How old is old? The only one that was a pop hit that comes to mind is the Acapella version of Na Na Na Hey Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye by The Nylons 1987.

Different eyes see different things. Different hearts beat on different strings. But there are times for you and me when all such things agree...Rush
There was that Suzanne Vega song: "do-dododo-do-dododo-do-dodododododoo"... Don't know the name, there was a full album of remixes of that song where different DJs built backing tracks to her voice.
There's another in Tracy Chapman's first album. Check it out.
And of course there's the most famous of all: Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz", from her posthumous 1970 Pearl. A pearl indeed.
That's "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega with later remixes by DNA on A & M Records.Originally Written by Nano

there an acapella version of the trammps disco inferno that i would love to have if anyone knows where to find it.
The Temptations Emperors of Soul box set has an accapella of "My Girl" on disc 2 that's not listed in the credits.
Didn't the majority of 12" singles released in the 80's/90's feature accapella versions by the artists? I'm not going to go looking --- I just remember seeing it a lot.
Oh yes, the acapellas where almost on every US import 12inch from the 1985 on or so. Some were just vocals some where just missing the beat of the original version. Teenage me used to like those 8) Just one more thing why US imports where more interesting, the European pressings didn't always contain the accapella.
I recently saw an accapella on the recent Salsoul re-release of Loleatta's Love sensation 12". That's a new addition is it not?
"Without A Song" by Carpenters (very short and it's not disco obviously).
Biggest acapella hit I remember (apart from Toms Diner) was the Housemartins version of ”Caravan Of Love” (the isley/jasper/isley classic). This must have been around 1986-87.
About acappella hits, Don't worry be happy is the one that was hard to hide from :x
Well yes, certainly you can't get more a capella than Bobby McFerrin :)
The guy even got to record with Chick Corea, John McLaughlin and a great bunch of jazz giants. Incredible! :o
On a nicer note, The Housemartin's "Caravan of love" was great indeed. And to think that Fatboy Slim was one of the singers on that one...
You're right Nano,
McFerrin Is Mr. Acapella!! :D
Sadly, "don't worry be happy" is about the worst track he ever made if you ask me. So obviously he had to strike gold with that one   while good albums like "Spontanious Inventions" are probably gathering dust in the stores as we speak!
Remember when Downbeat and other magazines regarded Bobby as the last jazz genius? (They said the same about Stanley Jordan.) Now he's thought more of as a bizarre turn of pop jazz, like Kenny G.
I think Bobby worked better when simulating just one instrument between a jazz group environment (I remember the "Round Midnight" soundtrack, for example). Now, when he tried to do all solo, with those "bip, boom, boo-bam be-bop", I admit, it just made me laugh too hard. At that time a good friend of mine had bought several Bobby records -a cause of constant mocking for my part- and whenever he made me a tape of something, he made sure to add some "Bobby live" hidden track at the end. It always made me LOL.
