WBLS, 107.5, with Frankie Crocker, was always hot... before, during and after disco.
what was the best disco station of that time? i am only familiar with the new york stations. 99X played some disco along with top 40. Disco "102", Disco 92 (92 KTU), WABC also had a disco format for a short time.

Kiss 108 with Sunny Joe White in Boston :D
Finally, someone else here who knows Sonny Joe White :DOriginally Written by DiscoMan

Sunny Joe was the greatest DJ to EVER burn up the Boston airwaves!
I was brokenhearted when he died.
RIP Sunny Joe White :D
In Philly, WCAU-FM 98.1, main DJ Bob Pantano
In Miami some time around ‘76 (maybe earlier?) a new company applied for a license and new frequency assignment from the FCC, (I believe is HOT 105 now), apparently in order to qualify the applicant station is required a certain amount of ‘Air Time’ experience, ( this is the way I remember but not 100 % sure) well, they decided to play nothing but Club music (before it was coined DISCO) for months without any commercials or talking Djs, this stations was all the rage around town, I remember Beach parties with all radios tuned to this station and babes dancing all over in the sand , for the first time many youngsters were exposed to what we called at the time ‘underground’ club music that was not very popular or played in any other stations, unfortunately after they got their license they changed formats and the rest is history……….
Do you remember when he died DiscoMan?Originally Written by DiscoMan

JoJo Kincaid and Sunny Joe White right from the HEART OF DISCO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sunny Joe was found dead in his apartment in Framingham, MA in September of 1996. He was 42 years old.
I remember the day quite clearly.
The link to the radio broadcasts I posted also included JoJo Kincaid.
I remember him too. Sunny Joe and JoJo made Boston one of the country's top radio markets!
In Washington, DC it was WKYS, 93.9, KISS. Best DJ was Candy.
Sonny Joe White on KISS 108 was also joined by other DJ's that were very good. Bostonians should also not forget WBOS which I think was a little before KISS 108. KISS 108 if I remember had the highest ratings of any radio station for a while. This just gives a hint that disco was more popular than some people of the time would want to admit to.
The mixing technique on these two stations was part of what ignited the whole craze. The mixing wasn't just perfect it was ingeniously creative.
Those were the days!
Remember WBOS as well. Listened primarily to KISS 108 because of Sunny Joe White. Listening to Sunny Joe was as entertaining as the music he spun.
Lived in Worcester then and Worcester radio wasn't that good (WSRS and WAAF) 'AAF was a good rock station but I don't remember them playing DISCO (I wass listening to KISS 108...).
Clubs in Worcster -BJ's Disco on Grafton St. but we all headed to Rte 9 and the Disco clubs in Framingham. Timothy's II and the Disco club at the Chateau DeVille
(forgot the name, help me out someone!?).
Never made it to Boston, Boston :( too expensive for me :(
Yes I remember WBOS. They were a nice alternative at the other end of the FM band, though I think KISS was better.
So you lived in Woosta DiscoMan :D
I used to date a girl that lived in Framingham I think she took me to the club you are reffering to way back when. I don't remember the name either.
Too bad you didn't get a chance to go to Boston Boston. They had thee best sound system. Di you ever go to Cache's in Boston?
Find them and destroy them!
Never made it to any of the Boston clubs. Had friends who went to Boston, Boston quite a bit. Always wanted to go but never made it. The Disco club at the Chateau DeVille was huge and had a kick ass sound system. Timothy's Too was much smaller but very nice. I think the hottest women I ever saw clubbing went to Timothy's Too :D
I was gonna go with a girl from Framingham. Debbie was her name. Someone was there before me and I got one hell of a surprise if you know what I mean :P
Had to be WBLS in NYC. And Frankie Crocker was awesome.
WBLS was incredible and I remember this was the only station you could hear the likes of the Jimmy Castor Bunch....P-O-T-E-N-T-I-A-L!
And wasn't is Crocker that would sign off with King Pleasure's Moody's Mood for Love? (You can blow now if you want to, I'm through)
And an honorable mention to Paco from WKTU...just to hear him say "baby"! LOL
Actually the guest mixes were always good on KTU as you were getting ready to go "clubbing" on Friday and Saturday nights! =]
I figured I would post the link to Frankie Crocker's sign off song. :icon_cool:

yes Sunny Joe, was very good and loved his music. It was shame he died so you.
Let us not forget Disco Vinnie Peruzzi who was also at Kiss for quite some time who has also left us.
Before I moved to Boston, I lived in Pittsburgh. WAMO was the closet we had to a Dance station though it played primarily R&B. One of my friends, Rick Janikowski used to host a radio show on the public radio station called "Disco to Go" on Fridays.
It was definitely WBLS for me, up to '79.
They did the late-night Disco-mixers, where I'd hear the newest promo stuff. I used to have have a reel-to-reel of a midnight-to-3am continuous mix, from summer of '77, where they played Donna Summer's "Je Taime...", from the original 12"! (It was the first time I'd heard it, prior to the Casablanca Promoter showing-up at our club. And I freaked when I heard new Donna!!!:icon_eek::icon_mrgreen:)
Then there was the opening sax solo from Phyllis Hyman's "No One Can Love You More", with those 3 magic words... "This is Roscoe"
But, by '79, when WKTU exploded! WBLS went back to a more R&B format, instead of competing with All-Disco, All-The-Time.
So... For WKTU I gotta give props to Mary Thomas. She was my girl!!!

For me it was definitely Disco 92 WKTU first, but the 98.7 KISS Mastermixxes were awesome! Shep Pettibone represented big time. 107.5 WBLS was different, they played a mix of Disco, Jazz, Salsa and R&B and blended it all in like a tossed salad!
I remember about two great disco stations in 1979 San Francisco, but I don't remember what they were, can anybody help me out with that?
I'll have to go with WKTU too, they were DISCO, period. 24-7 special mixes, commercial free blocks, everything! And when they stopped, there was 98.7Kiss(which I still listen to today) the Mastermixes, Shep Pettibone, Tony Humphries, the Friday Night and Saturday Night Dance Party mixes, WBLS was always the alternate when you couldn't find anything good on the other 2 stations, you could head down the dial and hear Niem Johnson, Timmy Regisford, and the like on their version of the late night dance parties. (I have quite a few cassette tapes of these mid 80's shows, Tony, Timmy, Niem, Mr. Magic, Red Alert, etc, one day i'll get around to transferring them to mp3, though there are a lot of them available on sites like Deephousepage.com already.) I miss those days of happy music, and the days of radio playlist variety. There was a time when you could hear George Benson, Hall & Oates, Skyy, Pat Benatar, Cerrone, Blue Magic all in the same hour on the same station!
I'll probably never get that good again
Thank God I have my own turntables & 12 inches!:icon_biggrin:
