why dont most disco songs (records) have any serious BASS?

i have four dual 15 inch mid/high speakers and four 18 inch subs (eight pieces, four stacks total) which is pretty much equal to a small club sound system all in my basement

but i always have to turn my bass levels all the way UP on my dj mixer EQ, on my crossovers and on my stand alone EQ's just to get the necessary bass response that i have grown accustomed to from todays music at normal levels (house, trance, jungle, hip hop etc..)

my system is LOUD and i would love for it to pump all the records i play at thunderous levels but for some reason it usually lacks serious BASS whenever i play disco records

    anyone have any suggestions?

...because that *was* considered a lot of bass back then. Compared to your average rock record from the 70s, a disco 12" has way more bass. The current practice of mixing music with the bass at absurd levels really only took off in the late 80s (reggae notwithstanding).

The bass level in the recordings today is.....unreal, it not exists in the "nature".
It's artificially made by electronic devices.
In the "disco era" it was made by real players with analog instruments.I think the recordings made beetwen 1979 to 1984 has the best ever recording quality. The bass is bass.Mid is mid.High is high. How it could be.No more no less.

    Peace,

    Blaxman

In regards to bass in 70's disco, there are some songs which to me have lots of bass:

Gene Chandler - Get Down 1978
    Paradise Express - Dance 1978
Jermaine Jackson - Bass Odyssey 1976
    Pleasure - Glide 1978
Memphis Horns - Get Up & Dance 1976
James Wells - My Claim To Fame 1978
    Isaac Hayes - Don't Let Go 1979
Rose Royce - Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is 1976
Roundtree - Get On Up 1977

    For bass, try:
1)Crown Heights Affair "Dreamin' A Dream (Goes Dancin").....my promo copy had some boom to it.
2)Fever "Standing In The Shadows Of Love"....the 12" promo is LOUD for the time.

Don't try ANYTHING from Butterfly Records

Give it Up-Turn it a Loose/ Mother Popcorn Live in Augusta Version by JB has lots of bass; so does We've got our own Thing by CJ and Co., Black Soul Music by Black Soul, Wild Safari by Barrabas, Bananaticoco by Max-B, etc.
Music then, was more varied when it came to instruments, more artistic, more rich. In today's "music" you basically got bass, drums, and synthesizers only. You take one of those away and you basically got nothing.

Maybe you should try with FUNK! That's where the seventies thumpin' bass was.
    Parliament/Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins, James Brown...
On the "funkydisco" style: Ray Parker Jr. and Raydio, Slave ("Slide"), Herbie Hancock... even Stanley Clarke did some disco records.

thanks for all the info (22 year old here)

even though it lacks all the SUBSONIC BASS levels that i have grown accustomed to recently

in my opinion disco is still the best

unfortunately many young people around my same age do not share the same beliefs i do

    You're most welcome.

And BTW, that wasn't a stupid question at all...

even though it lacks all the SUBSONIC BASS levels that i have grown accustomed to
Well, as you've discovered, you can always get that effect with EQ... alternately, there are hardware units available that can synthesize subharmonics, for those records were there just isn't any bass at all (like many 7" singles). Many disco CD reissues have massive amounts of EQ and compression applied to them to make their overall sound levels more like today's dance music... compare Unidisc's CD reissues of Cerrone's albums vs the vinyl, and you'll quickly hear what they've done.
in my opinion disco is still the best
    I second that!

unfortunately many young people around my same age do not share the same beliefs i do
Same thing with most people in my age group (early 30s)...
