Big Bucks Disco / Any Good???

There is a record that I've seen going for Big Bucks and I want to know if it's any good. It's called Tighten It Up By Spunk. I've been in to all things DISCO for years and I've never heard of this. I'd like to know more before I comit. Can you help me out? Style? Producer? Was it played at the time? Is it any good??? Can it be compared? All answers would be appreciated. Ta Very Much.

Just on principle that you're probably a Simpsons fan, here's the lowdown - it's a semi-rapped funk cut from 1981 which also came out credited to BLT. If you like things like 'Dance On The Groove...' by Love International & 'Freakman' by Empire, you'll probably get to this.

Mix consultant credited for the Spunk LP is one Frankie Knuckles.

And it definitely isn't disco. How big are the bucks we're talking?

    Spunk!

    Great.
Always liked Freakman. Never understood "Projecting Penny" ???!
    How about $350 on E-bay a few weeks ago. Deal/ Not a deal/ Crazy????
    Can you give a tempo.

PS Do you know Amanda Hugginkiss???

I always assumed 'projecting' Penny simply meant 'featuring'. 'Tighten It Up' is marginally slower than 'Freakman' and a touch jazzy.

Amanda Hugginkiss? "Listen here, you s**m s**king p**s bucket -" etc...

By the way, always had trouble getting more than £10 for that Spunk/BLT 12" in London. That's the wonder of eBay.

Somebody's obviously heard it and liked it! I was only asking.
I was surprised to see such a hefty price tag on a record I know nothing about.
Just wanted to know if it deserved it....not neccessarily to own it.
What's the most stupidly over-priced thing you've seen on E-Bay??? I've seen lots of things I've bought for 'tuppence' selling for crazy money and just wondered if I'd missed out.

    Yeah good point!
But when I see records that are supposedly in my style I want to check 'em out. Always surprised about how many great records are out there still that I ain't heard of. I just find it a bit scary that I 've been loving all these songs and there is still so many out there. Have you got Spunk?
I'm just intrigued,'specially with the "Frankie rap mix style'?

i too come across songs that i never heard of until recently that i absolutely love. i come across at least 10 songs a year that i never heard before. personally i never heard of the group spunk. but if you know there work and have enjoyed their past music then definetly look into any other music that they have put out. but dont spend any money until you hear it. i wouldnt want you to spend all that money for record that isnt that great. see if the seller can send you an mp3 clip of the song just so you get an idea.

So you didn't go for my favourite Mo retort. Never mind.

Be careful who you ask that question, especially this 'board's Leatherman. Seriously though, short of playing it to you, I can only describe it as a decent 'urban groove' kind of track, the lyric's all about 'every night on the city street..' , '...ain't got no wheels, can't make no deals, ain't got no job, 'cos times are hard...', etc.

It's not earth-shattering - and even if you did like it a lot, you'd be crazy to pay $350 for it.

    Are you crazy?

BLT/Spunk were Jesse Boyce, Jimmy Levine and Rich Tufo, incidentally.

Are we talking about the same Jesse Boyce that was with Moses Dillard?

Ivana (love it!) --- WELCOME TO THE BOARD! You've already started a lively discussion and your presence is more than welcome. Not being a Simpsons' fan I am lost but whatever floats your boat. :D

Forrrce: Should I assume this is not the same Spunk credited for the music on the US version of QAF? I really hate their theme for this show.

    Am I Crazy?

Not gonna spend $350 on Spunk. All this negative chat is starting to leave a bad taste......

However. I have just spent $250 on a promo copy of Walk the Night for my boyfriend's Christmas gift. He's wanted it for a long time and now he's gonna get it.
Have I been a mentalist or a very nice girlfriend???

Don't know for sure, but I reckon it probably is.

    I don't know either the US or UK theme(s), so I can't comment. If it's/they're a little '80s and P-Funky (which I seriously doubt 8) ) then I'd say yes.

I've got the SPUNK album from when it was released back in 81/82 or so. I never thought of it as a rare item, but I already noticed in recent years it was very in demand until I saw that it constantly sells on Ebay for up to $ 50. But $ 350 is absolute madness!

I must admit that seems very high, given that --
    - Casablanca promos aren't all that rare; they pressed quite a lot of them
    - The 12" version of the song is on the Casablanca Story box set, and is very nicely mastered (an increasingly rare phenomenon these days :( )
    - If one must have the song on vinyl, the Canadian version of the "Strange Spirits" LP has the 12" version instead of the short one found on the US LP.

But if it was worth it to you, then it's worth it, period.

Another inexplicably high priced disco item is The Ethel Merman Disco Album, which I've seen go for over $100 USD. I would hope that it would go for much less now that it has been reissued on CD. IMO if you paid anything for that train wreck of an album, you paid too much.

I always liked the BLT 12" version of "Tighten it Up" more than the LP mix. Isn't the 12" Jonathan Fearing? He opened the song up a bit and improved the sonics. The lead vocal always slightly reminded me a little of Gil Scot Heron (when he is singing). It quite throaty in a laid back way. "Tighten.." has a nice funky girly chorus and a pretty funky bassline, about 108bpm. It was quite a culty track both when it came out, then again in the rare groove era, but interest seems to have waned over the last 10 years. I have the LP but I don't remember it have much else on there, just a workman like funk/soul set. There is another LP on Gold Coast by Today, Tomorrow, Forever and a couple of 12"'s by Double Exposure and Majik.

I'm very suprised to see the LP going for $350. Are you sure?
    Leather is the way forward!
