Dudes, this question is boring me for years.

Who plays the drums in Barry White's (Love Unlimited Orchestra) early records(1973/74)????

I love the way it sounds and plays. It's magic drums, what a skill!! I consider him one of the best disco drummer in the world among Earl Young and Tony Thompsom.
My suspect: Ed Greene, but I'm not sure.

    Anybody knows?

This is a good question. According to an article written on the occassion of the release of "The Best Of The Love Unlimited Orchestra" CD (Funk Essentials series from the UK), Barry drummed himself in the late 60's for an artist called Jackie Lee while on tour.

With regards to his early releases, I think the answer might well be that it would have been some studio/session drummer. I have checked all my early BW/Love Unl/Love Unl Orch albums and none have credits other than for BW, his wife Glodean and Larry Nunes as spiritual advisor.

Perhaps the best source is his auto biography, which you can buy on Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...rniesdiscomusi

In the same article I referred to above, the way Barry worked was described as follows:

"He planned his orchestra work with care - nothing but professional players, full string complements of violins, violas and cellos, and totally live recordings with all the musicians crammed into the studio. No overdubs for the maestro."

What else can I say. He is indeed the one and only maestro!

Thanx Maarten, we have a big mistery in here, isn't? I was check my albuns too for years and I suspect of Ed Greene because he is the drummer on the Gene Page's HOT CITY album (1974/75). This album is produced by Barry White and is very similar to Love Unlimited Orch. (BTW)It also contains a interesting version of "Satin Soul".

    Peace,

I found it!!!! I checked Barry's bio on
allmusic and, that's it, ED GREENE was the Love Unlimited drummer!! My suspect was right. I was checked his bio in allmusic already in the past, they must be updated after my last visit.

    Thanx anyway maarten.

Hey Blaxman - sorry for the late reply. And well done solving the mystery. But Gene Page did an album produced by Barry White? See, I learn something here almost every day.

I have got to find that album. Thanks much!

The Drummer was a Studio Favorite ... Alvin Taylor - At that time, he was the top notch, tripple scale drummer, Awesome, timing, he literally set the tone for much of Barry's stuff.

Maaten, discrenpancy here ... Ed Greene may have played on some of the earlier stuff ... but factual that ALVIN TAYLOR, studio legend drummer filled the gap on many of the studio gigs.

    Hi guys:

Me too. By the way, the thread author last post was in January 2nd, 2004. Maybe he doesn't even access the forum.
