    Tony Thompson Diagnosed With Cancer

Just found out, at the Chic Tribute site, that Tony Thompson, former Chic drummer is battling Renal Cell Carcinoma. :( He will be starting treatment soon.

Mr. Thompson is such a talented drummer that he was used as a session drummer on albums for artist like LaBelle, Sister Sledge, Debbie Harry, David Bowie, Madonna, Mick Jagger, Robert Palmer, Duran Duran, Rod Stewart, Jodi Watley and was the lead drummer of the Power Station ("Some Like It Hot").

His reputation as a gifted drummer lead to him taking the spot of John Bonham (died Sept 24th 1980) of Led Zeppelin in a brief reunion of the legendary rock group during Live Aid back in 85'.

This lead to a "secret" recording session that proved to be promising. However, it all came to a halt when Mr. Thompson was involved in a series car accident.

All the best wishes in the world go out to Mr. Thompson and family for a full and speedy recovery.

If you wish to read more and/or find out about a tribute/benefit concert for Mr. Thompson just go to the news section of chictribute.com.

    Sad news.

The other day I checked some Chic fact: they were, at the time, the biggest selling act in Atlantic's label history. However, when Atlantic made that giant show for their 40th anniversary in 1988, THEY WEREN'T EVEN INVITED!
I found a Spanish magazine with large coverage of the event and certainly Chic's name is not mentioned even once. There were plenty of r&b and soul artists (Wilson Pickett, Spinners, Coasters, etc.) but not one disco act. Shame on the Ertegun family!

Nano: I also remember being shocked when Chic was excluded from that. We, of course, can only guess at the reasons but my best guess would be it was because of the style of music they played...

What about the Trammps. Did they get mentioned? If it wasn't for cash cow disco acts like Chic, Atlantic wouldn't have made it through the late 70s.
