My vote would have to go to Parliament who were truly the masters of funk through the seventies.

Kool & the Gang/Brass Construction :D :D
my fav's being
Funky Stuff & Movin'
Got myself together & movin' on
Woooooooooooooooooooooo![]()
Keep the Faith
I would have to say the truth is.... from the state of OHIO
The OHIO PLAYERS 8)
I think because of the rawness of their music put a place in my heart.. They could be as funky as the rest of the early to late seventies bands.
They definitely don't get enough credit from the mainstream, but that's OK by me. When I need the funk I throw on:
Ecstasy
Streakin' Cheek To Cheek
Skin Tight
Who'd She Coo?
O-H-I-O
Far East Mississippi
Body Vibes
Climax
Funky Worm
etc. etc. etc.
When I need a good ballad I throw on:
Together
Heaven Must Be Like This
Honey
Let's Love
Sweet Sticky Thing
I Want To Be Free
Varee Is Love
Angel
Have to agree The Ohio Players rank right up there with the best of the funk masters.Interesting comment from a bio by John Bush quote "In an era when Philly soul continued the slick sounds of establishment-approved R&B, Parliament scared off more white listeners than it courted." I would agree that this might well apply to the white establishment being more receptive to The Ohio Players who indeed had a more slick and polished funk sound as compared to the raw funk of Parliament.

The Ohio Players band was a very successful crossover Funk band in the 70's popular all over the AM dial, ballads and all, actually at the time they were so popular that their excellent Funk music was over-played and over exposed, it was even constantly played in moving carnivals merry-go-rounds rides. I much rather preferred they had stayed the more exclusive R&B band they were when they first appeared, but of course thats not a very good marketing formula if you want to sell Albums.Originally Written by efunk_adelic
Oh yes , My favorite funk band are the early years of Kool and the Gang.
Kool & The Gang - "The second baddest motherfuckers out there" according to Mr. James Brown.
:) My favourite funk band has got to be Pleasure.
Great tunes like:
"Joyous"
"Bouncy Lady"
"Glide"
"No matter what"
"Ghettos of my mind" etc, are truly memorable.
You could say they were the thinking persons EWF.
Ohio Players, Kool & Gang, Pleasure, and EWF would all make my list.
I would also had Sly & Family Stone. They had sound and style. 8)
Cameo rules
EWF and The Ohio players are following
I\'m a Victim ( of th very Song I sing )
I've got to give it up to Cameo! Not only did they have the best gritty Funk tunes (KEEP IT HOT, POST MORTEM, RIGOR MORTIS, etc.), but they also had some great ballads that weren't too cheesy like GIVE LOVE A CHANCE and SPARKLE.
As much as I like P-Funk their funk is a little too avant-garde for me. They had some great grooves but they werent really a singles band.

good choice on Cameo... I have to agree with you on some of the P-Funk comments. I feel they were more of a listening band... but hey, they could put out the ultimate jam every once in a while.
No funk thread without "Maze Feat. Frankie Beverly" I'd give anything to see some new stuff them but until then we have:
You
Back In Stride Again
Laid Back Girl
Before I Let Go
....feel free to add more
The funky sides of SHOTGUN, SLAVE & SUN certainly
deserve a mention.
Love this S-triumvirat.

" He(George Clinton) and many former Parliament/Funkadelicmembers continued to tour and record during the '80s as the P-Funk All Stars, but the decade's disdain of everything to do with the '70s resulted in the neglect of critical and commercial opinion for the world's biggest funk band, especially one which in part had spawned the sound of disco. During the early '90s, the rise of funk-inspired rap (courtesy of Digital Underground, Dr. Dre, and Warren G.) and funk rock (Primus and Red Hot Chili Peppers) re-established the status of Clinton& co., one of the most important forces in the recent history of black music.
