Rarities once owned; now foolishly gone?

Has anyone ever.. sold/destroyed/got rid of/had a funeral pyre for/threw out in the garbage... a special soul. funk, disco, jazz, record of years gone by that they now regret?

There must be many stories of "special" albums, &"s & 12" singles from your past that - unbeknownst to you at the time - you have foolishly parted with for a particular reason?

Please reveal the record/s & the situation....(I know, the memories may hurt sometimes, but cleanse yourselves now...!).

    NO!!!!

I try to take care of my stuff as good as i can I and would never throw out / sell / give away any single one of my records.
The only record I ever lost was a copy of the Kim Wilde's first LP. Not that it ever mattered that much to me though  but i'd still like to know where the hell it went.
    There was life after disco!!

    OK......
    .... I'll tell you a SAD SAD story..... :(

.... when I was in my teens an began to be fond of music (especially disco) I began to buy records but also used to collect mixtapes. Then I began to dj and in the years collected a lot of mixtapes made by myself or my dj friends. Whenever I visited a disco I asked the local dj a tape or two (often making trades with my mixtapes).
I collected mixtapes from all over the places I visited.... a lot from italian discotheques, djs and radios but also many others made in Ibiza, Marbella, Costa Brava, Mykonos & the Greek Islands, Saint Tropez, Paris, London, Barcelona, Madrid, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Buenos Aires & Punta del Este etc etc.
When I left djing to concentrate on my studies, all these tapes went stocked in big cardboard boxes and remained at my parent's house for years. Unfortunately about ten years ago my parents had to move to a smaller house and many things were threw out, my mixtapes included

I know you understand my sadness...

    Records I wish I hadn't thrown out...

    Sun Palace - Rude Movements
    Matsubara - SOS
Gibson Brothers - 12" Sunshine Sound Acetate
    and countless others.

Now don't get me started on CDs!

Oh, back before I started this site in 1996 I threw out several years worth of Dance Music Reports and Vinyl Mania mags. Bummer :-(

A couple of years back, I played at a party for Australians at a YMCA in Queensway(!). In a silly fit of kindness, I gave an enquirer the UK 12" of Mass Production's 'Welcome To Our World' which I'd just played - unaware that it's worth loads of money! Why do I regret it? I never liked the bloke anyway (and even less now)! A lesson...be careful how much you drink!

A few years back I needed the space and started to thin out my collection packing at least 3k for transport to my local Goodwill agency, most if not all were 12” records I never played, listened to or rejected at the time, luckily after discovering around the same time this site and Ebay’s disco section I put a stop to the idea, but not before around 1000 pieces were transported or tossed by the curb, I don’t know exactly what was thrown out, but I found many good and valuable records mentioned here in what was left behind.

Also in the early 90’s I finally discarded a box full of classic 8 track mixtapes that now could have been saved with all the new ‘restoration’ software available, most were my own mixes but some others were mixed by local Deejays in the early days…

 I gave away 5 moving boxes of 12"s to two friends years ago when I first moved to this part of Jersey. These were things I thought were 'garbage'. Each box had to have between 75 - 100 pieces.

:( A few years later 3 more moving boxes became water damaged in the garage. How the f@#$ did all this water get in my garage? :(

:x BITD I used to 'loan' my music to other dj friends. They walked off with my Demis Roussos, several of my Sunshine Sound acetates including a Teddy Pendergrass which I loved, Rick James, Voyage... you name it. My lover smacked some sense into me.

 And, just to prove how stupid I could be, one Friday way-back-when I picked up all our latest releases from the Record Pool. It was a 'slow' week, only one box of about 45 - 50 releases. I then went down to the Village and hung out with my friends until 4 in the morning. I lived in Queens at the time so the subway ride from Manhattan was quite long. I fell asleep and when I woke up, I was at my stop in Jamaica. I jumped up to get off before the doors closed and left the box of records on the seat. I waved goodbye as the train pulled away. Judy Weinstein was not pleased with me next week when I had no feedback and was begging for duplicates.

    Hey Forrce,
What would you consider the value for this 12" today.I have the US 12" with the b side Wine Flow Disco on the Atlantic label. Can't find one listed on GEMM.

