    bootleg clone mystery

I picked up a copy of "Got you dancing" Karisma, Jocelyn Brown, on Sound Of The Universe 2424 for $10 in a shop where they know their stuff - thinking it must be bootleg or re-press - it was packed as new - now I'm not sure -could've been lucky and got mint original (DJ not collector so not too fussy - but I like to know). The sound quality is not great and deteriorates at the end as discussed in other thread.
Anyone any ideas? - original or clone? - Can you tell? (it doesn't smell musty and 70s inside or have browning inner sleeve)
I've read about other bootleg imitations (Black Rose) so how many are out there? It would be tempting if you worked in a record pressing plant not to knockout a few rare ones at the weekend especially with so many people suffering ebay bidding fever.

Sounds like you have a bootleg. Contrary to the label copy on some of the originals, the record was not released in 1976 - it's from 1984. The quality comment cliches it for me.

20th Century Music (and whoever else have been 're-issuing' Peter Brown product of late) have no masters to work from.

Yes, this is a reissue from a needle drop released by 21st Century. It is not a bootleg as permission was given by Peter Brown to repress. Even got a chance to meet Brown while I was hanging out at 21st and he was a very mellow guy and happy to have his work out there. The Karisma track is in the Vault.

There are a lot of identical reissues 12s around at the moment, especially in the "the more you pay the better you feel" Ebay craze, so if you search for original issues be careful when buying these records for big money.

    Some 12" reissue I remember:

RISCO CONNECTIONS: Ain't no stopping us now (too darker red label)
QUEEN YANHA: Ain't it time (darker label)
RISCO CONNECTIONS: Sitting in the park (scanned label)
DIANA ROSS: Love hangover (older reissue)
ETHEL BETTY: I know you care (scanned label)
PLUNKY & ONENESS OF JUJU: Every way but loose (on Black Fire - scanned label)
GARY DAVIS: Chocolate Star EP (identical)
JO BOYER: Isabelle & the rain (identical)
JESSE GOULD: Out of work (clearer label)
SYLVIA STRIPLIN: Give me your love (identical)
MARGO's COOL OUT CREW: Death rap (clearer label and smaller label groove)
SPOONIE GEE: Spoonie rap (Different lettering)
CLOUD ONE: Patty Duke (says "distributed by 21th Century records")
RAYDIO: It's time to party now (wrong lettering in the cat # listing)
FRANKIE VALLI: Swearing to god (on 20th Century release)
ATMOSFEAR: Dancing in outer space (on UK Elite)
PAPER DOLLS: Get down boy (release on Tyson)
FAMILY TREE: Family tree (promo on Ananda)
    GRAND MASTER FLASH: Superrappin'
    SPOONIE GEE: New love rap
BOEING: Dance on the beat (on Italian Good Vibes)

plus some 12" that never existed originally in that format:

KOOL & THE GANG: Summer madness
CROWN HEIGHTS AFFAIR: I don't wanna change your love
EDDIE KENDRICKS: Date with the rain
    BARRABAS: On the road again

Bluebird Records (a London import shop) re-issued 'Expansions' on 12", around '84/'85; so it's a genuine re-release (unless you've just seen 10 copies on Gemm!).

Thanks Forrrce, I was wondering because the original US release was on "Flying Dutchman" and I'm not sure if they ever released a 12" remix.

    Mixmachine:
To my knowledge, there is no US 12" of 'Expansions' - though its b-side on the 1979 RCA UK 12", 'A Chance For Peace' is on 1976 Flying Dutchman (single-sided) 12".

I've not seen some of the boots you mention like the Risco "Park" one.

How can I tell the difference between the original and re-press of Boing. It was on Good Vibes originally, wasn't it?

The reissued Boeing is on the Good Times label (yellow and black) and its absolutely identical to the original. I believe this is not a boot but a legitimate reissue, since it comes from people that are very close to the original producers.
Anyway they made some other boot in the past..... and then......

    Leather I pmed you too!!
