2 Questions, Salsoul Orch & Viola Wills

I was just listening to the white party from the saint in 83 and heard a version of "Magic Bird Of Fire" with a longer section of about 30-40 secs not on the 12'' or LP. What was this? Promo only 12? And, heard an instrumental dub mix of Viola Wills "Climb Every Mountain" medley..didnt know there was a 12'' for this, whats the info on that? If anyone can help let me know.
    Thanx,
    DJ Jimmy M

    White Party 1983

    Jimmy,
I am the DJ from the Saint's White Party 1983 - and many others... most recently 2003.
The version of Magic Bird Of Fire is from an '80s Salsoul re-issue which is slightly different from the original. The song Climb Every Mountain as covered by Viola Wills is an unreleased track. This song is available on my series, Rarities & Lost Volume I. Please visit the TAPE CLUB pages at www.robbieleslie.com for ordering information on this and many other music sets. And don't forget to add your name to my mailing list.

    Magic Bird of Fire

    Hi Jimmy,
If I remember correct there is a wild remix of Magic Bird of Fire on Walter Gibbons Disco Madness LP - it could be that one.

Thanks for the info Robbie! Good to see your posting on the DM forum :) Bobby had told me alot of fond memories he has of you guys when we used to talk alot. Since I see your here I may as well ask you a song ID question here rather than post in the other forum LOL. On white party, whats that track you play right before Suzi Lane "Harmony" that sounds identical to Cerrone's "Call Me Tonight" that has the simmaler lyrics "call me.."? Figure I'll ask the sorce straight I'll check out your ordering page too.

    Thanks,
    Jimmy

    Call Me Tonight sound-alike

Good morning and Happy Valentine's Day!
I'm sorry, I have no idea what song it is you're trying to ID. My only suggestion is that you burn the song in question and mail it to me. E-mail me at robbie@robbieleslie.com
for my mailing address. It's alot to do for a song title, admittedly...

Jimmy, can you tell us exactly where the song is? (segments 1-13).

Perhaps someone can identify it that way.

I have a few more that I need identified and I will be posting those in the song ID section later.

Btw, I really like those real oldies like "We're On The Right Track" that are featured on segment 13.

    Mystery Solved!

OK, the lyrics gave it away...
    "The Fun Cry"
I do not recall the artist, but it was a Malligator Records import 12" from about 1979/1980 and it was the B-side.
So... there you go! Start hunting for it!

The Artist is Cerrone. When I read the first post in this thread I was almost certain that was the song that was in question. I always hated this record only because it's such a blatant ripp off of Call Me Tonight.

It is available on the Hot Productions CD Kongas/Africanism.

    Hello all, hey Robbie!
Thanks for the Disco Madness reminder! :P I revisited my Disco Madness lp\12"s they are like dub remixed versions and sound more like music today. What a gem! I remember playing the magic bird of fire and loved it's mysterious sound. It is different and much longer that the 12" not sure if that's the one Robbie used? The other songs were great too. I will check and aim to post the track listings. It appears to be an album? although the copies I have contain two 12" in one album cover. Just like other Salsoul and prelude promos of the day. I imagine the for sale copy was one album? My memory says Loletta H., Double Exposure Ten percent (although I did not care for this version) More info to follow.... I wish I had the opportunity to have experienced the Saint and the parties :(

No the artist is Cerrone. Cerrone was the artist behind Kongas.

I did own the 12" single at some point, but can't remember what the A side was.

I know all their is to know of Cerrone's aliases so this I knew... and know very well Kongas is a group Cerrone was with and produced but the artist is not Cerrone on the label. Anyhow thanks very much for the info cause I found it listed on the Kongas LP like you said (last song)..but the artist name on the label is Kongas, not Cerrone. Just like Love And Kisses is Love And Kisses and not Alec Costandinos as released on label and info

I am not entirely sure, but I do believe the single listed the artist as Cerrone. Again, not entirely sure. Maybe Nicky or Robbie can clarify this if they read it.

I won't be any help on this one. Never heard this and I know I don't own it. Sorry.

"The Fun Cry" was on one of Bobby V's tapes--I was told by Keefe & Barry Walters that the artist was Kongas. It does sound exactly like "Call Me Tonight".

Just found my copy of the record wit the "Fun Cry" on it. It is by Kongas on the Maligator label (#8168) and is the B side to a cover of "Why Can't We Live Together." Credits Cerrone as the producer. I wrote the date when I bought it on the sleeve: Oct, 1982.

hi guys, busy here in the office but...

Kongas 'The Fun Cry' from 'Africanism' Malligator 1978 reissued on cd by Hot Productions

Cerrone 'Call Me Tonight' from 'Angelina' Malligator 1979 reissued on cd by Unidisc and Universal France

Cerrone obviously reworked 'The Fun Cry' for his own (fifth) album most likely due to a lack of inspiration as its the best track on an otherwise lacklustre LP. Love the Kongas album !

    ok, back to work..!