I don't know for sure, but I'm always told it goes for a couple of hundred dollars on eBay and is sought after for the b-side - the only 12" appearance of 'Cosmic Lust'. The silly thing is I already have 2 US copies like yours, which are probably worth $30, if even that...and likely as much 'cos it was sampled by Moodymann! Knowing I gave the UK copy away to a berk when I could have sold or traded is rather annoying.

    My story is pathetic.

I subscribed to Billboard Magazine from an early age starting in 1978.... and was a faithfull subscriber til around 1990.

I kept every one of them!

Around 1997 (they were stored at my mothers house)..my mother made me get rid of them or she was gonna throw them away... I saved just a few... can you imagine how I felt. :(

Rarities once owned; now foolishly gone!

Dear all concerned - I am loving this site after discovering it quite by accident and your responses to this are both astounding and heartbreaking!

One incident that still stays with me: some years ago I lent a friend some of my original "7" singles. Among them was:
    * Magic Disco Machine "Scratchin'" (Motown)
    * Banbarra "Shack Up" (United Artists")
    * Grover Washington Jnr "Mr. Magic"
** and a few others of this era, which titles escapes me now.

After wondering where they were for ages, I later found out this "friend" has sold some on eBay as the two mentioned above went for a pricely sum.

As this guy frequently contributed to the now defunkt "Big Daddy" soul/funk mag, I noticed he included "my" copy of "Shack Up" within a rare funk seven's article, can you believe!!!

He has since replaced these losses with some other (lesser-cherished-by-me)45's but I thought it was very rude he didn't own up as I had to find out he did this without consulting me at all!

Can anyone out there confirm if these original 45's are actually worth as much I think they are? They were in VG condition. Let me down easy, okay!
    :)

    herbalizer12,

Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy hanging out with us and checking out the Disco Records Vault A-Z.

As for your situation, I can only imagine how you must feel. It's for reasons like these that I simply refuse to lend out any records or CDs even to close friends. They've gotten used to it and understand.

Cheers tons Bernie! I can spend hours here really!

I am now familiar with some of your "regulars", though where can I find profiles about NicNac & yourselves? I assume you both started this site, but wanna find out both of your disco backgrounds/histories? 8)

This site is truly a dedicated work of love & art. The search for answers to many of my long-lost questions I know will/can be vindicated by others on here! A-Maz-Ing!!!

    keep the fire burning!!!!

Glad you are enjoying the site. Thanks for the kind words.

As for profiles, I started this site back in 1996 and you can read a little about me near the bottom of my contact page.

Nicky can fill you in better on his, but he is a former NYC Disco DJ. You can check out more on Nicky by reading the interview I did with him a few years back.

Ah well... I have some sad stories to tell...

    1) When I moved to Buenos Aires eleven years ago, I left some boxes of stuff at my sister's home. Years passed; I checked and took some things with me from time to time. Then 3 years ago my sister moved and those boxes ended at my brother's. Now, this guy have like 15 cats. The boxes ended in the garage. Guess what? When I finally found them, they were all pissed over!!!! Then, under the vigilant eye of my bro ("better do something with that, it stinks!") I took out every single item on the boxes: books, University stuff, old cassettes and also some vinyl. Most of it went to the garbage because of the odor. Some months later, I entered this forum for the first time. Now I'm buying vinyl again and thinking about that copy of the "Thank God it's Friday" soundtrack... Bright new, all 3 LPs... Bring them back, I will listen to them with a gas mask! Sigh!

