Depends on which bootleg CD you get this info from. One of my copies states DJ John Daru.

Unless you've actually heard these CDs and still insist on buying them be warned that they are pretty bad both in mixing and sound quality. Don't bother.

I bought one of these for $5 and think it was a ripoff. 2-minute excerpts of each track and sounded like it came off a 4th generation cassette. No thanks.

Graham: Just one question. How could that much music be a rip off for only 5 bucks (Canadian or U.S.)? What do you want, blood?

Given that they are bootlegs, and no money is being paid to the copyright holders, paying any amount for these is a rip.

I have four of these CD's at home. Granted, the sound quality on many of the records blow and on one of the discs, the song sequence doesn't go by what it says on the back cover, but there are very few CD's out there which have actual mixing like this. True, the 1 1/2 minute songs (it seems) are annoying, but for some reason I don't mind it. Then again, where can you find songs like "Love Insurance" and "I've Gotta Keep Dancing" on other CD's??

Graham: Aah well, you didn't mention that before. Hey, wasn't it you who always says that proper releases where money does go to copyright owners are a rip off too? Just asking.

Now you guys got my curiousity spinning....

Was this released on a particular label?

There's also some mixed (pardon the pun) feelings about the mixing skills of this DJ, so I'd like to be the judge for myself even though he mixed each song after 2 minutes or so.

Nope, that wasn't me. I'm one of the few people that doesn't think CDs are overpriced. IMHO, the real problem is that people undervalue music.

I agree with you 100% on that Graham, when CD's first came out and up until 1998 before Napster came around... people were buying CD's at $17.99. Now that they can get songs for free... why buy them? and even paying $8.00 used... they still bitch...

Efunk trust me the mixing is close to perfection!!
I admit the sound isn't the best 6.75/10 (these guy's make out it's distorted, I got what I paid for!!!
When it comes mixing I'm telling ya this guy is on the money )

Can someone else confirm the dj is it John Daru?
That was the point of this thread

I'm honored that you asked, but no I don't. Besides I haven't mixed since the 1980s and I wasn't that great anyhow

if bernie was a dj,he'd be up there with the likes of david mancuso.a wealth of wisdom on what tracks to play and the other would be when to program tracks.

The word evokes not just a type of music or a kind of dance or even a style of dress.It\'s also a new social order of black and white, gay and straight, rich and poor, all hot, sweaty and, most likely, high, together.

Some of the mixes on the Disco Box cd's were played on WKTU (NY) during their special classic disco weekends back in the mid-90's. I agree that the sound quality could be better, but the mixing is excellent and the 1-2 song length on a number of them doesn't bother me all that much.

this is true Robbie. Jellybean on KTU used to play some of this stuff. In fact I remember when Jellybean played the 3 last songs from Disco Box Vol. 4 which of course are all donna summer's songs in the same order and the same mix! Not the same quality. I remember that after Macarther's park he played Theo Vaness's Sentimentially It's You which is not included on that cd. I agree that on most cd's with the exception of Disco Box Vol. 12 & 10 & 6 the mixing is bad. I know because I am a dj myself. Quality wise only Disco Box Vol. 12 seems to have the best quality from all of them. It seems that by the last cd they finally worked out the mixing techniques and sound quality. I should also point out that the same company put out a Hip Hop Compilation of like the best of hip hop from '80-'82. The cd was definitely worth purchasing for $4.88. Some songs have bad quality and some songs have decent quality on that cd. Nevertheless does any one know any good disco cd's that are mixed? I heard a good one with First Choice, Sarah Dash, Nayobe, Vogue, Love & Kisses, Soul Sonic Force and i guess more stuff. Does any body know which cd this is?

Mixtape--You're absolutely right about the Jellybean mix of Donna Summer's "MacArthur Park" into Theo Vaness' "Sentimentally It's You". I remember that 25-minute mix very well. It began with Peter Jacques Band's "Fire Night Dance", and he mixed Donna ha-ha-ing during FND's break into McAP, and then at the end came SIY. That was an awesome mix. I wish Jellybean would put a lot of those mixes on CD. They were really good. I remember once he did a mix that began with Love and Kisses' "How Much I Love You", mixed into Ultimate's "Touch Me Baby/Dancing In The Night", and mixed into Viola Wills' "Up On The Roof".

    Re: The Disco Box Collection

you know what really bugs me about those collections that are hawked on late night tv is when they say "they're not available in stores". Well if someone buys them and then sells them to a used music store THEN they ARE available in stores. And even though much of the music on those collections interests me, I KNOW they'll have edited versions of the songs most often, so I'm not really interested. Also, with the sets I've been seeing recently (like the one singer Jerry Butler is talking about) they give you a brief trial period to "audition" the recordings which to me is practically screaming "burn them and then send them back."

    Re: The Disco Box Collection

I know bumping a really old thread like this is a huge no-no but I came across it and this set really has my interest. This past weekend I got my hands on what I thought was this set but it wasn't :( I'd really like to hear it, as an old radio station here in Chicago that used to have the "Jammin' Oldies" format had some really great mixes as part of their 5pm "Beat Block". I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it comes from this set. Is there anywhere still selling this? ========= I totally agree when these mixes are in the right hands they're amazing and if the sound quality is fair then I can live with that it doesn't have to be perfect. So if anyone can point me in the direction of where I can find this please do let me know :) Again sorry for bumping an old thread like this, it's just something like this might be very difficult to find eventually and I would like to get it.

I mixed the 1st collection for a friend over 20 years ago on cassette. The guy from Dance classic showcase ripped it off, and from what I know he pretty much ripped off all the DJ's after me.
