Quick-time with the 12" link there, Bernie :D ...oh, dear...is it gonna cost me?
In my naughty hour, I've offered an ex-Ms. Forrrce an Abba collection on CD. Buy it? Nah - but some Kazaa-ing later, I'm skipping through the tracks to weed out the duffs - and find myself boogieing to 'Voulez Vouz'. It sounds a lot more sophisticated than it did at the time, though still camp and a bit trashy. Can't stop playing it! (D'oh )
You've probably been here before, but did it see a lot of 'credible' disco action first time 'round?
After my recent Bee Gees 'epithany' is the kebab house, I'm starting to worry.

What would you do without your muesli...where would you be without a bowl?
Only your rep as a died in the wool jazz-funkster :-) Don't worry, everyone loves at least 1 or 2 Abba songs.Originally Written by Forrrce

My ABBA timeline...
'Waterloo' - memories of being taken on a tour of London by my father...Buckingham Palace and all that malarky. What a big, scary city I lived in!
'I Do, I Do, I Do' - playground crush on Lisa Hazel. Still feel it now, over a quarter-century later...
'Dancing Queen' - on the cusp of moving from our old terraced house, to more luxurious surroundings 50 yards down the road.
'The Winner Takes It All' - a depressing period, as I had ruined the tape machine - and wasn't to record again for some time...
'Voulez Vouz' - or is it 'Tragedy' by the Bee Gees???
Forrrce: Just to let you know that ABBA never saw much disco action where I played. They were looked down upon, disco wise.
There were exceptions. Like a week in Marbella when my boss thought it would be a good idea to have a Swedish band that was staying at the local club 33 hotel (all Swedes, Norwegians etc) come in to the club and do a live set every night. I HAD to play Waterloo otherwise I would have been shot.
Dancing Queen survived a few weeks and that's about it.
BTW: Both my wife and I HATE ABBA (throws up at the very second mention of their name). Our daughter loves 'em. Doh!!!
Truth be told, I can't imagine Abba being played in any discos here, pre 'Car Wash' and all the other 'School Dinners'-type cheese fests, though such retro nights are not for the musically serious.Originally Written by QUINNY
I just wondered, really, as the Americans (for better or for worse) have never indulged in the type of snobbery us limeys pride ourselves on. Irony, for want of a better word, has played a part in UK club culture since that balearic nonsense in the late '80s, so playing perceived no-nos nowadays is looked upon as daring, experimental, or even groundbreaking.

OMG Forrrce, this is just sooo damn funny!
You use over 700 posts to build up your reputation as a knowledgeble jazz funkster and then destroys everything by declaring your love for ABBA of all groups - and even calling "Voulez Vous" Sophisticated! :o
I've have to give you credit for being honest at least. Stuff like this is what makes this forum the funniest place on the net!
Evidently, the comic potential of my revelation passed me by. The cat's out of the bag - and I'm out of the closet... :oops:Originally Written by K-Bee

And this is after I listed all those Hi NRG CD comps that thumped on my doorstep yesterday. Or was it because of that ( y'know, let it out the bag why a potentially bigger faux pas is being made by someone else, hoping no one will notice)?![]()
We all have our ABBAS.
A new dictionary definition?
I think it did fairly well in the club scene over here. I was not into ABBA and it passed me by. Playing it later, I found I liked it but by then it was 'passe' as far as the crowd was concerned. Someone covered it later (Italo release I believe) which got some play also.Originally Written by Forrrce

It's not as if I'm gonna go to bed each night listening to Eurobeats 'n' thumpin' strings.Only funky toons can soothe my soul.
I know what you're doing Quinny,
you are just checking the BPM's and writing them down for future reference...cool gotcha. I feel a lot better now
Mmmmmmmmm...not sure 'bout the first bit - I'm pretty certain I logged on to share my new experience with the disco world and your new thread had just appeared. But, yes...we all have our Abbas, or our Lieutenant Pigeons.Originally Written by QUINNY

Expect to see me posting on the hi-nrg page pretty soon, consoling a desperate Quinny over the Record Shack/Nightmare CD collection he'll be touting on there any day now!
Forrrce: Just a quick note.
I've been amazed at the output of one Ian Levine. I knew he got into production, but boy did he get into production. It's been interesting to see the breadth of his writing and production skills, although it has to be said that much of his prodigious output, was rather derivative at times. Eastbound Expressway though 'Never Let Go' was a very good record from day one, which I always liked. The voice box sounds great on CD.
Hi NRG rules............but not for me.![]()
So Quinny, which is it...
Are you pregnant or just a little pregnant? :-)
Forrrce,
This goes both ways as I have been more appreciative of the jazzier and funkier things that you Brits have brought to the forum in the last few years. Much of it I had never heard or just never gave it the time of day. I now find myself enjoying a lot of it so thanks.
Since you seem to be open-minded, I'd like to hear what you think of say Boris Midney...? Check out Danny Krivit's edit of "Catch the Rhythm" by Caress (Boris Midney) on the "Edits by Mr K" CD and then compare it to the original 12" on Warner Bros. Now if you like this then all hell has truly broken lose!

Bernie,
The names that always used to put the fear of God into me when buying records were Moroder/Bellotte, Decoteaux, Costandinos and Midney...though in all fairness, I've liked pretty much all of Donna Summer's hits since the '70s. I'll always recall being intrigued by the 'Judas Iscariot' 12" in a local record shop, which eventually closed down. I never saw the record again 'til some 18 years later, in a second hand shop - and boy, was Constandinos's name mud after that day!
I've had a Caress 12" and a European-USA Connection LP and both were evicted from the premises. Last year, even, on one of my jazz-buying trips - I encountered a '60s LP on Impulse by The Russian Jazz Quartet - featuring a young Boris Midney! It anaesthetised me...
There are some things that pleasantly surprise me - 'Megaton Man' on Salsoul is actually pretty funky in parts...I quite like things like, for example, 'I Love You So' by Manny's...and we've even agreed on Kumano's 'I'll Cry For You' being a track of certain qualities that ultimately, takes getting used to.
I'm willing to risk another Midney airing in the name of science, so I'll keep a look out for that CD. Stand by your crosses!!!
Now that is really interesting as I bought this record when it first came out and really liked the hybrid style. Very hard record to find especially now. How did you hook up with that?Originally Written by Forrrce
As for Bert Decoteaux, he did redeem himself with "You Gave Me Love" by Crown Heights Affair.

A mate played me the Manny's, which I'd always avoided because it was lumped in with hi-nrg. Some of the melodic twists are a bit 'BBC2 period drama' :o but it's quite a tough tune in its way.Originally Written by Bernie
I've completely overlooked the Decoteaux/CHA connection - I've been a fan of 'You Gave Me Love' since day one and when I got to know the CHA structure, just took it for granted that it was the two Swedish(?) ladies on production credits. That's a surprise.
Decouteax has made some good records, I know - but sometimes you can only give up when you find so much dross by one man.
