"I Feel Love" by Donna Summer.

If it must be instrumental, then it would be "Chase" by Giorgio Moroder. If that's too slow, then "Frank Herbert" by Klaus Schulze, although that has real drums.

No. The first important work of Cowley was his remixing of Sylvester's "You make me feel". That was 1978.

I agree with "I feel love", however maybe the question was about the 90s trance trend.

indeed Donna Summer Patrick Cowley and Giorgio Moroder were the orgins of trance music. However what was the very first trance record to sound as it does today and to be titled in that genre. I would assume it must of been in the 80's like most new genres. Perhaps Italo-disco could be defined as trance? but i meant more of a lasgo sounding style.

"I Feel Love" and "Frank Herbert" have most of the trademarks of contemporary trance: repetitive 16th-note sequences (actually 8th-note in "I Feel Love", but tape delay gives the effect of 16), high resonance on the filters as they open and close, "spacey" sounds, etc. "I Feel Love" goes as far as to have synthesized drum sounds (proper analog drum machines like the 808 were still a way off in 1976).

The only difference between these two tracks and formulated DJ fodder out today is the ubiquitous half synthetic, half sampled 909 drum sounds. The 909 didn't come out until 1984 -- but more importantly, it did not become cool and widely used until about 1991, so the first track to fit the most rigid definition would not have existed until then.

Klaus Schulze is sometimes referred to as the "godfather of trance", although very little of his music was made with the dancefloor in mind. Having said that, two of his 80s albums have titles that are word plays on "trance" namely, "Trancefer" from 1981, and "En=Trance" from 1987 (also his last memorable album IMHO).

When did that CAN track come out, you know what I'm talking about, was it called I Want More? And what about Kraftwerk: Trans-Europe Express sequing into Europe Endless, pretty trippy if not downright trancey.

Trance is not my thing at all, but hasn't the late 80's acid house genre got the most in common with trance? If you think of This is acid by Maurice e.g. :o

    Current Trance Movement

I've often heard it said (a year or two ago when Trance was the big thing) that the Trance explosion began in '96 w/ Robert Miles' "Children." That was the beginning of the end for Eurodance and "Barbie Girl" put the nail in that coffin, but Trance emerged as the hot style, and especially so when vocals were added i.e. Olive's "You're Not Alone." But you are all right, I heard music labelled as "Trance" long before "Children."