    2) Last year, in looking for a decent turntable to play my newly-buyed vinyl, a friend loaned me a decent one but with no stylus. I made sure my friends knew that I was looking for one. Then, another friend's girlfriend says to me "hey! We have some equipment at home. What do you need?" After some detailed explanation, the girl -about 25, from the always-CD generation- says: "so, you say that thing that touches the record?" Well, some days later she brings the stylus along, but it wasn't the type I was looking for.
Some months later, this same girl moves and some of her stuff ends temporarily at home, including the "equipment" which she gives me as a gift. It's a Philips all-in-one with a pretty decent turntable, tape deck, radio & amplifier. I'm playing my records in a similar but slightly better one (an all-on-one Hitachi), so I pile up the baffles and I can mix from one set of baffles to the other and play DJ. Then... I discover the Philips have no stylus! When I met her again and mention this, she says: "oh yeah, that thing, I had it in my bag and then one day I discovered it and threw it away... You can always buy another one, huh?"
Imagine me trying to put a straight face while saying: "Huh? Well yeah, it's no problem... only that bssbsbsbssbs..."
    "I beg your pardon?"
"Only that the stylus alone costs more than all the rest!".
Today I checked a local store that sells only stylus. I didn't realize at first that all prices were in dollars (the ratio with our peso is 3:1). Well, the cheapest model sells for US$ 12. I asked for my other stylus (the one in the Hitachi) and found it costs US$ 25. Of course I'm talking about replacements; a Sure original for instance goes for more than 100 dollars.

In a word: Maaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnn!!!!!

    herbalizer12,

Welcome and really glad you're excited about the board and having a good time. Give any and all credits about the site to Bernie. It's his baby, totally. My lover found the site surfing one day, turned me on to it and I guess I've just been here since then. Have met and still meeting some great people. The music knowledge of the people here continues to astound me. And not just music, all the surrounding aspects: Industry People, Electronics and Media, Where Music was, is and most likely will be. These guys (and gals :) ) can give you answers.

Like Bernie said, check out my interview. If you want more details, just ask. :D

Wow! Thanks for the leads, Bernie & Nick! I've now read your profiles and am aghast at both your achievements. What a pleasure it is to find this site!

Just spent the past hour alone wading thru the Record labels list. Just wondering... has anyone got a complete (or near enought to it?) 12"/Album list for disco/disco-soul labels like Salsoul/Brunswick/Malaco???

I guess there would be one on Salsoul site, but just wondering if anyone knows if anyone has done a complete record catalogue list as yet?

    Yours Soulfully,
    herbalizer12

    Jeez...Where do I start?

First, in the early 80's a DJ friend of mine rolled with about 40-50 of 12" disco tracks, "The BreaK" by Katmandu for one. Also included was three Betty Davis lps, all hard to get now!

Mid 80's...a flood in the basement of my house then caused by a busted pipe while at work. This took out about 100 disco, r & b, and rock lps. Fortunately Jazz and other r & b, disco was untouched.

1999.....ex-wife took out 350 cds, 250lps including "Solid" by Mandrill. Fortunately, she only got about 1/3 of my collection at the time. Most of my latin, disco and Jazz I was able to save. I since have replaced most of the cds but not the lps, which were in mint condition.

Like Sinatra sang, "That's Life", like the kids say, "It's all good". 8)

This is great. I've been looking for a site with a forum like this for ages.

Anyway, I had the first LP by a group called Klyque (1981) which I payed one English pound for, then stupidly exchanged in a second hand shop. But WORSE still, I exchanged a mint - with inner picture sleeve thingy - copy of Sylvester's 1978 "you make me feel.." mighty bad LP. It must be like gold dust, because I haven't seen a copy since.

    Hmmmmphh!

When I went to study for a year in Germany, I loaned a few of my records to a so-called "friend". You can guess the rest. :( When I returned to England, he refused to give the records back. Over the years, I have managed to replace most of them. The two that HURT :x the most were:

Willie Bobo - Hell Of An Act To Follow LP :( - with the immortal Always There on it. Luckily I now have that version on a CD compilation entitled Diggin Deeper - The Roots Of Acid jazz

El Coco - Let's Get It Together - 12" remix - the saxy version! Luckily I had taped that one before I went to Germany. I have now since bought the original LP.

Also, like many of you, I chucked out all my magazines - piles of Black Echoes, Blues and Soul and Record Mirror. What a stupid thing to do! Grrr! :x

All I have to say is why did I have to participate in those damned garage sales! As I started seeing $$$ signs, I started putting more and more records out for sale that I thought I would never play again. Only now am I realizing the treasures that I basically gave away. Greed, never a good thing! :x
