I genuinely think we are spoiled for choice in the UK as far as radio stations are concerned, as 'Soul Music' of which Disco is part of, is still listened to with great gusto here. Having said that, one of the better stations is French,
http://divaradio.net/....I quite like Solar, I know a few of the DJs on the station and they're nice guys & play good music.

Other stations include - the one I play on www.jazzsyndicate.co.uk, for decent house music & some Disco/Soul at times listen to www.unknownfm.com, otherwise go to the Soul Music Radio Forum where DJ's from a variety of stations post their playlists and take your pick!

For good, solid club music as played in the UK clubs in the '70s and '80s, Les Adams is the man, on Solar radio, Saturday night.
Most of the rest of those guys posting on the Soul radio forum are impossibly (in so much as; how would you obtain 95% of the tracks they mention/would you want to?) eclectic, don't you think?

As you may have noticed my show goes out at exactly the same time as Les's & I agree he does play good music and is way, way more 'qualified' in terms of music production, has a huge profile and deserves enormous respect for his contribution to the cause in dance music. I don't think I compete but to maintain a point of difference I do stick to Disco/Dance music from the late 70's, whereas he will venture into the 80's on a regular basis. Being a London boy I try and recreate what was heard in and around the clubs in this city at that time - it wasn't just 'full on' Disco, but also included a mix of Funk, Soul, and Jazz Funk.

The SMR forum is used a by a variety of DJ's across a number of stations including Solar and it was set up by the owner of Jazzsyndicate so a few of the DJ's post their jazz playlists who I assume you think are eclectic. I have never thought my shows to be eclectic, but if you do Q I take that as a compliment! 8)

Russ: I wasn't pointing the finger at you, but most of the other guys who've published their playlists. They must get all of 2 people (not/ literally) listening into their shows who know 50% of what they're playing.

It does open up a good discussion on the merits, or otherwise, of radio nowadays. My own personal view is that generally radio has become too eclectic and therefore worthless to most people, mirroring what's happened to music also. It's a shame, a crying shame.

    Re: your own radio station?

Q - You're right, it does open up a great discussion about radio - I have been involved in numerous debates about radio on other forums and the fact that nowadays mainstream radio is very narrow-based, that serves the purposes of the advertisers, mainstream record companies, the station owners and lastly (and least importantly) the listener. Radio (here in the UK anyway) has become personality led, where people listen to the DJ rabbiting on about some banal subject rather than the music. Every 14 minutes or so is an advert and they play about 7 tunes in the hour (of 3 mins duration). Internet, and to a similar degree Pirate radio is so much more about the music & with the change in licencing laws preventing mainstream radio from broadcasting over the web (well not quite but it's just not cost effective for them to do it anymore!) I'm sure it's where people are going to turn! What's exciting about this is that in 5 years or so time FM radio will be dead or dying, as a result of the advent of mobile wireless broadband internet. That coupled with podcasting will consign FM radio to the 'betamax' bin! Just think, Retroruss (or Les Adams ) through the 'car radio' on a Saturday night while on your way to your gig in Spain!

Apologies to mixtape for hijacking this thread!!

Russ: I'm not so sure I'll like this brave new world that you envision.

Recently I've been exposed to the pleasures of satellite TV. Hundreds of channels, but quite frankly 98% of them are rubbish and 95% do nothing but repeats, which are then repeated every few days/weeks. Too much choice/no real choice syndrome. The same thing is happening to radio with soooo many stations trying to get their share. So many internet stations with easy access will mean an overall drop in the quality of broadcasting and speaking as a music fan of sorts, I don't necessarily think that more music is the answer. After a while, non-stop music becomes like wallpaper. It's there in the background. It's the 'banal' chat between records that actually makes radio work...if it's done well. As humans, we have a need to be entertained, informed and to talk or be talked to. If what you say is the future, it ain't good....not in my book.

Black radio in NY in the early 1990's is how it ought to be. They went about 5 cuts deep into the current albums they were playing. Instead of pandering to crossover, they played older cuts. They did have mixes and the Quiet Storm but the interaction was more geniuine and realistic. Today, Black radio has expanded the talk from the morning shows to the afternoons and has become victim to a "Dr. Phil syndrome".

