as New York's answer to Pete Waterman i.e.clever but not very subtle.

When I interviewed Steve D'Acquisto from Loose Joints, he told me that Eric Mathews had tried to rip off Is It All Over My Face. Steve had sung him the idea and then gone away and done it for West End. But a Gary's Gang tune came out called Let's Love Dance Tonight, which Steve claimed Eric based on the lyrics he'd sung to him.

BTW, Eric's not his real name. He's Italian-American, though the name escapes me now. Anyone know it?

Has anyone heard this new cut by N.E.R.D. called "She wants to move" they performed it last night on 'Dave" and previously on SNL, it is a throw back to the early 70's with a nice fusion of Rock, Soul and 'tribal' beat brake drums, I need to see if a single is available cause I like it!...
