I would say BBE - DISCO SPECTRUM vol. 1,2 and 3 , also BBE - DISCO HEAT Kenny Dope ,
BBE - DISCO FOREVER Dimitri from Paris ,
WEA (uk) - DISCO CONNECTION Various Artist ,
I love the selections of all songs ... and quality sounds too !

Don't know about the best, but my favourite is
UNCUT VOLUME 2: LET'S START THE DANCE Mercury 515 871-2

    1. LET'S START II DANCE AGAIN - HAMILTON BOHANNON & Dr. PERRI JOHNSON 7.35 (please note; this is billed as Let's Start The Dance on the CD....an amazing mistake, as this is the title of the CD).
    2. BURNIN' LOVE - CONFUNKSHUN 7.20
    3. SHE'S STRANGE - CAMEO 7.11
    4. FUNKY LIKE A TRAIN - THE EQUALS 5.54
    5. SEXOMATIC - BARKAYS 6.26
    6. DON'T STOP THE MUSIC - YARBOROUGH & PEROPLES 7.47
    7. LET THE MUSIC PLAY - CHARLES EARLAND 6.50
    8. WALKING ON SUNSHINE - ROCKER'S REVENGE 9.33
    9. HUMPIN' - GAP BAND 5.14
    10. FLASHLIGHT - PARLIAMENT 10.41

Not a filler there. The sound is good. Liner notes are interesting

What is the best compilation CD ever released?

I will divide this in two categories, unmixed and mixed.

    Unmixed:
1-The Disco Spectrum series, compiled by Joey Negro, by BBE
2-Disco Forever compiled by Dimitri from Paris, by BBE
    3-Disco Juice by Counterpoint Records
    4-Ghetto Discotheque by Stateside/EMI

    Mixed:
1-Live At Paradise Garage, mixed by Larry Levan , by Strut
2-Grass Roots, mixed by Danny Krivitt , by Strut
3-Studio 54, mixed by Kenny Carpenter
4-My Salsoul, mixed by Dimitri From Paris

Special mentions to the Loft and Azuli´s Choices series, wich aren´t strictly Disco, but contain a lot of gems, wich sometimes are hard to find. :)

Yup, Dimitris "disco Forever" set is definetely up there with the best of them.
Also worth considering (if you can still find it ) is the "Solar Box Set" released in 1988 to mark Solar records 10 year anniversary.
    There was life after disco!!

CDs were created for stuff that's real hard to come by on vinyl and here's the best of the lot: ESPRESSO ESPRESSO, complied by the great Karminsky Brothers. Percussive protodisco, smooth bossa grooves, psychedelic latin dance workouts, no fillers, every track a masterpiece. It's like one moment you lay on a tropical beach all relaxed and warm with someone special who's got the softest skin, and the next you dance wildly under dazzling mirrorballs - this cd is a celebration of all the good things in life. You get the long version of Astrud Gilberto's BEGINNINGS, probably one of the coolest dance records ever, and Berry Lipman's wonderful GIRLS FROM PARAMARIBO, very different from Astrud, very Ritchie Family. Serge Gainsbourg is there too. Even the packaging of the cd is priceless. Better buy 2 in case the first one gets scratched.

RU: I don't think the CD is available anymore. I was lucky enough to pick up a copy second hand, so you never know.

Of course the GREATEST CD compilation ever would have to be:

ABSOLUTELY: THE VERY BEST OF PRELUDE RECORDS if only I could find a copy.

An American compilation CD called 'Best of Eurodisco' on Rebound records is one CD that's been played to death since I bought it 6 years ago in Florida. It's definitely a significant factor in my 'rediscovery' of the Eurodisco sound that I loved so much in the late 70s. It features such gems as Alec C's 'Romeo & Juliet' (well-edited to a manageable 6.5 minutes), Voyage's brilliant 'Souvenirs' & Arpeggio's 'Love & Desire' (both full length). You rarely find Eurodisco on UK compilations as tastes in this country seem to lean more to the funkier end of the spectrum, so I was really pleased to get these tracks on CD instead of the usual vinyl which tends to be worse value & the quality can be iffy.(although you are guaranteed the original length of tracks with original vinyl of course.)

Another very good CD comp.is another that I bought in the good ol' U.S. called 'Smokin Disco' which is the best of Fantasy records late 70s disco output such as Sylvester, Slick, Paradise Express & Fever.(all full length versions).
    ...ya gotta beat the street......

I have that compilation Quinny, along with the Solar 1 & 2, Disco, and Electro boxed sets in the same "Absolutely..." series. But I think there's room for improvement 'cos there are only 3 CDs. An 8 CD Prelude boxed set would be something else...

Discodisk: A few months ago you mentioned a compilation that had the Philly Devotions on it and I neglected to get it. Could you share that name again, please?
    Thanks,

You also have SUPERVIXENS MOOD MOSAIC VOL.5 - Partners in crime (Italy) 1997 ,
This compilation is just fantastic if you like more rare grooves , it features : Get on up - ROUNDTREE
    Ease your mind - TOUCHDOWN
Dance dance dance - MARTA ACUNA
    Follow me - BLACK DEVIL
Ma mo ah - TONY VALOR SOUND ORCHESTRA
    Do me - MONA RAE
and a couple others .... great and fantastic selection,
The only thing sound quality is similar to UNIDISC release , some of the trax could be better in terms of sound transfer... but you get a great choice of music...RU :P !

I think they were 8.99, DiscoDisk - fabulous value. I cannot remember where I bought mine. I didn't buy them all at the same time. I guess it would have been somewhere in Swindon (HMV or Virgin) or maybe, like you, Manchester, on one of my trips up there. I actually had a similar experience to you in Manchester's HMV several years ago, when I saw a volume of the "Rare Prelude" series of CDs that I didn't have. I made a mental note to buy it before I left, and completely forgot.

Well I go for the Disco-Spectrum series from Joey Negro and all the compilations from Dimitri From Paris because there are some rare tracks on them.

But I also recommend DJ Spinna's "Strange games and things" which is simply GREAT (1 mixed and 2 unmixed).

And as for vintage but well-known disco The "Casablanca-box" is always in the neighbourhood!

Wasn't there a massive disco compilation produced that had drawings of girls on each of the CD's?

    RU,

thanks to your advise, i picked up this 3cd set last week -- it is superb, exactly as you said it would be.

It is nice to get cds where I don't know 90% of the songs and like it (pretty much all of it) from the very first play. :D the complimentary mix cd is not bad either.

    Once again, thanks !
