    A Funkiest Groove Done by

    A FEMALE

I don't think this has been discussed in our forums....

Off the top of my head

    Aretha Franklin - Rock Steady
This track still sizzles on the turntable to this day! The bass on this song is still top shelf.

Lyn Collins - Think (About It)
One of the funkiest jams my cousin turned me on to back in the day! funk funk funkiest... :D

Wanna hear from you all... :D

    Yeah ...
the two songs you mentioned are totally awesome, agreed .....100%

When i think of female funk there´s one song on position #1:
Yvonee Fair´s "Funky music sho-nuff turns me on" ....bangbang, what a great Whitfield classic!
next would be the same song sung by Patti Labelle, and then of course..." I believe in Miracles" by the Jackson sisters.

    Cheers dude

Yup, Lynn Collins is Miss Funk indeed! :)
"Think (About It)" is definetely on my list too, but I still think "Rock Me Again (x6)" is even more funky (if possible).

I used to really like Jean Knight's Mr. Big Stuff and Natalie Cole's Sophisticated Lady.
Does Chaka Khan qualify with I Feel For You? Despite it being a giant hit and playing it countless times, I used to love that piece of vinyl.

EFunk: And there's probably more (I just can't remember them, argh!).
The really funny thing is that Chaka Khan (& Rufus) were like a secret weapon for us DJs back then. They were a band that everyone, but everyone, thought was going to break really big one day, but they never seemed to fully realise their potential or the faith invested in them by everyone. Another reason why 'I Feel For You' was sooooo welcomed by me, was the fact that it delivered on that earlier promise. At last, here was Chaka Khan with a real, bona fide, A1 blockbuster. The relief was tangible.

Big Up for Carla Thomas and her role alongside Otis Redding in Tramp. What a great promotional film to go with it, too.

Quinny, I was also very excited to see the next Rufus release in the stores... I had bought Rags To Rufus only to be disappointed that their LP wasn't as powerful as Ohio Players LP was.... I think I was being selfish... and wanted funk hit after funk hit.. as each LP was being released. I did buy the self titled pink LP.. only to be disappointed again. :x ... When Ask Rufus was released however... I became excited again!!! and I think that was their best LP effort. Side A every song... was special.

Ummm, I forgot all about Otis & Carla's
TRAMP I wonder if our friend K-Bee has heard this??

    K-bee,

in 1973 I bought TAKE ME JUST AS I AM another single by her. Not as powerful as her debut, but a likeable track.

    I forgot to mention

    2 POINTER SISTERS hits....

    YES WE CAN CAN
HOW LONG (BETCHA' GOT A CHICK ON THE SIDE)

Hey fellas! Don't forget that Lyn's "Think (about it)" was produced by Mr. James Brown himself.

Another funky vibe could be Evelyn King's "I'm in love". Don't know who was the producer on that one.

    E,
Please remind me to take a listen to that Lynn Collins track next time we have one of our funké conversations. Otherwise I'm bound to forget all about it . Was that one produced by James Brown too?

Yes K-Bee, this was a bonafide JB Production on PEOPLE RECORDS

It's not as bouncy as her signature hit... but when she sings the words... you know it's Lyn female preacher Collins. By the way I'll be on tonight... see you in the morning. :)

Hi There - I am new to this message board but I love funk music. This is a great topic. Frankly women are largely ignored when it comes to funk. I definitely rank "Rock Steady" and "Think (About It)" as two of the best funk songs, period. I would submit for your consideration - "The Anti-Love Song" by Betty Davis and "Which Way Is Up" by Stargard .

Kadossva! Welcome to the board... :D you definitely got the funk beat in ya brain. 8)

I have to get some Betty Davis jams real quick so that I can rank them amongst the songs that have been listed here on this thread.

Stargard's Which Way Is Up? is definitely a bonafied funk jam with a disco beat.

I like to mention a couple more funky females... Rufus (with Chaka Khan) on lead vocals breakout hit. Tell Me Something Good allthough kinda played out, still sounds good to my ears.

Another one to mention would either be Rose Stone or Cynthia Robinson from Sly & The Family Stone.

Although I'm not sure who did the vocals on Sing A Simple Song

I would at least credit her for doing a good job as co-lead on this track.

    Got to be real!

Hi, I think the funkiest groove by a female is 'Got to be real' by Cheryl Lynn, one of my all time favourites.

Lately I've been getting very much into the early 80s stuff by Donna Washington. Songs like "Scuze Me", "Guys like You" and "Going For The Glory" are just too good for words.
Unfortunately, I don't know much about her..

Barbara Lynn's 'You Make Me So Hot' is lowdown and kinda dirty.