    Re: your own radio station?

Well, I'm a big talk radio fan and Air America radio works well for me. Musically, of course it would be all disco baby :-D I would do it the way some stations did in the mid 70s to early 80s. That is play the other album cuts that do or might work in the clubs. My best example is "Tonight's The Night" from Kleeer. While "Keep Your Body Working" was hot in the clubs, I really got to hear and know TTN on one of the FM stations I can't remember. It was shortly after this I heard them playing it hard in the clubs. Ahh, what sweet memories of those days 8-)

I think we are already there - it's just the delivery of these 'choices' that will become more sophisticated

Your right, of course, but my point was that commercial stations follow too much of a format, i.e. at 12 minutes past the hour there is a commercial, at 16minutes past the hour a traffic report etc., etc., if you want that then fine but the format that the pirates, and other non-commercial stations follow is not restricted by the need to deliver shareholder value & profit and is mainly done by music fans for music fans.

    Re: your own radio station?

Russ: Give me a professional over a well meaning amateur most days out of 10. Quite often amateurs will have a better playlist and have no fear, but if they lack even basic presenting skills (as many of them do) then that's a turn off too. Hell, I've been listening to small English speaking radio stations an awful lot lately (Spain..many unlicensed, every one very local) and quite frankly their output is in most cases diabolical. O.K. I agree not a perfect example due to their poor programming and the fact that anyone who speaks English tends to get the slots, but I believe it does go some way in making my point. For English speaking substitute specific genre music owning and then realise that a guy playing music that is sooo specific would more than likely be a turn off for maybe 99% of his potential listeners.

We haven't quite reached the free for all that you envisage. We still have mainstream broadcasting as the most listened to format. It's a generation thing I guess and it won't be too long before the computer generation have their way. Going by past records they have, to date, made everyone's lives worse, NOT the promised utopia that we should now be enjoying.:icon_twisted:

Did you see Top Gear the other week when Clarkson, Hammond & May hijacked a drive-time radio programme? They had more complaints than praise (albeit maybe from people who had become a tad instituionalised), mostly because they didn't do the (boring?) regular items at all well. Music (or in their case celebrities talking nonsense) alone just doesn't cut the mustard.

Cool Re: your own radio station?

I would go for Black dance music from 59 to 06, yes I like a whole lot of different sounds!

and I hope I reflect that in my show on jazzsyndicate.co.uk, hope you not pointing a finger at my playlists on the SMR forum quinny!

    Re: your own radio station?

Well, I owned 2 radiostations in Belgium, from 1984 till 1987. We had a small team of DJ's, all absolute crazy bout' music and trying to put a different sound on the airwaves.

During daytime we brought Hits (80's, but also a fairly amount of 60's and 70's), evenings were Rock-orientated and from midnight till 6:00 AM it was Disco and Dance. Mixed, raw and uncut. For us, those nights were the ultimate! We (1 American guy, 1 Italian girl and moi) played our favourites and we took live calls from listeners that could react every way they wanted.

We were arrested a few times for public offense, but hey, it was 100% fun. After political struggle for keeping our licenses (in fact we were pirates, just like many other stations in Belgium BITD), I finally got the legal papers and sold the licenses to a Scandinavian group, because the funfair was the main biz!

Would I ever restart? Maybe, if I find some time and if the expenses are not too high. Then it would be strictly 70's Disco, but....there are already so many stations at this moment, so ....it will not be in the next future.

    Re: your own radio station?

Speaking of New York Radio Stations, this was in The Daily News today:

WKTU lines up Whoopi & Cubby

    By DAVID HINCKLEY
    DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

WKTU (103.5 FM) yesterday dropped its morning team of Goumba Johnny and Baltazar and as of July 31 will become the flagship station for the new nationally syndicated morning team of Whoopi Goldberg and longtime WHTZ afternoon host Paul (Cubby) Bryant.
Goumba and Baltazar did their last show yesterday. Until Goldberg and Bryant start, WKTU plans a "music-intensive" morning show that rotates hosts - starting today with veteran Charlie Burger.

