What a difference a gay makes

G'day. I have my first set coming up as a dj and I'm going to be playing disco (duh). Can anyone tell me if there is anything disco that is openly gay or has a gay theme other than the village people and sylvester ? i am trying to broadly cover the spectrum (disco funk, instrumentals, political, etc) and I don't wanna play the usual YMCA etc etc. Any suggestions??? PS Nick Nack if u r reading this, I hope u don't think I'm pigeon holing music I just want to know if there is any gay themed music that can be enjoyed by a diverse crowd.

I think there was a thread which referred to gay records a few months ago, but I can't remember the actual topic.

    Here's a couple, anyway:

Valentino/Carl Bean 'I Was Born This Way'
    South Shore Commission 'Free Man'

Homosexuality by Modern Rocketry would probably fit the bill, as would Walk The Night by Skatt Bros

You really don't get much gayer than 'Cruisin The Streets' by Boystown Gang from '81; I'm not sure about playing the climactic bit where the gay guy, the cop & the hooker fake orgasms (I'm assuming they faked them! :o ) to a mixed audience unless they're an open-minded crowd!

    Dennis Parker: Like An Eagle

A thinly-veiled song about cruising. Dennis Parker was better known as porn star Wade Nichols. The song and album were produced by Jacques Morali of Village People/Ritchie Family fame.

I cannot get into this song. He should have stayed in porno.

I like it. i think its got an eerie, haunting atmosphere that conveys the predatory nature & sexual tension present whilst cruising in dark, rough places. :-? (Excuse me, I'll have to go for a lie down now!)

Totally different context here. Don't worry about me --- go for it! :D

I'd be more concerned about the guy using the 'C' word when referring to the hooker. Always found that in really bad taste and not something I'd want to hear on the dancefloor... gay, straight or in-between.

Here's some music choices --- post the accepted 'disco' era:

ME'SHELL NDEG EOCELLO - LEVITICUS: FAGGOT
THE COMING OUT CREW - FREE, GAY & HAPPY
PAUL PARKER - IN MY WILDEST DREAM
FEM 2 FEM - SWITCH (Fem in the streets, b-b-b-b butch in the sheets :P )
COMPANY B - FASCINATED (Still love this 80's number. All about that 'Love Toy' :) )
    JOHNNA - PRIDE
    RUPAUL - SNAPSHOT; SHADE SHADY
BASE CULTURE feat. GINA G. - LOVE THE LIFE
4-2 THE FLOOR - WATCHING U, WATCHING ME
DIANA KING - I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER (One of the better things out of "My Best Friend's Wedding" )
MAN 2 MAN - MALE STRIPPER; AT THE GYM
DEKKO - I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU; I'LL BE YOUR MAN
    BARBARA MASON - ANOTHER MAN
DEMANN - I'LL BE YOUR MAN (Same as Dekko - lower nrg)
EARTHA KITT - I LOVE MEN; THIS IS MY LIFE
GLORIA GAYNOR - I AM WHAT I AM

Believe it or not, there is a CD out there with a title which is something like "Homo Top 100" that I once saw on a website.

'The Best of Record Shack Records' would be a good start.
There's also a 'Gay Anthems' series.

I completely agree. The 12" mix is particularly good. I don't care for the rest of the album though.

And yeah, he's not the greatest singer, but we've all heard much worse, haven't we?

From the 90s there was the remixes of When A Man Loves A Woman by Jody Watley, with the alternate lyrics of When a Man Loves A Man and When A Woman Loves A Woman, I always loved the way the lyrics are cut to be appropriate.

If we're going to go post-disco, I don't think it's possible to get any gayer than Sin With Sebastian's "Shut Up And Sleep With Me". While not explicit like "Cruising The Streets", SUASWM is right off the scale for gayness. I still can't listen to it with a straight face (pun not intended... honest).

Sin With Sebastian makes Sylvester look butch.
