    What is old?

I was wondering what is old? Would a live mix from 1994 be old or what they call old school? How would u define something that should be in the Dance Classics bin a record store?

A 'dance classic' is strictly in the 'ear of the behearer'. Until a few years ago, I only heard the term 'old school' being associated with late '70s/early '80s rap. Bear in mind that this term was applied in the '80s, when some of the records under said banner were only four, five or six years old.

'Old school' seems to mean little more than a couple of years old nowadays, so I suppose in some ways, there's not much in it.

In a 'dance classics' section, I would expect to see house anthems - and maybe some well-known disco, perhaps - even though my personal interpretation of a dance classic would be, essentially, 'dance music' pre-house. A 'disco classic' section should do exactly what it says on the tin.

I first heard the term 'Old Skool' / 'Old School' back in the early '90s when it was used to define an older style of 'happy rave', as opposed to the then, more popular, jungle/trance/hardcore stuff.

In today's terms, I'd expect it to mean anything from say 3 years to 16 years ago as the trend is towards calling anything from the Disco era up to House music, Classic Dance. I think Forrrce and I are about the same there.

Id say anything from the 70's and 80's for dance music would be concidered the classics/old school, whatever ya wanna call it. But the 90's?? No, thats far from classics.

It seems that in this decade the new classics are the 80s stuff just like in the 90s everyone was having a 70s craze. Probably in 10 years eveyone will start considering the 90s stuff classics...and that everyone will surely be the 90s teen crowd who lived this "music".

I don't like the 90s at all but there was a bit of good stuff made back then.

Yeah, I can't wait for the "Who Let The Dogs Out" (HOOO-HOOO) revival. And for the day when the creators of the "Macarena"...and "Whoops...There It Is" and "Short, Short Man" are honored for their contributions to the art of music and inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Now playing at weddings and office parties everywhere. You can't revive something that's never gone away...

    and "Whoops...There It Is"
Oh come on, be nice. Whoomp!... There it is was certainly no artistic masterpiece, but it was *fun* -- something mainstream music hasn't felt like in a long time, between angst rock and thug rap. I have to disagree with you Marky -- this one deserved to be a hit.

    and "Short, Short Man"
And folks don't understand why I say "people suck!" all the time. Novelty hits really piss me off. They're sometimes mildly amusing the first few times you hear them, but after 600 plays, you just want to scream to everyone "OKAY, CAN WE MOVE ON FROM THIS, PLEASE?" As with "I'm Too Sexy", people just couldn't get enough of these. It's as though they're just as funny the 100th time around as the first. *sigh*

I have a co-worker who got a stuffed dog that plays a horrid lo-fi sample of "Who Let The Dogs Out" when squeezed. She laughs hysterically whenever someone sets it off, even though she's had the frikkin' thing for months.

well Giovanni, your list of classifications here is pretty much right on the money in my book. We've covered this topic a few months back and I must say the term old school is used very loosely now a days. I've done shows where a particular person that looks around 22-25 would ask me to play old school thinking that they would like something from 75-82 ish... I'd put something on and around 20 minutes later... they're like wtf! I thought you were gonna put on some old school you know like something from the 90's  oh brother!!!