Bryant, who was officially announced yesterday as Goldberg's sidekick, said: "I never thought I'd leave Z100. But the chance to work with Whoopi Goldberg on a nationally syndicated show is something I couldn't pass up. I'm still pinching myself."

He expects to work at WHTZ (100.3 FM) through June 23, take a vacation, then start trial runs of the show with Goldberg on July 10.

Bryant said the music on the show is still being worked out but will be compatible with WKTU, which has had a dance format. With artists like Rob Thomas and Kelly Clarkson, he said, it will lean more toward adults than the music he has been playing on Z100.

Bryant will also give up his music director position at WHTZ but noted that since WKTU is a sister station, "I'll still be working closely with my Clear Channel friends like Tom Poleman [senior vice president of programming]."

He said he and Goldberg plan a show "that parents won't have to turn off" when kids come into the kitchen.

"We'll give people some laughs, some music and everything they need for the day - in 30 minutes."

I really like the Disco Heat
    http://www.thediscoheat.com/

    There's enough obscure stuff.

I'm not crazy about the request system. It's a mixed blessing, you get to hear some great stuff, then again, every time I listen I hear Julie Budd Music to My Heart & that long, long, long Madleen Kane Forbidden Love Medly.

    Re: your own radio station?

To further what soul preacher spoke of this would be my format

    1)70's
    2)80's
    3)90's
    4)'00
    5)60's
    6)instrumental/jazz
    7)70's
    8)80's
    9)90's
    10)'00's
    11)60's
    12)70's/80's/90's
    13)instrumental/jazz

8-9PM Dancefloor (just soulful dance music from all eras)
9PM-2PM Quiet Storm (mostly obscure Ballads and instrumentals)

*About 50% would be upbeat soul with the other half being midtempo or ballads.
*No wake-up club or an afternoon psycho-romance lesson. For those with an ear for current urban radio, you know what I mean.

    Re: your own radio station?

    Wow!
    this radio station is great!!!

just when I thought I had virtually every disco song ever made, now I hear this station filled with tons of songs I never even heard before! The FM radio around here is so lame, they only play the same common crap over and over every day. They totally suck!!!! But this internet station is great! This is what Ive heard since I "tuned in"

Viola Wills - If you could read my mind -
I think I used to hear this one on KTU back when I lived in Jersey. But I dont have the record, so it was cool to hear it again, and in this long version. a very good song! This was the only song in this list that I heard before. Thats amazing! I thought I practically heard them all!

elis second coming - love chant - this is a neat little song. I enjoyed it.

Slick - sexy cream - this was a pretty cool song, too.

Sylvester - over and over - What album is this from? this is not in my collection. I never heard it before, and its a totally awesome song!!!!
Holy smokes, Ive got to get this one. My goal is to get every Sylvester song ever made. This one gets a 2 thumbs up from me!

wildflower - harlem nocture - a very enjoyable song. I need to get this record, too.

    other songs I heard tonight:

JOB orchestra - open the doors of your heart
Julie Budd - One fine day
Armada Orchestra - same old song
Pattie bro - heartbreak in disquise (has great disco strings!)
Karla Garrison - this could be the night (a beautiful singer, great voice!)
Tasha Thomas - midnight rendezvous (sounds french; I have another song by her)
    stanley turrentine - Disco Dancing
salsoul strings - more than a woman (Salsoul Strings? Is that the salsoul orchestra or what?)

    Re: your own radio station?

My station would sound something like this: http://www.live365.com/stations/parker1028

but with a 50% mix of current dance records thrown in. Eventually, I'll do that on this station but I just started this new hobby and want to figure out the pro's and cons with familiar music first.

The response has been great with over 600 listener hours logged in during my first month of operation.

Oops, I always pick that one  And Costandinos' "Hunchback too..." If you see that those are coming up^, there's a fairly chance that I'm online there :D :D :D

It's one of my favourite stations and what I really do like about his playlist: it's all vintage stuff. Strictly 70's and very, very early 80's. So I'm not bothered by modern Dancemusic there!
