Discussed and listened to the earlier version of this only last Saturday. Probably my favourite cut by her.

Five Corners Quintet : Three Corners.
Actually tuned in to Mr. Peterson's show last week and was quite impressed by this - sounds like Roy Ayers, circa 'West Coast Vibes'. Modern, but classic in sound.

Ronnie Mathews : Manha Do Carnival.
A criminally under-recorded pianist who has never put a foot (or finger) wrong. Regularly spin his 'The Thang' LP, also.

The Five Corners Quintet is classic jazz with all the benefits of modern production tecniques, Eero Koivistoinen is on sax (so you know it's gotta be good). I was luck enough to get sent a promo 10" copy, will be in the shops mid Feb 04.
The Ronnie Mathews is a great piece of mid-tempo fender jazz, bit tricky to find though (even goes for big bucks in Japan where it originates from).
Carmen Lundy has such a great voice, never get tired of hearing this track.

    Hiya Forrrce,
The circles we move in are sometimes smaller than we think!
I know of another Mark Taylor here in the South of England who plays soul & jazz, so I changed my dj name in the early 90s to Mark GV Taylor (also part of the Dig Family from Leeds, check Straight No Chaser playlists!)
Do you know any of the guys at Soul 24-7 radio?

Mark, you do the show with Adrian Leach? I haven't listened in a lot because I work Sundays and don't get home 'til late. The people we have in common would be along the lines of Cooper, Albert, etc...ringing any bells?!

I do go out occasionally and I still DJ from time to time. I play mainly boogie and disco, plus fusion if I don't get booed off. I should be doing a little project with John in the near future - I've been buying records from him and the other guys sin ce around '89. I do the Cedar Audio restoration for the label that he used to work for. Anything else you want to know, I'll PM you.

Also constantly on the look out for 'The Bottom End' for Seymour!

A small world indeed! I know Seymour very well, he often comes round my place for a disco or jazz music session.
He finally found out the background of The Bottom End!
Turns out it was a 12" released by a Californinan audio company. They had it made for testing high end hi-fi equipment (the B-side is church organ music!!!)

That's right, so if anyone here knows M&K audio from LA - we need some copies of one of their test LPs!

    A Jazz Ten

    1. Shirley Horn - "Here's To Life"
    2. Gene Harris - "The Concord Years" 2CD - Concord
    3. Tony Bennett - "The Art Of Excellence" - featuring a little-known duet with late Ray Charles of "Everybody Has The Blues" by James Taylor that's the bomb - Columbia
    4. Etta Jones - "Doin' What She Does Best" - Savoy Jazz
    5. Houston Person - "My Romance" - High Note
    6. Frank Sinatra - "Sinatra/Jobim" - Reprise
    7. Stan Getz - "Jazz Round Midnight - Bossa Nova" - Polygram
    8. Etta James - "Mystery Lady" - Private Music
    9. Billie Holiday - "Lady In Satin" - Digital Remaster with outtakes - Columbia
    10. Frank Sinatra - "Frank Sinatra" - Reprise 4-CD set w/booklet.

Favorite new artists include: vocalist Diane Linscott, (her last album, a '98 indie, "I Love Being Here With You" is available used on Amazon or by emailing dljazz@yahoo.com). Richie Hart, blues magician, just played my club and is accompanied by three cats with credentials as long as your arm, including my friend Pete Levin on the Hammond B3. The album, "Blues in the Alley" will be on shelves November 3. Finally, I noticed in a posting above that someone misspelled Joey Defrancesco's name; I have most of his oeuvre. It's a damn shame that his "Falling in Love with Love" - Concord was nominated for "Best Jazz Solo Performance" Grammy but didn't win -- Chick Corea got it... like HE needs another Grammy. Defrancesco appears on this album with a singer named "Joe Doggs." Listen carefully to the vocalist; and then look at the fact that he's neither pictured too clearly nor are his other works described at all in a lengthy and glowing liner note by The Master -- Quincy Jones -- himself. You know why? Joe Doggs just happens to be the jazz vocalist stage name for none other than actor Joe Pesci!

All the best, Paul - a.k.a. JudyDoggie

    Gil Evans

    To Forrrce:

I noticed a number of Gil Evans discs in your "10s."

My friend Pete Levin has played on a number of them. See his discography at www.petelevin.com. I think you'll like his style.

If you're in USA on East Coast this weekend you can hear him play in CT. www.asianfusion.net/szetok click on "jazz."

Is this really true? The oddball humour of Joey Defrancesco never fails to entertain me. Just take a look at the cover from his "The Champ" cd

If I didn't know any better I would take this for a 70s disco cover

    Joe who?

    Dear K-Bee:

It's well-known in Hollywood circles that Mr. Pesci loves to sing songs, especially those from the American Standard Songbook. It's well-known in jazz circles, that Pesci's a big fan of DeFrancesco (jazz is my business). If you don't have "Falling in Love With Love," by all means either buy it or go on Amazon.com and listen to the clips and you'll know what I mean.

Mr. DeFrancesco's sense of humour is memorable, as well. To see him in concert, or better, meet him, is to love the guy!

Listen to the record and you tell ME that it isn't Joe Pesci singing. (And it ISN'T "Little" Jimmy Smith, either).
