    Another year, another playlist

Don't wanna bore anyone, but I've been listening to some old tapes of mine and came across this one, which has a lot of good funky disco toons.

    This time it's August 1986.

I Love to Love - Tina Charles (the remix, revived an old, old toon well.)
What Does it Take - Kenny G (funky remake of the Motown classic)
Slow Down - Loose Ends (at last a UK band sounds totally American)
Human - Human League (liked the groove and the frailty of this)
Rumours - Timex Social club (ATT one of the the big buzz records?)
    Dreamer - B B & Q Band (sophisticated and subtle)
Shiver - George Benson (pure class)
Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But The Rent - Gwen McRae
Superbowl Shuffle - Chicago Bears Shufflin' Crew (the UK was in the midst of American Football fever by now)
Breaking Away - Jakki Graham (not as good as Set Me Free)
I Can Prove It - Phil Fearon (pretty lame record)
Silver Shadow - Atlantic Starr (quality)
You Look Marvellous - Billy Crystal (great video)
Jump Back - Wally Jump & The Criminal Element (brilliant record)
Everyone's A Winner - Zuice (loved this cut)
Showing Out - Mel & Kim (what a massive floor filler)
Jack Your Body - Steve 'Silk ' Hurley (took over 8 months to make #1 in the national UK chart. A House institution)
Love Can't Turn Around - Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk (what a sound, it was massive)
Burning Spear - Richard Evans (I think I must have played this thinking it was vaguely linked to the emerging House scene....Oh well! Still, any excuse to drag out one of my all time faves from '79)
Set Fire To Me - Willie Colon (what an intro to mix in...wow, this was just up my street)
Soweto - Jeffrey Osborne (this should have been massive. A great record to mix in and out of 'cos of the dynamics)
When I Think Of You - Janet Jackson (not as good as Nasty)
Word Up - Cameo (still love this record after hundreds of spins)
Holiday Rap - DJ Sven & MC Miker G (one to shut the Madonna fans up)
Burnin' Hot - Michael Jonzun (too good)
Robot Girl - Was Not Was (unhip to like this as a DJ, but I loved it)
You're My Occupation - Chaz Jankel feat. Brenda Jones

Hope some of you find this of interest. Shows exactly why I loved DJing right up to my retirement. I really used to look forward to getting into the groove and playing these sounds.

The summer of 86 was my last one too, before going to become the "serious" person I am now....
The music was really changing but some of these were outstanding!
    I particularly remember:

    The good old funky sound......
Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But The Rent - Gwen McRae

    The new exploding house.....
Jack Your Body - Steve 'Silk ' Hurley
Love Can't Turn Around - Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk

    And the great music.....
Set Fire To Me - Willie Colon
    Soweto - Jeffrey Osborne

"Ain't Nothing Goin' On But The Rent" was by Gwen Guthrie. Unless Gwen McCrae did a cover version at the same time... :-?

Robbie: Yeah I got it wrong. When I typed it I was thinking.....that ain't right. Another senior moment.

Giovanni: Looks like we're on the same wavelength to some extent. I actually gave up in '87. Probably the dumbest decision I ever made.

NRG: I played lots of down tempo stuff, only not as a special segment at the end of the night. If Human was morning music, then so were at least 3 or 4 records either side of it. They were all good dancers and all worth a spin at the height of the evening.

Nano: Don't know if you know the track, but it surprised the hell out of me. It had a really contemporary sound for 1986 comlete with rapping no less. By '86 everyone was taking the piss out of Kenny G's playing (the saccarine sweet sax sound), but this kicked some ass!! Heavy beats, slap bass, dirty lowdown groove that was a real hip grinder.

BTW: The original was always one of my favourite Motown records, so it was great to have this remake to throw at the 'kids'.
