    LP "My sweet summer suite"

I found an LP the other day from Love Unlimited Orchestra on 20th century titled my sweet summer suite. I love the song my sweet summer suite. How is the LP? Also, is my sweet summer suite the full length version on that?

The long version with the tribal intro is only available on a Promo only 12", it is rare and expensive, there is a second 12" without the long 'intro' so you'll need to know the catalog number, I used to have them around but can't find it now, the long intro version (7:17) is also available on a Mercury CD "The Best of Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra" (314-526-945-2), I don't know if this one is still available or OOP.

mixtape , the long 12" version was very difficult to get even back in the day, it used to sell for $200.00, most Deejays I knew had to mix with the Lp or the short 12" version, I was able to get in NYC an Acetate with the long 'Intro' and used that for a while.

Polygram reissued the long 12" on its Casablanca Timepiece series. Side 1 has "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me", 6:59 (Barry White). Side 2 is "My Sweet Summer Suite" listed at 7:07 (Love Unlimited Orchestra). Catalog # 874 133-1. And, that "Best of..." CD is still out there:

The Best of Love Unlimited Orchestra

Check out the Disco Records Vault to get the original 12" catalog # on 20th Century Records. I was looking for mine but alas, one of the missing. :( :x

The extended version has been on bootleg for many years, also, on a green label. The original 20th Century 12"s look exactly the same - I think they may have different matrix numbers from each other...but you can't tell them apart at a glance.

'Strange Games & Things' (from 'MSSS') was reissued a couple of years back on a Polygram CD, in its (previously unheard) full length, 9-minute form. Can't recall the CD name, but it's been deleted already, I believe. Highly recommended if you ever find out what the CD is!

The long version of 'Strange Games...' was bootlegged onto 12" straight away.
What would you do without your muesli...where would you be without a bowl?

I didn't know this version was ever re-issued on vinyl, I'll keep my eyes open for it. Thanks

The version listed here is the original 12" without the intro, (TDC64) the promo with intro version (7:17) is catalog # TDC 59 and side B is "Just living it up" not "Brazilian Love song " as in the original.

This 12" has to be the most problematic for me ever, after chasing it for years and finally getting a copy in the early 80's it was lifted a few years later from my club’s bin, the search started again but forgot all about it in the 90’s, then two years ago in my rush to bid I neglected to check the catalog number and won a copy for 21.00 that turn out to be the original copy that I already owned, :( Since finding the CD I’m not to eager to pay the $50-100 USD that it sells for this days.

    Hi Mix,

I wish my 12" was still around so I could check. The one in the vault times at 7:17 but you say it's not the promo with the intro. Really confused now. :-?

And I played the Casablanca reissue to make sure it had the intro: It does! :D

Nick, I also noticed both 12" with the same clock time, it could be one of them is not accurate or was edited, I saved an Ebay label scan and auction description of the TDC 59, this is where the info comes from, my 'Best of' CD also clocks at 7:17 according to the label.

You're like me. I have that 'Best of' cd, too, so there is no way I'm hunting around to replace my stolen promo. Not for those prices.

NickNack and Mixmachine - there were actually 3 pressings of My Sweet Summer Suite made by 20th Century back in 1976 / 1977. It is pretty confusing affair with wrong timings listed on every pressing variation!

TCD-59 white label: The first pressing was a promo with a white label ("20th Century Records Presents For Disco DJ's Only!!") that had the correct running time of 7:17 listed on the record label on both sides. This came with a plain white cover with a custom sticker which incorrectly states that the running time is 5:05.

TCD-59 blue label: This is the second pressing from 1976 which is in the scan above. The label lists the running time as 7:17, but the mix is slightly shorter than the WLP version, editing out the 4 bars of triangle and cowbell percussion before the first sustained piano note after the long percussion intro. The actual run time is 7:07. The flip side is a 4:45 extended version of "Just Living It Up" which only appears on this pressing (the lp version of JLIU runs 3:37). This slightly edited version of My Sweet Summer Suite was the one released on the Casablanca Timepiece 12" reissue and the "Best of" cd.

TCD-64: This third pressing was a commercial release from 1977. The "A" side was Brazilian Love Song while the B side incorrectly shows that "My Sweet Summer Suite" has a running time of 7:17. All copies I have seen actually have the edited 5:05 lp mix, not the extended version.

The blue label TDC-59 pressing *looks* like a commercial pressing, but I do not believe that it ever was officially released... They seem to be as rare or rarer than the WLP pressing. If I were to speculate, I would guess that they were planning a commercial release and so they re-edited it to smooth out the transition between the intro and the song (the WLP version is a bit abrupt and, to my ear, the 7:07 version transition is a bit smoother). A small number of pressings were done, but for some reason they cancelled the release.... Someone told me that Barry White did not really like the 7+ minute 'disco version' - so maybe he prevented it. A friend recalls getting the TCD-59 blue label pressing in the record pool months after the first white label pressings were received.

Anyway, this was a very interesting puzzle in the 20th Century discography... maybe someone else on the board can provide some additional info. Hope this helps!

In the groove, Thanks for the info, it is fun to learn all this details about one of my favorite Barry’s cuts, I didn’t know about the white label or the different edit it contains at all, never even seen one on Ebay! I always thought the TCD-59 was the promo or maybe a limited special edition (since it is not marked as “promo” or “DJ”)
