What Is The Rarest Bargain You've Found?

I have seen posts with the most you've spent on a record, how about the rarest bargain you've scored. I will start:

A friend of mine gave me a copy if I would record it to CD!

Abba "Lay All Your Love On Me" (Disconet) - FREE

I bought many LPs for less than 1 Argentine peso (US$ 0.30) each, but can't remember which ones (most of them were local editions). However, I got a sealed US copy of Roberta Kelly's "Troublemaker" for 2 pesos. Not my favorite album but... 8)

Outside the disco realm, I remember exchanging "mano a mano" (that is with no money involved) a Los Guarros CD (bad local rock band) for... Peter Hammill's "The noise" CD, then his last. :o That girl at the fair surely didn't have a clue! :P

Back in the mid 80's, after looking for sometime in New York, I went to one of those 'open market' fairs in New Jersey where people are selling anything and everything. I found a sealed copy of Lamont Dozier's Out Here On My Own album. The reason I was so happy: "Take Off Your Makeup" resides on this lp :) . The reason I was even more happy: The guy wanted a whopping $2.00. :D :D

    cheap salsoul

I paid 5$ for Salsoul Orch. Nice 'n nasty US test pressing 12", which I got from Gemm with other records. Even with the mailing it was 9 $ total, which I concider quite a reasonable price.

I found a mint condition copy of Cissy Houston's very first solo single from 1966 called 'Bring Him Back' on the Congress label. This one usually goes for about $50 and I snagged it for 50 cents at my local thrift shop! :D :D :D :D :D

I also won a copy, in an auction of Gloria Gaynor's 1965, very first single called 'He'll Be Sorry' on the Jocida label for only $3.01! These are just a few of my finds!

Not Disco 12", but great bargains! I found in Amsterdam in 1993 a copy of Ronald Mesquitas Brazilian LP recorded for the French Barclay label in 1972, mint condition for $3.50. This was the biggest Brazilian record on the jazz dance scene then, selling for $500 (still sells for between $300-350). I found a year later for $2.00 a mint copy of Ben & Platano's "Paris Soul" album, also on Barclay (they did do some good stuff back in the 70's). This was at the time an unknown record, but a year later was selling for $700 (due to the demand for it by jazz, soul/funk dj's). I sold it for $750 to a DJ in Switzerland at this time.
I also managed to find in the last few years three copies of the really rare Brazilian record by Arthur Verocai (recently reissued by Ubiquity in San Francisco) for $15.00 each. This record (if you can find anyone who has an original to sell) is selling for $600-700 at the moment, only seen on e-bay once in vg+ condition, sold for $450.

For 3 or 4 years in the mid-'80s, there used to be an un-marked hi-nrg specialist in the basement of a womens' clothes shop in London's Chinatown. The ladies' fashion aspect made sure the shop was a closely guarded secret among my peer group - though when I met up with Leatherman, I found out that he used to shop there also - and that he'd bought some of the records I'd seen and left - and many I'd missed!

The best thing was that all the hi-nrg was in the racks and fully priced, while all the straightahead disco 12"s were piled up in boxes under the racks; and were all £1.00 each. They used to buy some good collections, mosly US product and mainly promos. It was a bit of a 'disco dream', while it lasted.

During one particularly dry period when the stock hadn't rotated, I went through all the boxed and floored stuff and couldn't find a single new title. I was keen to buy something, so I trawled the hi-nrg racks looking for any 'mistakes' - and found none. I was about to leave and I decided to check (very reluctantly) the last 3 racks, just behind the counter - and the very last record in the very last rack was 'Good Love' by Rome Jefferies. I panicked because I thought they knew of its value, but the late Andy Sojka, who worked there occasionally, said '..a pound'. I didn't sleep for days!

I don't watch eBay, but I haven't heard of this turning up on there yet. It has been one of the most sought-after (and genuinely scarce) 12"s in the UK since at least 1984 and I'm sure it would start a mini war on the 'net. :)

Rome Jefferies "Good Love"....a truly rare and very sought after 12 inch. Last copy I know of went for £200. Also for some unknown reason (I personally don't think it's that great but many others obviously do) Hipnotic "Are you lonely" recently went for £200 as well. Has anyone got a copy of the Trilark LP from early 1980's?, this too went for £200 although the 12 inch single is relatively easy to obtain.

'Good Love' is indeed an acquired taste because it doesn't have a melody and is actually quite mundane. However, it grew on me over the years (I had it on a cassette) and in the end, it's the percussion that really got me. I've found it absolutely irresistable ever since.

Hypnotic was always big over here, too. The last copy I saw in a shop (around 8 months ago) sold for £200 in very average nick.

The Trilark LP is a fairly standard Ray Reid/Ray Rock/William Anderson production (like Intensive Heat, Zinga Washington, Puff, Rocket, etc.) and wanders somewhere between Slave, D-Train and Unlimited Touch territories. It's just rather average and a bit contrived. It's always been a surprisingly difficult LP to find, more so than any other CBS-distributed LP from the early '80s (apart from the Karin Jones, which is also on Handshake).

I understand the Neddy Smith 12 on Delirium goes for about $300 on eBay. Anyone heard that? Now THAT'S a boring record!

    Karin Jones??

Can someone tell me more. How much does this go for? It seems that anything on the Handshake label goes for big £££

A soul LP with a couple of uninspired club tracks. The leader 12" was mixed by the great Tee Scott who'd obviously done his best to save this nondescript boogie attack. 'Ready, Ready Love' is the mid-tempo cut that sells this album. Apart from the Trilark, I'm unaware of any other Handshake LP that commands more than £15.

    Re: Bargains...

Hmmmm nice bargains I scored this year are:
    - The Whipers / And the beat goes on (orig. US Solar pressing) Eur. 0,50
    - Klassique / Somebody's loving you (sealed SAM copy): Eur. 8,00 (which I think is cheap for a sealed copy)
    - Joyce Sims / Come into my life (test pressing): Eur. 2,50

To me it seems not a bad trio for a total of 11 Euros...

What Is The Rarest Bargain You´ve Found

Hi All! I´m new to this forum, and i live in Portugal :D

I also have found some great bargains:
    In Vynil :

Love & Kisses-Accidental Lover/I Found Love (Now That I´ve Found You) 1,75 Euros

Brian Bennet-Voyage (i call this Progreesive Disco) 1,75 Euros

Cerrone- Love In C Minor & Paradise each 5 Euros

    In Cd:

    George Clinto-Computer Games 5 Euros

Also a friend of mine walked into a used vynil shop, and the owner had about 500 records to put in the garbage , the reason was that the store was lacking in space. My friend asked if he could have those 500 records. The owner said fine, and there went my friend to his home with about 500 records to his place. There was lots of good stuff from various types of music, but there was really a lot of Disco,Funk ,Soul and Electro/Synth stuff...records by Freeze,Bunny Siegler,Patrick Cowley and lots of Disco/Funk stuff i´ve never heard of...and there was a 12" by someone called Danny Corbitt...what a great Disco Tune :D
Talking about being in the right place at the right time...

Just a few weeks ago I was at the Meadowlands Flea Market in Rutherford, New Jersey(Yes, where the New Yor Giants play!) and and saw one of the vendors sitting on a box of old records. I looked in the box and asked the guy how much for the whole box? (There were about 45 records inside) He said $10. I rushed into my pocket gave him the money and grabbed the box and went home. You know what was in the box?
