Late Classic / Early Elctro / Alternative like VITERITTI

    Hi Folks.
I am searching for disco tracks around 1982-1984.
Not classical disco anymore, but still not proper 80s synthie pop.

Like Rhetta Hughes - Angel man
    Pete Shelley stuff
    Berlin - Sex
    Devo - Thats Good

Like Bobby Viteritti 1983 Trocadero set on 5am ago website.
Synthesizer produced sexy alternative sounding disco.
    Gimme TITLES !!!!!!!

Nancy Martin's 'Can't Believe' (1982) is a very catchy Euro-style number with an almost robotic feel. I highly recommend it - and I know Bernie has a thing for it too.

It's been gone from the site for a while now (think over a year). The link was there but hasnt worked since right around July of 2002. I do have a copy round here somewhere though (hehe..the miracle of hookin your CD recorder into your computer tower  ) Heres some tracks of that liking I suggest (including a few that were in that spin excerpt):

The Quick - Young Men Drive Fast
    Pete Shelley - Telephone Operator
    Devo - Pitty You
    Material - Bustin' Out
New Musik - While You Wait
Robert Palmer - Johnny And Mary
Taco - Living In My Dreamworld
    Ryan Paris - Dolce Vita
    Falco - Einzelhalft

Some of my fave late disco morning stuff

Just an observation, so don't get upset. I'm really trying to understand more about this.

Jimmy's list above would suggest that the guy was getting somewhat desperate, sorry, disparate and adds further to my incomprehension of what Morning Music was. Wasn't it just the junk and the newies he couldn't play any other time? Wasn't it somewhat forced upon him by his refusal to play any record twice in an evening and 'cos he had to play so damned long?

LOL LOL...interesting concept on 5am stuff but no, morning music was a certain feel and there are several sides to morning music. Alot of it was everything from sleeze eurodisco to new wave dance to hard r&b/jazz and even soul. I guarentee you like alot of morning music Quinny and you dont even know it

OK, anal-retentive pack rat that I am, I found the track list for the 1983 Viteritti "Hot To Troc" party that was once available at the 5am site.

The set begins with Margaret Reynolds doing "Keep On Holding On" live...then

    "Sex...I'm A" - Berlin
"Young Men Drive Fast" - The Quick
Telephone Operator" - Pete Shelley (the B-side of the Arista 12" (12:42) is titled "Many A Telephone Operator")
    "Magnifique" - Magnifique
"Get The Balance Right" - Depeche Mode
    "The End" - Change
"Can We Try Again" - Technique
""Keep On Making Me High"- Unyque (Bobby mixes in some Bette Midler who says ""How ya doin' girls--long time-no see") in the middle of this.

If I remember correctly, this was Bobby's first return to Trocadero & SF after leaving for LA...Keefe & I were both there...)

    "Angel Man" - Rhetta Hughes
    "Beyond The Clouds" - Quartz
"Open Your Heart" - Human League in some long mix with Amanda Lear's "Follow Me"--mostly instrumental---the vocal finally comes much later)
    "Nowhere Girl" - B-Movie
    "That's Good" - Devo
    "Communication" - Spandau Ballet

    That was it, I think.

Check out the Heaven 17 stuff: "Play To Win", "Penthouse & Pavement", "Let Me Go" etc. for more stuff in this vein.

I'll post some more titles later. This was MY ERA. I worked in a record store in SF and danced at Trocadero.

BTW, this was NOT a "Morning Music" set...this was peaktime HIGH ENERGY.
    "Lost inside adorable illusion...."

They played quite a lot of British stuff there didn't they. I quite like Heaven 17 & Depeche Mode but surely there was much better Euro/Hi-Nrg stuff for dancing to around at that time?!

Marky: Thanks for putting the record straight. Can you (Jimmy) see why I've been particularly confused about the trtacks listed in this thread on Morning Music?

Thank the powers that be! I was getting confused myself if this was to be considered a "Sleaze" set. Whew! :)

That track list I posted wasn't really the best part of that evening, as I recall. It was the first time I'd heard the 12" mix of Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Something" at Troc and the crowd went wild. Bobby was trying to please two disparate camps--the traditional old-school Troc pretty-music lovers ("Midney/Costandinos etc.") and those who wanted the harder edged rock sound that had taken over. Bobby tried to please both segments of his audience--witness "Magnifique" wedged kinda uncomfortably between Pete Shelley & Depeche Mode!!!!. But, ultimately it was a night where the current sound (new wavish rock) was the winner. The old-school queens complained at Aloha the next day. Those tired old things!!! I myself LOVED IT!!!!! :D

I do recall having a great time dancing to stuff like Blondie's "Heart Of Glass" (the 1979 harbinger of all that was now the current rage) and really getting into the sleaze of Stevie Nicks' "Stand Back" with Miss Karen from Aloha.

Memories.... like the corners of my twisted mind....

    communication breakdown-spandau ballet

you mean "communication" let me down, and i'm left here.
sorry i'm a hard core spandau fan.
    DISCO

The word evokes not just a type of music or a kind of dance or even a style of dress.It\'s also a new social order of black and white, gay and straight, rich and poor, all hot, sweaty and, most likely, high, together.

Conflicts like this was one reason I appreciated The 'sleazy-ole' Anvil. Each of us dj's drew his own crowd for his own nights and didn't have to deal with this unless you were covering another jock. Me being with the "Midney/Costandinos" set really did not enjoy playing Blondie, Depeche Mode, etc. Thankfully I didn't have to.

This mix --- never in a million years. I feel his pain (and the crowd's) trying to work like this.

Nicky: There was nothing worse than a disparate crowd.

I will never (never say never, eh?) understand the Morning Music thing. In my honest, brutal way of assessing things, I reckon what started out as a joke (or at least an attempt to politely tell everyone that the DJ's had enough, and could you please GO HOME) back-fired. Let's face it, there is a time beyond which any party, no matter how good, gets rather jaded. Morning Music was the stuff that was played after the party was over, for the dregs (used in the nicest possible way) who wouldn't do the decent thing and get their asses home. Hence, the wild mixture of styles and tempos (classical music in a disco, for f***'s sake, pretentious, dumb, piss take or what!). The guy was trying really hard to loose the floor!!! Then, to his surprise, shock, horror, the whole bag o' beans took on a life of its own and became the raison d'etre for many a punter to be there. Et voila, Morning Music was born.

At last, someone writes something vaguely sensible about the scene!! :o  :o  :o  :o

I find it so interesting that someone who doesn't have a clue what morning music is, can make such a statement.
