Great Stuff. "Dropped a Bomb on Me" Gotta get up in the Morning..............

These guys were from Tulsa Oklahoma?? Anybody know where the GAP came from? I heard it was the first letter from each street name the 3 guys lived on. Any truth to that?

This septet was led by three brothers, Charles, Ronnie and Robert Wilson. They took their name from the initials of three streets, Greenwood, Archer and Pine, in their home-town of Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA.

I thought so. I remember hearing something like that years ago. Great band! They were one of my all time favorites.

The best part is, back in the mid-seventies they worked as Hank Williams backing band.

The Gap Band "II" album is all great, with the guys doin' songs at different styles, from Parliament to Earth, Wind & Fire. And the "Shake" single? Yummy!

Baby Baba Boogie was in my opinion their only true disco track. Its an all-time fave of mine.

I couldn't agree with you more. That was the first song I introduced in my KTU Studio 54 Clubhouse Mix. I loved that song!

You guys are not alone. Boodi and I discussed loving this song some time ago. I still have the 12".

Speaking of the Gap Band, last year I sent a money order to a rap DJ for a 1974 Soul Train episode featuring Ecstasy Passion & Pain, B.T. Express and Ohio Players. I actually got more than I bargained for, he also added some early 1980's Gap Band musi videos plus a 1980 Soul Train episode taped when originally aired because it has the ads in it and this episode features Gap Band and Denice Williams. Gap Band performed "Burn Rubber" and "Yearning For Your Love". Great episode.

I think the Gap Band had the only single that I know of whereby it was renamed for UK release. I think the US version was "I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance (Oops") whereas the UK version was named "Oops Upside Your Head".

Whatever it was called, this track had a massive impact on UK dance floors - whenever it was played, we used to sit down in columns and ROW (you know, boats and stuff).
Along with The Fatback Band and "Backstrokin". It really used to give me backache!! I wouldn't be surprised if, when it is it played now, they are still rowing to it ..

Sorry Jazz. I usually agree with your tastes but that Oops track by Gap Band is one of my all-time hated tracks (sorry to be negative everyone). I can think of better ways to get back ache!

Steely - no offence taken. Nice to know what other people think ...

The backstrokin' thing - it was all down to youthful exuberance. I mean, we (meaning the JAZZ PILGRIMS, as our Soul Tribe was known as) even used to put our stereo on the bonnet of the car, and row in the CAR PARK!! We used to get some strange looks.

My friends always said I took the music too seriously. But even I would join in the fun occasionally...

And as for my favourite Gap Band track - that wouldn't neccesarily be "Oops" (though I do like it). I liked "Outstanding" the most, followed by "Baby Baba Boogie".

Now you're talking Jazz. 'Outstanding' is a classy track & 'Baby Baba' is an all-time favourite of mine!
The name Jazz Pilgrims sounds familiar; did James Hamilton in his column in Record Mirror ever mention your gang? James was my God between '77 & '89. His disco knowledge was incredible.( though there are a few on this board who fall into that category !)

I certainly remember buying record Mirror and reading his column avidly.. Absolutely essential reading !!! H was good, wasn't he?

Don't think he ever mentioned us. We were the "Jazz Pilgrims" from Tunbridge Wells, and we did meet another lot of "Jazz Pilgrims" from Bedford. Maybe he mentioned them!!

But we did used to get around a lot ... So maybe he DID !!
