what is the best movie that portrayes disco? In my opinion although it may sound cheesy to some it Saturday Night Fever.

SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER does a great job showing the best and the worst side of the DISCO era. A great movie, it does for the 70's what REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE does for the 50's - it shows young guys and girls coming of age and having to deal with adult life and with this cold, cruel world. The best movie about DISCO ever made, no doubt about it.

Of the movies I've seen, Summer Lovers is my pick. It can't musically match SNF but it embodies more of the feeling and attitude of the disco era.

For me it's a tie between Saturday Night Fever and Thank God It's Friday. I loved SNF because I'm from the north east coast and can relate to many of the issues and atmosphere of that time period. Every time I see it, it brings back lots of memories of the 70's, my favorite decade.
TGIF was a lot of fun and most critics have said that it perfectly captures the disco scence of the west coast back in the 70's. I thought it was funny and I was a huge fan of Donna Summer during the release of the movie, so it made the movie that much more fun. I feel that both movies had some of the best dances of all the disco movies I've seen.

Saturday Night Fever!
This movie was an accurate portrayal of the scene at the time. For me it hit home. When the movie was burning up the screen during the Christmas season of 1977, I was 18 and from a working class neighborhood of Philadelphia. The guys in the movie were pretty much like the crowd that I hung out with during the late 70's.
During that time, critics seemed to rip it up with negative reviews. They didn't seem to think there was much value to this movie. Since then, it has become a cult classic. The soundtrack is still selling all over the world!
The movie shows the main character going through a transition. He sees that he does not want to stay at a dead-end job and lifestyle in his neighborhood in Brooklyn. Tony's friends are blind to this.
The clothes, dances, music, hairstyles etc. were accurate. I still watch this movie on DVD every few months. It might not be "Citizen Kane", or "The Godfather", but it has earned its right to sit at the top of American pop culture!! 8)

i dont even think there is any doubt what movie represents disco and the disco scene like "saturday night fever". from yvonne elliman to the trammps, come on man!! this is it, no other film comes close. when this movie was made they werent making a "disco" movie , they were just making a movie about life in brooklyn that happened take place in the late 70's which what makes it so real and true. if you think about it the disco part of the movie plays second fiddle to the tony manero storyline.the "godfather" it is not but then again no other film is. ill debate you on that if you want another time. till then,

The big problem I had with SNF was the general negative tone the movie took from the midway of it to the end. The suicide, the general poor relationships between the sexes not to mention the various ethnic groups, etc. I'm not trying to be pollyannaish about the period. There was some of that and Anita Bryant with the "Moral Majority" to boot in reality. However because those scenes held significant portions of the movie, I felt it painted the period too negatively. If it was really like that, I probably would not have gone to the discos as often as I did nor would i have felt so good about the period.
On the whole though it was a good movie with the music being my favorite part of it.

As distasteful as some of the attitudes and scenes portrayed in SNF may be those portrayals are RIGHT ON!
That was the reality. Why do you think we had the feminist and civil rights movements?
The sexism! Bad!!!!!!! I was always a gentleman regarding the women that I was honored to share some small part of my life with. But I had some pals who were fucking Neanderthals when it came to their relationships with women.
Race and ethnicity were not issues with the group I hung with. Our neighborhoods were far less ethnically and racially segregated and people from different backgrounds were welcomed by everyone. The races can get along!
So "Saturday Night Fever" is my choice (again). If you want to see life for working class, urban American youth in 1977 that movie is perfection!
And 2001 Odyssey! Is a perfect representation of the neighborhood disco clubs that were common. Few people could afford regular weekend trips to Boston Boston or get into Studio 54 so clubs like 2001 Odyssey were packed.

Saturday Night Fever is my favorite disco movie. Thank God Its Friday was a bit wishy washy and commercial compared to the raw depictions shown in SNF. Looking For Mr.Goodbar wasn't a "disco" movie however the few scenes of Diane in the singles bar were real. Back to SNF, I hated Travolta's friends (except the kid) but in reality, mens' attitudes towards women hasn't changed, if anything I think it got worse. Besides I was told that back seat romance or wham-bams was common place however we will always have gentlemen :D and neantherdals :evil: !
Some blacks and latinos had a problem with the racism in SNF but I have to give them credit for being REAL! In that part of Brooklyn (Bay Ridge) is or was VERY RACIST! If one of us was to walk through that hood god forbid at night we may get attacked - it happened more than once. No the entire community of Bay Ridge may not be prejudice yet the movie did showed how some of them expressed their dislike about Blacks and Puerto Ricans.
Finally I liked Annette more than Stefanie...okay she turned out to be a pig because she was looking for love in all the wrong places :( and hanging out with a bunch of losers. Overall she was prettier and a better dancer.

Yeah the "Backseat Boogie" was very common. It was generally the only way you could get any privacy. We didn't do it out of preference but out of necessity.
I liked Annette myself. A fertile Myrtle as we used to say. The kind of girl who got knocked up the first time you put the boots to her.
Stephanie was as fucked up and as much of a bullshitter as Tony. She was just a LITTLE more succesful than he in improving her situation, but she had to **** an older guy to do it. So who was really lower?
Double J was the ******* of the group, Joey was a decent guy at heart, not as bright as Tony or Double J and Booby C was a pathetic little pussy. He was only allowed to hang with the other 4 (Gus) because he was the only one who owned a car!
Like I said; this is movie is so real to me!
