Who is your all time favourite funk group

My vote would have to go to Parliament who were truly the masters of funk through the seventies.

    Flashlight

Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)

    P-Funk(Wants To Get FunkedUp)

    Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication

These cats knew how to throw it down!

I would have to say the truth is.... from the state of OHIO

    The OHIO PLAYERS 8)

I think because of the rawness of their music put a place in my heart.. They could be as funky as the rest of the early to late seventies bands.

They definitely don't get enough credit from the mainstream, but that's OK by me. When I need the funk I throw on:

    Ecstasy
    Streakin' Cheek To Cheek
    Skin Tight
    Who'd She Coo?
    O-H-I-O
    Far East Mississippi
    Body Vibes
    Climax
    Funky Worm

    etc. etc. etc.

When I need a good ballad I throw on:

    Together
    Heaven Must Be Like This
    Honey
    Let's Love
    Sweet Sticky Thing
    I Want To Be Free
    Varee Is Love
    Angel

Have to agree The Ohio Players rank right up there with the best of the funk masters.Interesting comment from a bio by John Bush quote "In an era when Philly soul continued the slick sounds of establishment-approved R&B, Parliament scared off more white listeners than it courted." I would agree that this might well apply to the white establishment being more receptive to The Ohio Players who indeed had a more slick and polished funk sound as compared to the raw funk of Parliament.

The Ohio Players band was a very successful crossover Funk band in the 70's popular all over the AM dial, ballads and all, actually at the time they were so popular that their excellent Funk music was over-played and over exposed, it was even constantly played in moving carnivals merry-go-rounds rides. I much rather preferred they had stayed the more exclusive R&B band they were when they first appeared, but of course that’s not a very good marketing formula if you want to sell Albums.

Oh yes , My favorite funk band are the early years of Kool and the Gang.

    Favourite funk Band

:) My favourite funk band has got to be Pleasure.

    Great tunes like:
    "Joyous"
    "Bouncy Lady"
    "Glide"
    "No matter what"
"Ghettos of my mind" etc, are truly memorable.

You could say they were the thinking persons EWF.

Ohio Players, Kool & Gang, Pleasure, and EWF would all make my list.

I would also had Sly & Family Stone. They had sound and style. 8)

I've got to give it up to Cameo! Not only did they have the best gritty Funk tunes (KEEP IT HOT, POST MORTEM, RIGOR MORTIS, etc.), but they also had some great ballads that weren't too cheesy like GIVE LOVE A CHANCE and SPARKLE.

As much as I like P-Funk their funk is a little too avant-garde for me. They had some great grooves but they werent really a singles band.

good choice on Cameo... I have to agree with you on some of the P-Funk comments. I feel they were more of a listening band... but hey, they could put out the ultimate jam every once in a while.

From an AMG bio by Jon Bush.
" He(George Clinton) and many former Parliament/Funkadelicmembers continued to tour and record during the '80s as the P-Funk All Stars, but the decade's disdain of everything to do with the '70s resulted in the neglect of critical and commercial opinion for the world's biggest funk band, especially one which in part had spawned the sound of disco. During the early '90s, the rise of funk-inspired rap (courtesy of Digital Underground, Dr. Dre, and Warren G.) and funk rock (Primus and Red Hot Chili Peppers) re-established the status of Clinton& co., one of the most important forces in the recent history of black music.

It was a shame this band couldn't stick together... splitting up in 3 ways... with Arrington going out as a solo.. Steve Washington forming Aurra.

After their take off projects, they should have gotten a clue that it was time to settle their differences & survive to try and make a super LP as long as they could stand each other. :(

&RICK JAMES & THE STONE CITY BAND:

    "GIVE IT TO ME BABY"
    "SUPER FREAK"
"YOU & I" just for starters.

When it comes to F-U-N-K, Funk, the best group ever is THE J.B.'s, no doubt about it. Under the direction of the Godfather of Funk himself, James Brown, these guys produced the best grooves I heard in my entire lifetime. And yes, I know, there's a lot of J.B.'s formations, a lot of musicians recorded with the band. Here are some names:

St. Clair Pinckney, Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker, Johnny Griggs, Clyde Stubblefield, Fred Thomas, Fred Wesley, Clayton "Chicken" Gunnells, Darryl "Hasaan" Jamison, Robert Coleman, Russell Crimes, Jimmy Nolen, Hearlon "Cheese" Martin, Charles Sherrell, Jerone "Jasaan Sanford" Melson, Isiah "Ike" Oakley, Hearlon "Cheese" Martin, John "Jabo" Starks, Bootsy Collins, Phelps Collins and...

    James Brown, of course!

If you want a proof of what I'm saying, just listen to the double CD FUNKY GOOD TIME: THE ANTHOLOGY for a start.

    Peace,

zeca azevedo, layin' down the funky beat

    Hey fellas,

This question is hard to reply!!! It's like you are asking 'Wich son you like more?' :o

When I read every reply at this topic I thought:

Oh yeah....I agree with Hustlebaby, Nano, Zeca, Visuals, Marky, Steely Dan, ......etc......etc....

I use to change my fave band from season to season but, I have a couple of them that are always next to me. Maybe they are my 'real fave ones'! They are:

    E.W & F
    Kool & The Gang
    The JB's
    The Bar-Kays
    Con Funk Shun
    Brass Construction
    Parliament
all the other bands mentioned by the members of this forum!!

See??? I can pick just one group!!

    Peace,
