    Artists A.K.A

Was there alot of "Disco" Bands/ Artists who changed their name over the years eg. KOOL AND THE GANG (initially as "Kool and the Flames", and before that (since 1964) as the "Jazziacs"),

    Cheers

Firs that comes to mind is the THP Orchestra who later dropped the Orchestra part. Pam Todd and the Gold Bullion Band also went under Pam Todd & Love Exchange

With all the record entries I've done in the Vault, I saw others, but I've lost brain cells and can't think of them.

Here I was for the last two decades thinking S.O.S. stood for Sounds of Success.

For the last, it should be Andrea True.

I still beleive S.O.S stands for sounds of succes. At least they yell out that phrase on their "Crossfire" track from their 1989 "Diamonds in The Raw" album which BTW is one of the best New Jack Swing sets ever made! (even if nobody seemed to notice it.....guess it got lost in the whole Guy/kieth Sweat/teddy Riley thing)

I'm sure that Kleeer & Universal Robot Band were different bands. Kleeer's 1st LP was in 1979 & U.R.B.were still going in the 80s. Maybe they just shared musicians?

just my 2 cents (as I'm not that much into the technicalities usually).

Rhythm Makers (Zone) became G,Q. (Disco Nights)

Is there any connection between these two bands? I've never thought of that. Kleeer had Woody Cunningham as a lead singer and U.R.B was mainly a Leroy Burgess project I think. I actually think Kleeer lasted longer throughout the 80s than U.R.B. I know of a 1987 kleeer release ("Power") and didn't Leroy Burgess move on to do the stuff with Aleem way earlier than that?

I'm not aware of a connection between the 2 but occasio earlier in the thread said they were the same band which I very much doubt.

Universal Robot Band was an Adams/Carmichael project. Woody Cunningham & Norman Durham were with the URB, pre-Kleeer. Burgess was just a guest vocalist for 'Barely Breaking Even', in 1982 - and not 1984 as is commonly reported. Incidentally, it proved to be their swansong.

The Universal Robot Band catalogue is a pretty small one -

    1976 - 'Dance & Shake Your Tamborine' LP & 12"
1978 - 'Freak In The Light Of The Moon' LP & 12"
    1980 - 'Let's Get This Thing Together' 12"
1980 - 'Don't Let This Rainbow Pass Me By', w/Cloud One
    1982 - 'Barely Breaking Even'

There is no way that S.O.S. stands for Sounds of The South... because they talk about it in their debut LP.

Forrrce! Thank you for getting this straight.
Sorry for the inaccurate description, I knew it wasn´t the
full line-up of URB which would become Kleeer but didn´t tell. Better wording next time.

al hudson cut a record [possibly his first] for a tiny detroit label called amazing- 'just fun' with an instrumental flip 'wait for me' with the soul partners credited as the brown bombers i first heard this as a youth, finally found one in 1980 for $25,got talked into selling it in 1994 for $100 [even though i knew it was **** rare& i loved it!] last saw a bashed up scratched copy in martin koppels toronto auction in 2000 with a minimum bid of $800

    Hi everyone!

I don't have much knowledge when it comes to the pseudonym/birth names however all I can think of is:

The Moments - Ray, Goodman & Brown
New Edition - Bell, Biv Devoe

Let's not forget the most "infamous" name change of all - Prince to symbol $,&,*,?,@,^,#........

    Curtis Mayfield's group??????

    Flaming Ember - Flaming Emeralds

Are you sure? The Flaming Ember was known as Flaming Embers at first on the Ric-Tic label, then dropped the 's' when signed to Hot Wax...later they became Mind, Body and Soul, same as one of their songs on Hot Wax....Flaming Ember was an all white group with a soulful sound while the Flaming Emeralds had black members I think...Westbound No.9 by the Flaming Ember is one of my all 10 favorites, and I'm absolutely sure it would have been a floor-filler in the late 70s if Tom had remixed it and included a genuine break....
