wow really loving this thread guys. I just saw it today, but I am going to have to check out a lot of these suggestions because I love some instrumental funk :)
I was browsing youtube when I came across this nice 1976 Jazz funk performance. The drummer in this group would go on and form Yellow Magic Orchestra, which was well known for their Computer Game track. I just wanted to share the clip because these guys are so tight, and its always a treat to watch good music played live. They're called the Sadistics, formerly known as Sadistic Mika Band, and this starts as a jam as the players are introduced (in japanese), which then turns into a tracked called 'Time to Noodle'.
