I know that this has been mentioned in the past on this site, but does anyone know if this book is being published today (as it was supposed to be) - I can't find a mention on Amazon and the page on the book site seems to not be available - does any one know,
Thanks
Nobby
Nobby,
It was last stated that it would be released this week... but it's already Thursday.
OK!!!!!
I just checked my e-mail and I got some good news for everyone interested...
They are shipping the Billboard's Hot Disco/Dance on January 27th... I wonder if I could hold my breath this time... :D
Amazon listing of all Joel Whitburn books
I just got an email also with a UPS tracking number. It is stated to arrive in my hot, sweaty little hands by 1/27. Can it be possible??
It's arrived. Well the UPS man just dropped off my Whitburn Disco/Dance book, so it has finally arrived.
I know what I will be doing during this NE snowstorm.
It's great to see the Dance/Disco genre finally documented. Yahoo !!

Why doesn't this book show up on Amazon? Is it 'officially' released yet or are you guys getting early copies?
Nick,
I got my UPS delivery today (January 27th) also.
I pre-ordered at the discounted rate.
The book is fabulous and gives great information about the artists and producers, even including in some cases their birthdates, hometowns, other bands, tragic deaths, alternative names, etc. And of course there is information about which songs were covers of previous songs, and remixes and re-releases that also charted.
It's interesting to see how few modern dance songs sustain a #1 ranking... most stay there only 1 or 2 weeks. It's like the songs are mostly disposable. The longest sustaining 1980s dance songs were in the 1980-1983 period and then it became very fragmented; take a look at the back of the book where the 1980s top tunes are listed. By the way, the 1970s all-time most sustained hit was BAD LUCK by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. It deserved it!
It's also interesting to see which songs were hits on the Dance chart but didn't register on the Pop chart. Jackie Moore's stellar THIS TIME BABY is a prime example of this. It was #1 Dance and not on the Hot 100 at all.
I didn't realize that recent disco songs like SEXUAL GUARANTEE by Macy Gray and YOU GIVE ME SOMETHING by Jamiroquai got into the top 10 of the Billboard Dance chart also! That adds to the ones I already knew about like CANNED HEAT by Jamiroquai and STRONG ENOUGH by Cher. So in 20 years when people want to know about disco classics, tell them about those songs too ;)
Nick, go to
www.recordresearch.com
that is the direct link to his website...
I got mine also today... it looks great... :)
Hello:
Is it my computer or even the Internet connection or the link to the Hot Dance/disco is broken?
I got a "Not Found" message.
Cheers,
RHessel
I got my book yesterday. These folks had a very difficult task here cause the early charts were not consistent. They chose to use Top 20 charts from Record World from early 1975 til mid 1976 when Billboard finally published a national chart. Thus many early records are given short shrift--actually NO MENTION AT ALL. A lot of wonderful titles surfaced on those record retailer charts in Billboard that get no mention here.
I've seen a few inaccuracies---I'm gonna check my actual charts to see if I can pinpoint the errors.
I don't think Lorraine Johnson was a "white" female disco singer. A white chick was on the cover--But Keefe told me she was a fat black chick.
Strangely, Teri DeSario's "Ain't Nothing Gonna Keep Me From You" in not listed--only "The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of".
Also, several later Bee Gees records: "He's A Liar " & The Woman In You" are not listed. I could swear they charted.
The Three Degrees get no mention til "Givng Up, Giving In"!!!!
I shall do research.![]()

Marky,
not sure if you went to Hues Corporation yet... but, there is a footnote saying that this was the earliest commercial disco record that went to #1 pop. (Something like that)That is all they could say. :x
In the meantime, songs like Soul Makossa would not show up on this book.
what we could suggest to Joel Whitburn is to give him a list of songs that hit the pop chart pre disco charts... and at least list those titles with the pop chart info...
then songs like
The Love I Lost
TSOP
Rock Your Baby
etc. etc. etc.
would appear in the next edition. :D
It's not your computer. Something is wrong with their link as I get the same message.Originally Written by rhessel
Thanks for the link. I'll call them tomorrow as their link is giving an error message on the Hot Dance/Disco book.Originally Written by efunk_adelic
If you like the format and copious info given in this book--check out the R&B book. It's twice as large (around 670 pages) and I've yet to find any inaccuracies there. It's staggering. Thery list the b-sides of every single and their highest position on the pop charts and the song title list in the back is staggering in it's depth.
Ok, now do I get something FREE from them folks???!!!
My fave tidbit so far from the "DISCO" book concerned Aneka who did "Japanese Boy"--says she was an English folksinger who donned a black wig and kimono to be "oriental".    TOOOOO FUNNNNNEEEE!!!!. (cue Dana Carvey as Johnny Carson : "I did not know that!!! Weird, wild stuff!!!)
Sad news: Brandi Wells of "Watch Out" fame is dead. I don't think I'd ever heard that.
